Northern California 3s Ranbats

It was single elim x_x? Good to hear there was a satisfactory turnout. GJ to Jimmy for GETTING IT AWAY!!! :shake:

NEXT RANBAT IS FEB 23. They are run bi-weekly.

Once again just stressing this, in case people might’ve missed it before (which I am sure of). Time to find the cure next time.

is the whole single elimination thing going to continue indefinitely?

sounds like it was fun…hopefully i can stay for the next one

Since it’s been brought up quite a few times, there’s now debate whether or not we’re either going to have double elim [best of 1 each match], keep single elim [but make it 2 out of 3], or to keep it single elim and best of 1.

I’m all for keeping it single elim best of 1 because people will actually play seriously, but there seems to be a number of people that would rather have it changed. Post if you have input on this. However, in the interest of keeping the entrants happy, I’ll say it’s most likely going to change to either 2/3 single elim, or best of 1 double elim.

Also, there’s a huge probability that we’re going to permanently hold the Ranbats at SVGL, seeing as the MGL staff is starting to get on our case for, IMO, very minor things [Weeklies = 15 people on avg, Ranbat = 25 people, and that increase in 10 people means we must inform MGL staff that we’re having the tournament, because they ‘might not want us to run it’], and also the fact that Lyle and Jimmy really fucking hate that place. Since we all <3 Lyle and Jimmy, SVGL is looking like a stronger possibility at this point.

It all comes down to this: Some people don’t want to go to SVGL, and some people just can’t make it to SVGL. Hopefully this won’t displace too many people - we like large turnouts. Really though, if you can go to SVGL to attend the Ranbats, then do so. If you can’t, then perhaps it could be arranged that someone living nearby or somethingsomething could just pick you up on the way to the Ranbat.

It’s up to you guys though. The first Ranbat went relatively well, and I’d like to keep it going that way.

i didn’t attend this first ranbat, but i think you should change the format to single elim. best 2 out of 3. this way everyone get’s more playing time (which is what this is all about right?) plus it it might force some players to adapt how they play if they have 2 or 3 matches against the same person.

sailorsaturn sorry I missed your Ranbats dude I don’t drive long story. See you at seth’s house if it’s going down next week.

DDouble elim, i am really cruzink rught noi but i think im gettin my poinyt across, double ELIM letz go! get hyp-e for chi[potle!!!GVKH_HI^$%^(&TOUGLJBN< BXDT^_*

Well, if you’re going to change the format, which I actually don’t mind that much since like you said, it incourages serious playing, how can you go to SVGL. They have 1 cab, changing formats with make the ranbats at least 2 hours longer and very boring for those waiting.

single match double elim imo seems like the best option. having a ranbat single elim, completely eliminates a player to showcase their skills and/or improvement in tournament. if they get unlucky and are put up against someone much better than them, they’re fucked. if they just seem to have a bad first round, then at least they can make up for it and try again. if u happen to run them at svgl, enforce a strick time schedule which will make everyone aware that you are serious about running the runbats on time. direct feed for footage would also be nice, maybe we make that happen at svgl?

2 of 3 is always favored by me because imo it embodies the whole essence of tournament gameplay. You get to play first game and try to figure out your opponent / get used to sticks, etc. and then second / third game is adjusting your style / characters to better your previous games. It gives everyone the opportunity to display their strategic gameplay as well as their pure skill. One game in 3rd Strike is way too fast for most players to play anywhere near their full potential.

My main concern is that too many people will get eliminated because the sticks were shitty or something else totally unrelated to their actual skill as a player…and this will deter them and others from attending future ranbats. I think the important part is having some sort of second chance for players to redeem themselves, whether it be 2 of 3 single elimination or one game double elimination. Either option would still run smoothly within the given time frame, and would be a more inviting tourney atmosphere overall.

Put it this way: I want one match for every dollar I donate to Jimmy. So if I’m handing him $2 every other Friday, I wanna get my ass kicked at least twice.

 so true…

 this is the best argument i’ve heard so far.

And regarding the ranbats being relocated to SVGL – there seems to be the potential for some people to become bored if the same turnout were to continue because they have only 1 cab. Maybe? Ehh?

sorry i couldnt be there guys. turned out i had/have neumonia -.- will be there for the next one for sure though

i attended the first ranbat, i was the dudley that placed 25th t.t

was fun though.

anyways, i think 2 out of 3 single elim, or single match double elim is a good format. better for those that have to drive 1.5-2 hours to get to MGL (i.e. me). it sucks to drive all the way and get knocked out in one match. plus, it allows for more playtime which = more chance to improve.

double elim is going to take way 2 long if it is at svgl, especially with only one cab.

Is it too late to get in on this? I just heard about it.

Yeah, same here. Im from Stockton, but ill get to any close tournies within the area. Dont have 3S here, so i wanna play some.

And where is this, cuz i have no idea what ranbats is, but sounds like a fun tourney.

From what I picked up in reading the thread it’s at the Milpitas golfland in well Milpitas. A Ranbat is basically a series of tournaments where you accumulate points depending on where you rank. These points are totalled at the end of a tournament season and a winner is declared.

Ok, as I stated I’m all for single elim + best of one formats [which is how it’s really supposed to be]. But people are bringing up that it’s more fair to some people and out of towners to give in more games so they have less chance of fucking up/getting randomed out. That’s fine, but since this is going to SVGL, this’ll be on one cab now.

The ranbat we held at MGL started at 8:30, and ended around 10:00-10:30~, and that was with 25 people. That’s not bad, considering we also had a delay in the middle of it. If we start promptly at 8:00 [like we’re supposed to], then I’m sure we’ll be done before or by 12:00, which is closing time.

Also, it’s not too late join in on the Ranbats. If you’re avail. on the Ranbat date and time, just come in and sign up.

A couple points

  1. gg to all

  2. you left a . out of my name

  3. I personaly would not be sad if any of my matches didn’t see the light of day:sweat:

  4. as for moving the tourney from mgl to svgl I have no problem with (never liked mgl either) but last i checked svgl is less tourney friendly then mgl and add in the fact it only has one cab hurts more.

If you are going to do this someone better run this by Jason preferably, if not at least Dave or Matt

Then get Ron to actually replace the first players jab switch as it double triggers/doesn’t come out randomly

If not don’t be surprized if the first svgl 3s ranbat is the last:sad:

  1. Finally for format I think it should be best of one double elim random seeding but thats just me
