It’s gonna get worse when we pour the gems into the mix.
There’s a big difference between spending $5 for each DLC character to play as in MVC3…and spending $329 for a PS3, $59.99 for SFxT, maybe $80 for dual-modding your stick or paying about $150 for a PS3 arcade stick…just to play as 5 extra characters.
I sense them becoming dlc for xbox like SC4 did with vader and the green man. I would much rather ban them all. Fuck those kitties and their servbot hitbox.
That’s never going to happen, at least not with Cole and the cats seeing as they’re owned by Sony.
Yeah…some people don’t realize that the 2 kitties are Sony mascots.
This is all just wrong.
No member of the fighting game should have to fork out over £150 + A New Game, and possibly a new fightstick just to keep up to date with a single game. Most of the games played at EVO have no console exclusives, and most own cross platform sticks, This pretty much eliminated PS3 vs Xbox as they play the same, Minus a small amount of confusion with the buttons. Console exclusive characters are pretty much always banned, It’s just too unfair for those who are genuinely too poor to afford a PS3, Dare I say it, the majority of the FGC will still be in education, I’m in College, All my money is spend on things I need, not on a PS3 just so I can keep up to date with Exclusives.
Anyway, They will become DLC down the road, maybe then they will be allowed, But until then, It just wont happen. Also, sorry if it seemed this was aimed at you, it was just that your post was the most relevant.
TL;DR - Unfair on the community, We’re not known for being like that.
Honestly other than Cole, the other 4 do look like joke characters. So in essence Capcom only didn’t care 1 character worth…
Agreed. This is the biggest issue and sadly is what will hold back any cool console exclusive type stuff. Again makes me wonder if this would apply to the pro players who’s opinions matter the most in terms of “I lost to so and so”
*$250 for a ps3. $59.99 for SFxT IF you buy it new. Used can be cheaper esp if you trade in for it, so it could be free. Correct on the arcade sticks. But thats 5 extra characters competitively. If you’re already entering tournaments, it means your blowing money on tournaments as well unless you’re actually winning them. It can range from $20-$50 or more per tournament.
Yeah I get that and you are right. But to play devil’s advocate again, why can’t you play on a PS3 that belongs to a friend/colleague/roomate? I know that it will never go my way (i own both consoles so exclusives are no issue for me). to me it makes people seem a bit lazy. If you care that much about a tournament and are that determined to win, won’t you do anything to get better and win? You don’t really need a PS3, you just need to play on one. This can cost you nothing. Or maybe $5 to buy your chum some beer so he lets you use it. I just would like to see these characters in competitive play mainly because as someone who likes to play competitively, I get excited only to get disappointed when I realize that these characters will never see the light of day in a tournament.
Agreed, except for that last part. I’m pretty sure Sony wont let their stuff on an MS console.
It’s still something that someone on the other console doesn’t have to do, which counts as a disadvantage.
8 people voted for PS3 only so far. I wonder how many of them realize that not all tournaments use only PS3s? There’s no need to put this sort of pressure on tournament organizers, especially since the previously followed model of banning console exclusives has worked perfectly fine.
Console exclusives have been insta-ban in the past because there were console exclusives on both sides. There was no one clear better option, which does exist in this case.
If Cole is a legitimate character, and not broken in some fundamental way, then why should I not be able to use him in a PS3 tournament? It’d be a shame to cut off parts of the game just for the sake of the 360 when the 360 gives nothing in return.
If there were other reasons to use 360, this would be entirely different, but with our current information, saying PS3 exclusives are unfair to 360 players is like saying console characters were unfair against international competition in vanilla, or even to say that ver. 2012 is unfair to people who play on PC, or even to say that using Gen is unfair because you don’t have any local players. As absurd as these might be, they all stem from the same argument.
Yeah so essentially we’re only talking about Box Art Megaman and Pac-man because the other 3 are Sony exclusives (Cole being from US Exclusive and the cats being from JP exclusive)
I don’t remember for sure but aren’t all Major tournaments PS3 (count for EVO points etc etc)? I know EVO is PS3. There is also no pressure here, as far as I’m concerned this is just a way to open discussion about these characters who I personally would love to see in tournament play. I’m kind of ignoring the poll only because the wording is a bit off in it. But its good to discuss this sort of thing so in the future we can look at it again and maybe make some changes
It all just boils down to SFxT lack of F*cks for tournament play.
Honestly I have a feeling SFxT won’t be basking in tournament light for too long after release. I’m guessing some mode without “gems” will be the only one anyone cares about playing. Which version becomes the norm depends on the consoles handling of the games. It will come down to one of these:
A) It plays better on the PS3. PS3 version becomes the norm and thus the dlc characters are playable.
B) It plays better on the xbox or it plays the same on both. DLC characters are banned.
No. 360 users that only play on 360 have no ability to use or even test what works and what does not work vs. whatever ps3 exclusive character. A fighting game tournament has to cater to the majority of the players, and by doing this, you split the playerbase and it automatically favors ps3 players as a result.

Sort of, except the console version was released in Japan and players could buy the games with the same characters and learn on their own. Also, online in Japan was/is far more stable than the US.
-
PS3 SFxT and 360 SFxT are pretty much two different games with the exclusive characters. The dynamic changes and you have more matchups to worry about.
-
No. Training mode allows you to learn about a character without playing it. You can record moves and see what beats whatever move.
vvvvvv
The bottom line is to get DLC characters that aren’t exclusive to Microsoft or Sony, so that they can be put on both copies of the game. Any exclusive character can, should, and definitely will be banned in tournament play. I can’t believe that anyone would argue against this.
Words to live by right here.
not all TO run on PS3. Anyone who wants to main the 5 console characters probably didn’t think that thought through and/or is not a serious tournament player.
very surprised people voted for option A, way to alienate a good chunk of the FGC.
This is one time where extra characters exclusive to one console do not put me under a pillar of salt. Ban them (or rather “bun dem”); I won’t miss Pacman or Trollman in a game like this. I’m more disappointed that the producers would find this more interesting than putting in characters people actually want to use in a game like this.
I don’t want to turn into a crusader on this topic, but I still just don’t get the arguments to ban these characters. Most talk is about alienating people, but this whole topic is from the perspective of a 360 owner. 360 owners benefit more by being able to play a more full, complete game that may not be available for their home use if they choose not to buy a PS3 ($150 on ebay, way cheaper than suggested in this topic). I really don’t get who is being alienated. Who are the losers by going to a PS3 standard? I can only see winners (current 360 owners) and bigger winners (current PS3 owners) with a PS3 standard. I also dread the future of fighting games if we consider $150 to buy a new console too much to ask of a small portion of the current community given that the next generation of fighting games will be for new consoles that cost far, far more than $150 and not just some but all players will need to buy them to be able to play at all. SFxT may be an even more critical game since it may be the last fighting game we can ever play when all future fighting games don’t support PS3 or Xbox360.
I also think a lot of people are moving against these characters becuase they’re “troll” inclusions or whatever, and that is completely ridiculous. Characters are characters. From a competitive perspective, some are good and some are bad at making the user win but otherwise we can’t judge which are “right” or “wrong”. It’s just not the place for a competitive community to say that bad box art Megaman is a less worthwhile inclusion in a fighting game than Ryu since at that point you’re saying that some characters have more inherent virtue than others just based on who they are, and that’s not a far step away from saying that people who use M.O.D.O.K. or Phoenix Wright in UMvC3 are somehow beneath people who use more popular characters. It’s a dangerous rabbit hole, and I think the only reasonable position is that “a character is a character, and we don’t judge beyond that”.
What I dislike is that I’ll get these charcters per random >_> I love random, but I don’t want to play as exclusive, tournament banned characters. they might not be banned in the first place, but a tournament that runs on a 360 has an ‘auto-ban’ by default.
