One thing u guys are overlooking is that many times the innovators of stuff are not the ones that make the best use of it. FlyingVe and Chrisis are the 2 players I look to the most for new tech (THANKS GUYS!). But neither of them has ever won a major that I kno of. This just shows that being an innovator isn’t necessary to win and that often it’s who can take the tech and implement it the best. I mean I dk about u but I’m not the best at reading cram data or figuring out what links into what and while I could figure some of it out on my own if I say for instance never saw someone do the Vergil sword loop I would NEVER have thought of it. So I think it’s natural to a certain extent for people to watch those innovators and just copy what they do because often times they may have the execution to pull the tech off but not the creativity or knowledge of game mechanics to come up with it by themselves. And who is there the most tech for? The top tiers except for probably firebrand, x23 and someone like modok.

Ok well I understand the mags issue so throw that idea out lol. As for akuma tatsu assist. All I have to say is FUCK THAT ASSIST! And what I mean by that is it’s so good for a variety of purposes that even after all this time I still cringe when my opponent has akuma in the back during stage select hahaha. Don’t worry about combo extension just do the setsuzian buster cancel and call akuma and there u go another relaunch will be waiting for u. Enjoy

What is happening here is a lot of you are thinking like beginner or intermediate players. There is no problem with this, but please understand that what you say is not correct, when you get some more experience and understanding of why teams are created, you will come to realise ‘the truth’. I admit it is true that a vast majority of ‘average’ players may simply be copying because they are not smart enough to know better, but smart players do not pick ‘quirky’ teams because they actually DO know better.

Let me go into more detail with individual points:

Certain lower tier characters (LTC) can of course go up against certain higher tier character (HTC). It’s called ‘the matchup’. But what is different between a LTC and a HTC is that a HTC will have a vast majority of match ups in their favour because they have a wider, more powerful set of tools to use that work across the vast majority of the cast. Ease of use does NOT dictate how good a character is perceived (again, perhaps this is true of intermediate players) Viper has to be played with high execution, because when done so she has a ridiculous array of options. Not a lot of people can do this, but just because it is difficult does not mean it is not possible to see what the character themselves are capable of.

Oddly enough, you have the right answer but for the wrong reasons (and perhaps highlight my point perfectly). It is definitely about getting into the game more and wanting to do better and understanding the characters more. Your reason for dropping iron man should not have been 'I watched EVO top 8 and the pros didn’t use him, he must be hard to use therefore I am limiting myself". You reason for dropping iron man should be because you understand your character perfectly. You have crappy supers, awkward hit confirms, gimped movement etc. These sorts of reasons would be why the pros aren’t using them btw… but YOUR reasons must never be just 'because the pros don’t do it"… you should come to your own sensible rationalisations.

Then you are getting annoyed at dumb people. Smart people know that strider can call his own safe mixups and teleports etc and if played to perfection can wreck teams. Its not being done at the moment because people value anchor strider more. Nobody intelligent is talking about how its worthless though.

Hmm sounds oddly familiar… oh wait Wong and his Iron First. Here is an example of one of the best players in the world running into the limitations of their character. I’m sorry, but you really must understand that most pros are looking at the benefits and negatives of the characters they are using and ultimately deciding that the three the pick give them a high chance of winning. They might love phoenix wright, but they have sat down and said “you know what, having ZERO air mobility, poor normals etc is going to get be killed in a tournament when fighting magneto.”.

You mean the extremely limited play style of IF got figured out? Damn straight it did. In a game of tridashing teleports, command grabs etc… IF with his current toolset will not be competitive no matter how much time people put into him. You would have to set up such specific teams to even make him sorta viable, which all falls apart the moment you get hit and a character killed. Meanwhile, top teams can deal with anything thrown at them, and take the loss of a character or two without a problem.

One thing you get from all this? Not all characters are created equal.

At the end day People want to win more than to be innovators. People use Drone/Doom/Dante because they are basically the best assist in the game.

Jwong might have impressed fans with Iron Fist, but he is not winning with Iron Fist anymore.

I mentioned Justin Wong because he’s said numerous times that he loves IF. You’re missing my statement that sponsored players play for money. I’m super competitive in anything I do and want to learn all of the right tech and mechanics, but these guys get paid to play and win more money (sometimes) while reppin gear and equipment.

You’re right about them not all being created equal but Japan alone shows us every month or so that with a different eye, every character us viable. I just don’t get why here in the US we can’t figure out what they do and just be committed to winning with characters we like.

I thought I was the only Tron/Thor player until I saw Abegen.

Well that’s okay. I’m not just for a handout here, I’m working on finding alternates myself. I just was curious if anyone else had the same idea on what characters play similarly so that I can look into them more. I once again thank you for your input.

Thankies for the kind words! I would like to win a major at some point though. >.>;

I didn’t say I stopped playing IronMan BECAUSE he wasn’t on EVO. I said that the fact of not seeing him on EVO got me thinking outside the box (the box being my first team :P) and made me question my decision of playing IronMan. After that, I started doing some research, which led me to conclude that IronMan is not as effective as I would like. Which led me to making the final decision of moving things around and start experimenting with some other characters to find a more effective team as a result. I didn’t take him out because of imitation, but because of information. Get me? D:

On that same subject of non-innovative teams, there is something else at play and it is something I experienced as an SF4 player, which is the game I’ve managed to play best, so I’m gonna explain it in SF4 terms, because this game I don’t know so well:
You start playing different characters, trying to find one that suits your needs. I chose Dhalsim. I played him quite a bit online, and after fighting every character in the roster many times, you start to notice that every Ryu plays alike, every Cammy plays alike, every ChunLi plays alike, thus once you understand your opponent’s way of playing, and devise a counter strategy against a certain character, you’re, ultimately, creating a counter strategy against every player who uses that character. Sure, every player has his/her own game; but when you play against Blanka (for example), you’ll either play a decent Blanka, or an AMAZING Blanka or just a plain crappy Blanka, but they will all be based on the same basic tactics against which you already know how to defend. For instance, I know Gen will typically base his offensive game in his crossup; Zangief will always try to stay close to you and grab the hell out of you; etc… Thus, if I use Gen or Zangief, I know the main strategies around which you’d have to play, in order to defend yourself decently. Once you reach this point of knowledge on the game, I’d say you’re able to start thinking outside of the box and try for new, innovative, imaginative, creative playing. Because you already know your way around the game, you know your way around most characters and know which methods of playing are more effective for winning.

I don’t know if I explained myself xD Hope I did

No problem! If I remember back when umvc3 came out u got extremely close when u were running viper/someone/strider (I forget ur middle but it’s the tourney where u said played most bs mvc3 character, the most bs umvc3 one and the most bs assist lol). And I saw u at evo. U have nothing to be ashamed of. U can go toe to toe with some of the best players in the world which is something 99% of us only dream of being able to do myself included. And like I said u and Ve are by far the players I look to most for innovations both of u being mad scientists of this game lol so that’s nothing to sneeze at. I kno you’ve always said u have issues with execution and all I gotta say is god help all the other pros the day your execution gets to the same level as your understanding of the game itself. I mean come on you play viper and while her basic stuff mite not be that hard to get her to that s+ tier u have to do finger gymnastics which unless your marlinpie is not exactly the easiest thing in the world to do with 100% accuracy lol. I’ll tell u though, I def hope u pull off a major this year cuz anyone who contributes as much to the understanding of the game as you have definitely deserves to take home a title so GOOD LUCK!

Hello Im new to UMvC3. But a lot of my friends are playing it. For a while i found the game way too random for me. But i have finally decided to give it a shot. Im still very new to the mechanics of the game and what characters have good synergy and compliment each other. If it helps i main Kabal in MK. Yun in SSF4 and Jin/Xiaoyu on SFXT. From what ive seen characters i like are C.Viper, Phoenix, Morrigan, X23, and Strider. Can anything good happen out of this?? any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanced!

Abegen can win games, he can beat ‘top teams’ from time to time… but his team is NOT viable in the long run competitively. He knows this too, but he plays it regardless. Same reason with Kusuro.

Is there some place where I can see special properties of moves/supers?

Like for example if Spiderman has a projectile invulnerable super, or if nemesis has armor an assist, or what are the properties of Nova’s human cannonball super/Ghostrider’s bike?

Is there something like that? Maybe compiled?

The SRK wiki is the best free resource that I know of.

I wasn’t necessarily talking about the top level players character choices, but rather people who just seem to wait and see which teams are either winning tournaments or who the top tiers are and choose them. It’s worth noting that Justin Wong came 3rd in Curleh Mustache 4 with his Iron Fist team. I was also agree with the OP in that we disagree with people only sticking to the usually DMC, Zero, Drones, Hidden Missiles selection, because they don’t think other characters are worthwhile. Even Combofiend realized that his Vanilla team could still be relevant, but he just had to put effort in with it

It seems that people just wait to see who the most effective and simplest characters are, then pick them. It’s like if they have to even think about how to use a character, then they aren’t viable. Why put in work with Dr Strange when you can just activate Spiral Swords with Vergil?

And even worse, when someone does do something unique and original we find an excuse to invalidate them. 'Kusoru won FFXV, but he wouldn’t now because we’re now familiar with Rocket Raccoon", or “Frutsy only got top 8 in Evo because people weren’t familiar with M.O.D.O.K, but it won’t happen now that we know the match-up”. It’s like these players individual skill levels didn’t count towards anything.

The top players may have there own personal reasons for picking players. But I honestly think the rest of us pick characters just because the top players do, or because they’re top-tiers and simpler to use than the rest of the cast (except Zero, but then again he’s the best character in the game lol).

If you go to the shoryuken home page, there’s a link to the umvc3 guide. It has everything you need.

I checked out the wiki. It’s not very useful for what I want to know.

Well I guess the only way to find out the info that I want is to go to individual forums and dig through all the mess to find the relevant infos. That or just test things myself…

It would be very useful is someone compiled a list of stuff like that. List of hypers (supers with unique properties) or list of assists and their properties just for a quick at a glance reference.

Thx anyway guyzs

So I need help making a not-so-standard marvel team. I’ve been playing since release but never been able to just pick a team, perpetual character crisis or whatever. This will mostly be for playing against friends who aren’t that good and online play; however, it would be nice if the team was somewhat tournament viable. Here are the characters I thoroughly enjoy and I’m willing to learn Dante/Doom/Strider/Racoon/Sent if their assists would be considered tremendously useful:

Arthur (though I doubt he will ever be tournament viable)
X-23
Trish
Modok
Zero (my execution is pretty shit though)
Vergil
Thor
Deadpool
Frank West
Skrull
Dormammu
Taskmaster
Chris

I know that’s a lot of characters but I’m finally at the point of wanting to learn more than basic BnBs. My execution is decent but I prefer characters without tight links in combos. Enjoy characters/teams that transition from keepaway/zoning to rushdown well.

  • preface - I am trash at Marvel

I’m torn on the issue of playing characters you like that suck vs characters that you don’t care for but are great.

I play Iron Man because I like him but I know that I could play a similar character who does what he does better, i.e. Magneto. (Doom is already on my team as I use the MorriDoom Shell) Iron Man is not bad so long as he is just an assit lol. But once my Morrigan Dies it becomes extremely difficult to win a match even with Doom backing him up.

I have been experimenting with other 2nd characters for the Morri/Doom shell. I have had decent success putting Strider in 2nd position. I know that it’s generally a weak spot for him, but he is better than Iron Man regardless and I like him. It’s kind of the best of both worlds. Also messed around with Morr/Dorm/Doom so I can still Zone after Morri dies.

I would suggest using Morrigan/Doom/Strider. Strider complements Doom really well as the Vajra can keep your opponent grounded and Doom can capitalize off it’s hard knockdown. You can also do Morrigan’s bullet hell with Vajra… kinda lol (youtube Jeo Kubodsgarden to see). And besides the team can be interchangeable for you us you’re having success with Strider outside of the anchor position

From your list I’d suggest Deadpool (katanarama assist) Trish (assist-Y) and X-23 (Anke Slice assist). You wanted a team that’s not so standard but also tournament viable so I selected out of the no-so-popular i.e. not Top-Tier, characters (X-23, Trish, MODOK, Thor, Frank West, Chris). And the team have standard bnb’s which do decent damage, but as you improve you’ll be able to do a lot more with them too

Deadpool/Trish are excellent at the zoning/keepaway game, and X-23 can be hard to touch. But the characters can also rush an opponent down hard (I would suggest checking out footage of Rei-chan from KVO on youtube to see how you can play an offensive Deadpool on point). As for the assists I selected, I guess Trish’s projectile assist can be used in mix-ups with Deadpool’s teleports or X-23’s Mirage feints. And you’ll still have an OTG in x-23 if Deadpool dies first. You could even set up unblockables with the Ankle Slice-Deadpool’s overhead/Trish’s box dash-S.

Also, X-23 is amazing as an anchor. Especially her dirtnap.

hey I play UMVC3 solely on the fact that i like my characters but i feel that the team overall isn’t good even though the characters are… i play Vergil( Judgement Cut) Captain America( Charging Star) Nova (Nova Strike) any tips on how to improve this team??
