I kind of wish all sports would abolish All-Star Games and just stick with Skills Competitions.

i love the all star game. even if its a glorified no defense scrimmage.

when i was a kid growing up, i was a huge penny fan… but living in the bay area, its not like i got to see a ton of his games. all star game was one of the few times i knew i’d see him, so i’d set up and made sure i copped it, no matter what the case. and then seeing him teamed up with the best players… as a kid, that was one of my favorite times of the year. nowadays its more or less tradition, but its allstar games like this year that make me happy to be a fan of the sport.

people who try to discredit it because there’s no defense… feels like its missing the point. its a good break for the leagues best players to get out there and throw oops and bomb from distance and have fun with their job for entertainment. offense in other all-star games is far from an exhibition as much as its going through the motions… basketball has the advantage where there can still be a ridiculous display of talent even when people aren’t playing their hardest… there’s a reason why there isn’t a harlem globetrotters for baseball or football.

“lack of defense” is the equivalent when someone watches a combo video and feels the need to post “i bet this dude won’t do this in a real match”.

I blame Tyronn Lue. If Dwane Casey was allowed to coach the East the team would have played defense. Why did Lowry play the most minutes for the East while Lebron only played 20 minutes when he’s the one who usually gets the most minutes at the ASG. Not like they were showcasing the hometown players since Demar didn’t get that much time. Cavs are scared seeing as how Raptors are only 3 games back so they try to run Lowry into the ground and rest James.

I certainly don’t blame them for not wanting to go hard, but if this is how it’s going to be then don’t bother risking them at all and just not have the game. Just stick to voting for All-Pros as the honor and just have All-Star Saturday as the main event. People can participate of their own volition.

We like the high scoring, but not if it’s one sided. Might as well have them take turns shooting or dunking rather than an actual game. I’m not saying it should be play-off level of intensity, not even a normal regular season game. But at least some form of defense would be nice.

It would be great if there were some actual motivation to win the game. Somebody mentioned the winning team would get like 1 million to the donation of their choosing, or something. What about home court advantage for the finals, rather than win/loss?

I’d actually like to see a competitive all star game. I mean the whole notion started at least as a what if we had the biggest stars playing against each other. If they aren’t playing in their best form, then might as well get Lavine, Deandre and Gordon next ASG. I don’t wanna see dumb 3 pointers with no opposition. There is a reason shoot arounds are not broadcast before games - they are boring af. So to see only two plays all game long (ISO and a bad defended pick and roll) defeats the purpose of having stars together.

I don’t mind the charity thing, but I don’t think it would make much of a difference.

Keep in mind, everyone expect these games to be loose through the three quarters, and if it’s close then take it up a little bit. The game simply wasnt close near the end.

But the game doesn’t matter, and it shouldn’t. Nothing on Saturday night mattered either. Saturday night could have been a bust. But the best thing you can do is put the product out there and hope something great happens.

Isaiah could have run away unchallenged in the skills, Devin Booker could have stolen the 3pt if curry and klay shoot horribly, and Levine could have gotten away with a sub par dunk package because he was going without a real rival. In the end, you just put the talent up there and hope they produce something memorable.

Nothing is guaranteed to create greatness. Mlb’s all-star game “matters”, but that didn’t stop it from sucking and drawing record lows year after year (http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/13262493/2015-mlb-all-star-game-draws-record-low-television-rating). But not having anything at all is a good way not to have amazing moments, and that would be really un-NBA.
