So what does everyone think about Mr. Karate? Sat down with him for a bit today, then got to play Ed with him for a bit.
My verdict… pale in comparison to Takuma. Decent in close character. Still, you give up a lot of good options and strengths of Takuma for… not much in return IMO. Easier hit confirms, some air options, but you lose your zoning and command grab game. Basically, what makes Takuma good isn’t there.
Had a great time hosting last night. I hope everyone had a good time last night and felt like they leveled up in some aspect of their respective games. For future reference I’ll probably start hosting Tuesday and/or Wednesday nights depending on how my schedule works with my usual crowd of folks. Also good luck to you guys running the tourneys at Champps, would be out there tonight but I finally get to see my school play in a home game lol
Yeah, the guy that gave us permission to use their venue says that its slow on wednesdays, so its perfect for their buisness as well @_@, but what can you do?
BTW, WNB Tournament is today, I posted a banner some where above this post, hope to see unfamiliar (or familiar) faces
Does anyone live in Windsor near Governors Road? I’ll have to drive to the area alot starting next week for work related things and wouldn’t mind playing some games when I get off before I drive home. SSF4 or UMvC3.
Nah, I’m talking about people who have actually played him.
The only thing Takuma really has over Mr. Karate it seems like is keepaway and that he can follow up his command grab for free, which would be a pretty big advantage if it didn’t have start-up. Plus Mr. Karate’s EX Command Grab has full invincibility and tracks full-screen, too.
But yeah, Mr. Karate can juggle and corner carry just as well as Takuma and he does just as much damage. But in exchange for Takuma’s mediocre fireballs, what he gets more than makes up for 2 of Takuma’s biggest problems: excellent anti-air and defense.
Takuma may have more options for command grab in terms of opening people up, but he has absolutely nothing to stop offensive or defensive short hops at close range.
I still think there’s no way Kyo isn’t #1, but Mr. Karate is def top-tier material and will probably be better than Takuma in the long run.
I think the biggest reason everyone is so high on him right now is because he’s one of the few characters in this game that FEEL like an actual KOF character in terms of pressure and offense. Which basically means that once he gets in, he can typically stay in, and all of his BnBs allow for reset or massive frame advantage to keep offense going.
By the way, a lot of top KOF players still believe Saiki is at least Top 5. He’s actually winning tournaments now, and he still has a long way to go for people to unlock his full potential.
Just sat down in training mode with him to flesh him out some more and see where he might have some cheese.
When I fought Ed I was being zoned with Joes hurricane uppers a lot and that was giving me some issues with Karate, but I sat down in record and found out his counter will parry fireballs and teleport him in point blank from full screen. That’s pretty good.
I think Takuma’s fireballs is one of the better ones personally, and if they try to jump he has C ranbu to beat whatever they’re doing in the air. It’s really the command grab that makes him scary since he can do 80-100% off of it. Mr. Karate’s run grab is pretty slow actually so he’ll be stuck with short hop / lows and what not for mixup. Which, being Takuma, that’s not bad at all. he might also be able to guard break decently with his dash cancel stuff so I dunno. He’s not bad, but he’s definitely a whole nother beast from Takuma and I really think Takuma himself is S tier or atleast really high A tier. Him and Kyo are definitely the best chracters.
But yeah long story short, Mr. Karate’s strengths are… I dunno. He’s just an in close character like Hwa Jai but IMO hwa does what Karate does a little better, but Karate has a get in for free option with counter.
The normal counter has start up. Ex counter has gaurd point on it which is what you need to stop the projectile rape, but it will cost you a whole stock.
And if you use the wrong move and get death touched we will know that you have not been playing enough. RDU.
OMW to EZ, gotta play with Mr. Karate and NEST Kyo. My buddy Kenshiro called me from NE, he’s using him in training mode now and says he’s a beast. He’s the guy who beat Humbag at Frosty Fausting. Also did the KOF 13 commentary, legendary gamer!! NE Stand up!
