"Not fat enough? We can fix that!" Rufus Match-up Thread

My first Seth encounter with rufus…

im pretty sure you could of hit another j. RK when you hit with the second hit of your j.RK.

This is more goofiness but sometimes that’s just how you have to play it: cross-up j.MK (not dive kick) works really well against a standing Blanka. From about 1/1.5 Rufus’s away. It’s really really easy to connect a st.HP after that cross-up too.

edit: this also works quite easily on Rufus too. I bet it’s the same for all the fatties.

If Blanka does the rainbow roll or whatever it is, the one that travels in an arc, you can start a focus attack when he’s about to hit you and then release when he lands, and you will get him every time I think, I haven’t really tested it though. You can do it easily on reaction.

This also works with Honda’s sumo smash thing or whatever it is, the one where he flies into the air and then slams down on the ground.

However, the the main reason you would want to do this instead of block is that regardless of whether or not either cross you up, you will still be able to hit them if you time it right. It also gives you Ultra meter, which is quite valuable for Rufus. =P

Ok, so it seems like the Ryu is the new Sagat/Ken mix (fireballs + SRK’s on jump in). I’m actually having a problem with this new Ryu army that are pretty much all the same. I either focus/divekick over the first ball so Im about 2 characters away from him then I’m pretty much stuck (with or without meter). I do jump-in, I get SRK’ed. Roll, SRK. Messiah (EX or not), SRK (because my invincibility runs out). I’m losing to these scrub Ryu’s who are spamming SRK’s (usually LP but not always) and fireballs and I really have nothing to get in on. I try to bait with neutral jump but after a while that doesn’t work. My only feasible option it seems is cr. HP to get him to move a bit. I’m curious what other people are doing to combat this?

Edit: Also forgot to add that Ryu & Ken’s jumping roundhouse is REALLY pissing me off. I hate how that thing CLEANLY beats any of my air attacks at any timing (for the most part). Even when I try to AA it I usually only get a partial trade with him (I typically do st. HP bc they jump in too shallow for cr. MP). Any ideas? (other than FA)

Any decision to move forward besides walking puts you at risk of getting hit. That’s just a fact of life, accept it. That being said, Rufus has almost infinite choices to control his distance while advancing. Most of the flexibility comes from the dive kick, but you can also choose various strength messiahs, snakes, and tornados (and let’s not forget good ol’ dashing). Keep in mind you don’t have to close the gap all in one shot, nor do you have to get there immediately. For instance you can lp snake or tornado to stall while building meter and intimidating (both also offer some degree of projectile protection).

Eventually 90% of shotos will take the initiative and jump at you. I personally love lp snakestrike as AA. I don’t need to predict anything and it doesn’t hang me out to dry (plus you gotta love the facial it gives to tatsus).

Usually I would try and get in mid screen range, then from there I would have to predict the next Hadouken so I could time my J.HP an follow up with any combo from there. If they not spamming any hadoukens and there just waiting for you to jump in, either bait the shoryuken with a low Dive Kick or just roll towards them. Not too close just near enough for the foot to connect I think it’s a “counter hit” to shoryukens; if it doesn’t hit just block, if it does then do what you want. Sometimes the scrubs try an get smart with the sweep if you try to dive kick near to them, so just back dash for your invincibility frames.

I swear Shoryuken’s or Tiger uppercut’s don’t Armor break unless it is a reversal EG: wake-up shoryuken?

htf do you get out of blanka’s walk forward jab-elec pressure (assuming you play a blanka good enough to do that)? mash ex jesus?

/bussed up by the mullah

Either way your going to have to block the jab first then, Cr.MK to EX/LP - Galactic Tornado or pull of the Ex Jesus kick.

Just block it all unless it’s at the maximum range of his jab, maybe then you can block the jab and then cr. mk xx ex tornado him.

What does he do to set up the walk up jab xx elec pressure in the first place? Perhaps maybe it’s an issue of just keeping him from doing that in the first place.

sorry man I can’t even remember the set-ups, I felt like a schoolkid getting told off; I got bullied and it didn’t feel nice

just need to severely level up I think : /

edit: will def. be mindful of the range of the jabs next time tho and punish accordingly, thx

I was wondering if anyone has tried Forward HP against Blanka Ball? In theory it sounds like it could work (granted it’s start-up time is long) but I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t work in REAL life. I was just wondering if anyone has tried (intentionally or not) and have seen a result?

Second question I have is regarding Gief and his damn Lariat. What do you guys do for a Gief spamming Lariat to get in close? I know cr. HP beats it at certain times (which I rarely can achieve) but any jump-ins, messiah (ex or not, ex bc i lose my invincibility frames by the time it gets to him), etc get beat cleanly. Any suggestions?

Last question: Does Dive Kick beat out REGULAR (not EX) butt splash for Honda on wake-up (Honda waking-up, not Ruf)? I rarely play honda but was playing one today and was getting beat with his EX but he never tried a normal one on wake-up.

Gief’s lariat spam approach, maybe St. HP? There’s a certain distance to it, I believe 1.5 characters away… IIRC.

On Honda, Crossups seem to stuff ANYTHING he throws out at me… I can’t tell if he’s headbutting or slamming, because he just goes into his recoil hit animation. I’ve been winning against every Honda out there, haven’t lost to one ever since I learned this.

Blanka - I only use St.MP for more damage then the normal Jab, not to sure if the F.HP would work well, you would need to predict it an get that on point.

Zangeif - Played him today when he spams Lariat, Cr.HP only beats it at the end of the animation. But if you just do St.HP just outside the range of his Lariat it will beat it clean all the time.

Honda - hes my 2nd main, Honda beats Rufus Dive Kick at the beginning of the animation since hes got invincibility frames at start up, but when hes coming down i’ am not to sure you may trade hits or just EX Snake Strike since Rufus has invincibility frames at start up and it should do decent amount of damage as well.

Are the invincibility frames for the normal butt splash? Does that apply also for headbutt on wake-up? Like F1xxy was saying, would a cross-up DK on wake-up stuff the butt splash? Thanks for the help Kritz & F1xxy.

Yeah I think it does for when I use Butt splash to avoid fireball spam I think its only the Mid & High, that get the invincibility frames on start up. Also yes it does apply on wake-up as well.
Done testing…
Honda butt splash - You can only punish while hes reached his peak in the air, if you try it too early you will get hit. If hes waking up an he uses Fierce Butt splash EX massiah wont work, It will only work on Med an Low.

Thanks for testing Kritz. I’m assuming if EX mess doesn’t work then any angle of DK wouldn’t work either for wake-up butt splash? :-/ By the way, what do you do to test, use 2 controllers? I feel bad for asking but Im not sure what people do to test themselves.

Just put the settings on record in practice mode then do what you need to do, then go back to settings and select playback.
I assume that EX massiah will only work close up because he rises up at start of the move.

Ahhhhhh, when I saw that option I was thinking it was just to playback your stuff to WATCH not to USE. Good stuff, I’ll be asking less stupid questions now…hopefully :wgrin:

Just encase no one knows how to counter;

Vega’s - Flying Barcelona

When hes coming down and is about to claw you just Focus absorb the attack an dash into him then Grab, works all the time 100%.
If you know hes going to grab from the air just duck down at the last moment messes up the timing for them or just roll out of it.
