NVGA SuperCon - May 22-25 - ABQ - New Mexico

Uhh. For what game?

I’ve been to alot of tournaments, and this wasn’t anywhere NEAR the worse lool.

In addition - worst? They gave trophies out lol. Any tournament with trophies and that many setups = easily good. Still, curious for what game(s).

Marvel

Yes, IMO this was not a good tourney for Marvel. I’m glad things turned out alright for you and I’m sure that other games ran well. We feel like this was a big slap in the face to us, though.

We had one very simple request: move Marvel to Saturday night. Really, I’m sure it could’ve happened in that giant room that looked way too big for the amount of people actually present. We had the setup going, we had the people present, and I’m pretty sure no one really cared that much about it not being on the projector. Why this couldn’t happen is beyond me. When something like that is not accommodated when it is VERY obvious that it can be, it’s pretty frustrating.

Basically, we cut our losses ($100 in entry fees for some casual play), and took off.

You can’t honestly expect a 20 man Marvel tourney in NM, in 2003 or today. It just won’t happen. Go look at recent Seattle tourney results. Even they don’t always get 20 people and that is a Marvel hotspot.

I dunno if DFG has something against Marvel. Just look at this thread, people want Marvel. 3s was on the main schedule, but only had 6 entrants. I guarantee Marvel would’ve had more people than that. Newer games indeed got their chance to shine, but games like VF5 did as poorly as 3s.

This con was just weird. The venue fee was too much and drove people away. There are people who only wanted to attend one day. I don’t blame for them for turning away. $30 for one day? No thanks. Some of us expected this and posted our thoughts, but nothing was really done about since DFG went away from the $10 a day fee, which people didn’t seem to complain about in the past.

I believe this was my 4th X-Topia tourney I’ve been to in ABQ and this was the first disappointing one. Listen to us, we can help. I know people posted good stuff on the NM NVGA board, but it fell on deaf ears.

I’m glad ABQ peeps are so chill. They made the trip very worthwhile and they are part of why we will continue going to ABQ in the future.

I know I’m not alone, some people on Smash Boards have some of the same complaints.

First of all, poor, poor turnout for all 2D games. 3rd Strike got a 6 man round robin, and I can only imagine that Marvel2 and CvAss2 did’nt even happen. Guilty Gear probably got the most activity the entire con 2D side, but I’m also pretty sure it was all of Colorado playing themselves minus 2 people from Dallas.

And I was told by ICE that Soul Calibur 3 only had like a good 13 or so people in the tournament (good job winning it BTW, I hope I’ll be able to get some matches with your X in SC4!). Hell, even the Smash players had some major complaints.

And no, this was’nt the worst tournament I’ve been too, cause all I did was just pay 20 dollars to play casuals with friends I can play with in Las Cruces, and I also got in a few games with Big D and Halfro in MvC2. Hell, I did’nt even get to play Soul Calibur 3 casuals because the only two people playing the game were pretty much just mashing. Again, it was just a poor turnout and there was sooooo much space that was’nt even used, therefore making pretty much the entire venue obsolete and making the venue fee unwarranted. Hopefully it turns out better next time.
