Despite poor management and wasted contracts, the nba’s criteria for success is based on wins and playoff birth. You can’t really judge every team based on championships, else Lakers/celtics/san antonio is the only “good team”. Despite the East teams having poorer matchup and only having to have sub 0.500 to make it to the playoff, while the West having to have 0.600 or so to make it, its just how the nba works
And dont’ get me wrong, of the 30 teams in the nba, I always thought Philly is somewhere between 15-20.

I mean you already see the ref head turn like he didn’t see a foul everytime dwight howard goes over players backs everytime to get offensive rebounds. They use to call it all the freaking time when he 1st came into the league, but once he got popular the ref’s stop calling it against him. Kobe hit’s players on the elbow all the freaking time, but they hardly EVER call it against him.

I think NBA refs are messing up games because they are stupid and very bad at their jobs, not because they are crooked.
Because if they are crooked and doing this stuff on purpose, that implies that they know better and if they are now clean then they will do a better job and won’t need to be better trained or replaced. I don’t agree, I think they do need to be better trained or replaced. The NBA can’t fix it’s terrible officiating by making sure their refs are clean. They need to fix the terrible officiating by making sure their refs are not idiots and not all 70+ years old.
Donaghy cannot be used as an excuse for the shitty officiating in the league. There is a real problem they need to fix. And the problem is that they suck, not that they’re crooked.
Do I think the NBA refs all have gambling and mob ties that make them call games one way or another? Naw.
Do I think the NBA refs let factors that shouldn’t have an effect on the game affect the game? Most definitely.
Personal relationships, arena audience scrutiny, league television ratings, prideful assertion of authority, etc. all shouldn’t really be a part of refereeing, but it’s an unfortunate fact that they are.
I don’t believe they all have mob ties. I believe personal shit gets to them and they call the game different depending how the wind blows/if it’s a star team or player. They was calling it down the middle fair or unfair to star players. The league is at fault imo. If they had the head of ref’s have meetings with the officials in the playoff’s showing them bad calls against the star player before the game to try and give the ref’s working the game better ways to get kobe or d wADE TO THE FT LINE then that is cheating imo!:annoy:

Dude it’s both imo. I think the ref’s call the game different for some teams than other teams. You always here this: “He’s too young to get that call in the nba, but in time he will earn the respect of the ref’s to get those calls!” or “How could they call that foul at the end of the game”? The ref’s are suppose to let them play at the end of the game. “aka you can foul while playing defense during the last 10 seconds of the game unless you are defending a star player” Or my favorite when paul P./kobe/lebron/dwade screams if someone blocks or steals the ball from them so they can force the ref’s to call a bullshit foul even though the block/steal was clean.:annoy::rolleyes:
I can go on and on, but the ref’s ain’t dumb. I know you would like to think they are just dumb old men running around the court that never seen the rule book to basketball before, but those guys are smart. If the don’t follow the program David S has made up for star team/players treatment the ref’s would be fired imo. Why go against the nba and call the games fair when the assist button has been pushed? That’s some easy money to make being a ref in the nba.

Do all referees let subjectivity influence their calls in one way or the other? Yes, no one can be perfectly objective.
Do some referees let their subjectivity go too far? Fuck yes.
Yeah, that last part is the big issue. The speed at which the game is played is blurringly fast, especially with insanely fast guys who initiate contact like D-Wade and old AI playing. A lot of it ends up being a judgement call. If a star like D-Wade streaks into the paint, then makes contact with a lumbering big man like Marc Gasol, who’s going to get the benefit of the doubt? Is it right that 9 times out of 10, it’ll go to D-Wade? Probably not, but given the speed of the game, you can probably see why it happens. Do you assume the star with the reputation for being among the best in the league screwed up?
I agree. I am pretty sure the whole reason the mentality of “call goes to the older player or more well-known player” is so that there is some self-consistency in what the referees are calling. Otherwise, it would always be a snap judgment call with no predictability and basically a coin flip to who gets the call. It is hard to tell if the referees naturally do this or it is a conscious decision but I am pretty sure that is part of the explanation. But some refs go too far with this, e.g., Dick Bavetta, and don’t limit this to only 50/50 decisions but almost all decisions.
That’s some easy money to make being a ref in the nba.
