It has and always will be my favorite fighting game series, as well as favorite Capcom series. As I still play it almost daily.
Now would be a perfect time to release a new DS/VS game. People are aware of the characters (mainly Morrigan and Felicia, still works though) and the ones curious to the series are always hooked once they begin playing it. At least with all the people I have spoken with. The popularity of the series/characters is hard to deny, as they are always making some sort of cameo in other games.
If Ono was to create a DS the same style as SF4, that would be amazing. Though I am rather partial to having a full 2.5DHD game.

Agreed, the character desgin of other fighters, doujin and GG, that attempt to have any kind of nightmare creatures or legends PALE in comparison to those in DS. While tons of fighting games keep creating characters that look like cosplay/anime characters, DS characters rule the roost. Morrigan’s appearances trump even Ryu, I believe.
SIDE THOUGHT: let South Korea develop DS. Have you seen their take on Rockman Online??? HOT, albeit 3D. The character designs are still sexy and true to the series.

On the question about ports and versions:
Chronicle, whether DC or PSP, is pretty much the same thing as HSF2: mode selection based on previous games in the series, but various inaccuracies around compared to the original arcade releases. PS2 Collection is the most accurate home port, pretty much arcade perfect as far as I know. Saturn ports were quite good for their time, but the PS2 Collection sort of renders them obsolete now. PSX ports weren’t very good, like most PSX ports of Capcom’s 2D fighters.
Savior seems to get more play than Hunter, but Hunter still has a competitive scene, at least in Japan. You’ll see that lots of events there will have both a Savior tournament and a Hunter tournament. Original Vampire, Savior 2 and Hunter 2 seem to have little to no competitive scene whatsoever, although every now and then you’ll see novelty side tournaments for them; for example, there’s a Darkstalkers event coming up in December at Club Sega Shinjuku which will have tournaments for Savior, Hunter, original Vampire, and Savior 2.
Will that event get a stream? I would love to tune in and watch it, when is it?
It’s going to be on Satrurday, December 18. Don’t know if there will be a stream or anything, but I’ll look into it and post anything I find.
This is what brought me into 2D fighters. I want this game.
