my 360 rr’d a while back, i should be getting it back soon.
GGs to everyone I played tonight, if they are here and lurking in the shadows!
Anywho, I like Freed, and I’m having problems figuring out what exactly to use in fights VS Marco (mostly just SHADOWREDzero’s Marco, thumbs up if you’re here!)
Seems like most of my combos will miss due to his small ducking stature + a hard to hit body that makes most Welcome Tempest/Magnum Jetters from crouching A’s and B’s miss. Is it all just a mixup game of poking B -> Phantom/Wiff’d A Magnum to Throw Mixups?
I keep wishing Freed had an aggressive normal like Cedric’s back B, or some high-priority moves to do on-wakeup. He really seems to have some of the worse, low-priority supers in the game… not to mention they seem somewhat easy to Gachi…
So, any Freed tips out there? Or links to combos? (I wasn’t able to find any on that Japanese wiki posted a while back…)
I suggest going to my website (on my sig) and watch some of the freed match and vids
freed’s a lot of work. he does a lot of damage on a big opening, but he’s probably still ranked bottom 3 imo
the 5B 5C chain has the special property of standing your opponent up on hit. this lets you combo into 46C (into super)
freed has a good throw which lets him keep momentum and charge. mix this up with the 5B 5C chain
both 46K moves lose to mashing, even if you cancel into them off of a 5C or whatever. unless you’re in heat up, the reward is meh and the risk of doing the low version is huge. you have to discourage your opponent from mashing by using parries aggressively; 5B 5C -> parry, 2A 2A -> parry, etc
when you have your opponent trained to not attack in those situations, you can press your offense
also, freed gets some pretty monstrous damage off a low bounce parry:
(no meter) dash jump B C chain -> 5B 5C -> 5C -> 2C -> 46C
(3 meters) heat up -> super jump B C chain 5C -> 5C -> 46A -> 46A -> 2C -> 236236P -> 46C -> 236236K
after a blocked 46P, you’re in a weird situation. if your opponent retaliates with anything but a throw, you can throw him first. vice-versa also applies, so what generally happens is a simple tech throw after a blocked 46P, which isn’t bad
however, freed’s still at disadvantage here. if the opponent is good and knows you’re going to mash throw, he can do something like backdash or jump up and punish the throw whiff. freed doesn’t have the same option
BUT, if you read that you can risk not mashing on throw and do stuff to counter their counter, like 46C on reaction to a backdash or 28A if they jump up
freed ideally wants to hit 46B while in heat up, but most decent players know that’s freed’s biggest threat/gimmick, so it can be pretty tough to land
the combo is:
heat up 46B -> 2C -> 28C -> 46C -> 46C (whiff)
does a lot of damage off of an overhead, sets up a meaty shadow to hit right as they’re getting up so you can get one more mix up
unfortunately, freed’s low alternative isn’t very threatening. 46B (hold) doesn’t give you any combo opportunities in heat up; you just get a knockdown and another mix up. 46B (hold) in heat up is less unsafe; most characters can’t punish it at all iirc
so theoretically, freed can get a bunch of “free” 46B (hold) low attacks on opponents that are willing to eat them instead of risking getting hit by a 46B overhead
You know, oddly enough, that link has never worked for me! I… really don’t understand why not. I’ll have to try it again on another computer, and hey, it’s cool to know there’s something there for him! Thanks!
Ooo, 5B 5C forces stands, eh? That’s pretty cool!
:tup: Thanks much for the awesome writeup! That answers a lot of my questions, and even ones I didn’t know I had until now! I have to agree with your placement of him in Bottom 3; I easily respect any who have won tourneys with him…
Thanks to you both for giving me a lot to try out and work with next time I play! :wow:
No prob
A good mixup with Freed’s Heat Up 46B is to just use 2B as a low, as that combos to his 46A loop which is fair damage, and you can catch mashers with it since it is fast. Unfortunately, if you are fighting someone short enough to duck your 46A, these will only work if they are standing when they get hit.
You can also use it as part of a jump in oki mixup, like doing…
Throw, Heat 46C, Jump, |> 2B 46A, 46A, 2B 46A, 46C or
Throw, Heat 46C, Jump, j.C |> 2C 28C 46C
Or do it after they’ve block any of your other shadows as well. Be careful of Parry > DP though. :I
You can also mix a crossup into it like…
Throw, Heat 46C, Early Jump Over, |> 46A, 46A … etc
Throw, Heat 46C, Later Jump, j.C |> 5B 5C 46A … etc
So using these as well can help keep your offense fresh.
Cool thanks ^-^
Got the game yesterday.
Decided to pick up Marco.
Marco’s Low Gachi rive combo does ridiculous damage
that cross up stuff sounds pretty good, never thought of that
i’ve tried using heat up 2B as the low portion of the mix up, but people just block low until they see freed go into 46K and then just block high. if i do 46K (hold) they eat it, but the damage is whatever
hmm maybe that sets up a 46C -> late shadow cross up midscreen though…
I got this game a few days ago.
Damnit I’m 5% away from 100% with Deathbringer. Edit: 100%. Now to XBox Live!
Awesome game.
nice, I thought freed was really good when i started playing this game at 1st, but after playing a friends yesterday. And him spamming crouching jabs and shutting down my moves, among other things i realized he’s not as good as i thought.
Seems like cedric, face, and O&D are really good.
Anyone knows who’s top?
Yeah that’s kind of the problem with 2B vs 46K, it’s hard to keep it fresh just by itself. Working throws into the mixup is really good for catching people but of course gets you zippo for damage for the meter you use. The jump-in mixups are pretty decent since they gives you another legit high/low mixup to work with.
The crossup stuff can be pretty good but it can be hard for you to capitalize on because you need to know which direction to hold as soon as you jump, so it takes some work. You can also mix high/throws into the crossup too if you want, like doing
Throw, Heat 46C, Jump Early, then 46B or dash forward and throw
Basically the more variety of weird shit you do the more you can keep them on their toes. You can also use his j.B as a crossup of course, so maybe there’s a way to work that into the thing as well.
Cedric, Ashley, Coyori…
I’m baaacccckkkkkk!!! Finally got my 360 back from RROD fix, so we’ll see how long this one will last…
Hopefully it will last awhile, lol xD
If you want to see some match videos and other things go to my website (in my sig).
