Though I woulda never believed it a few months ago, Fenrir has a lot potential. I know we got another player (vZakat) who uses it as well, and gets some of the best (if not best) damage output I’ve seen with Maori. Guard crush super is pretty nice too.
I really need to catch up on the newer RPG’s though haven’t played any since the disappointment known as Star Ocean 4). Feel like I’m missing out on a lot of good stuff nowadays. Tbh I haven’t been able to give any of these newer games a chance (like New Vegas or Darks Souls)… And lol at Fisherman’s Horizon. That would be my choice next to Treno.
Treno is without a doubt S-rank. I’d hang out at that pub where nothing works and everyone is basically a troll or moogle thief. They have like half a canoe on the wall, nice bed, it’s great.
the beauty of Uncharted are the set pieces though. the game feels just like one of those guilty pleasure straight to dvd action movies that usually end up being better than the majority of big budget releases. it has a driving narrative and Drake is the perfect plucky main character. it also really helps that the voice acting is so well done.
but moving on…found a perfect place to live in Raleigh, the only issue is that i now need (as in NEED) employment ASAP. i hate to ask, but if you RDU guys could keep your ears open for me. sadly i cant do anything EMS related anymore because of my back but if its light lifting, moving, pushing, and pulling i should be fine.
What kind of employment are you looking to work or max commuting? The thing is pretty sure it’d be like 20 minutes away although like I said all depends on where your at in Raleigh but I could more than likely get you a job where I work. It’s definitely “ok” cash if you are able to work certain hours (either mornings on weekdays or closing shifts at night) and even more than “ok” if you managed to work some of the other departments. Otherwise since i’m still within the company and a very influential person since i’ve made a few achievements for the place and been there for 4 years I can try my best to get you a job with the other stores nearby in Raleigh.
Yeah Drake is the linchpin for that thing. He’s a fun guy, but I feel judging by your response that we’re not quite on the same level here. My point wasn’t to say that Uncharted is a ‘bad game’. We were just talking about player control in response to JImmy’s video. Mentioning Uncharted…it was more just an example of heavily scripted gaming to compare with lots of other new games Like Deus Ex-HR, Dark Souls, and Fallout 3 that get their cues from titles like Half life 2, games that are really open with their gameplay experience.
As far as an actual value judgement, do I like playing through ‘sets’? Not that much tbh, sure you get to shoot and run a bit but when the game wants to do something really wild it takes the control out of your hands and just shows it to you. MGS4 was like this all the time, why were there more cut scenes of raiden fighting vamp then moments where you actually fought him, c’mon devs…
Uncharted isn’t my thing but I wouldn’t try and stop it from being yours, I’m not a bully, lol. I’m aware that people have good reasons for liking this kind of thing-- it wasn’t one person buying all those copies
edit, why am i lol’in so much in this post what a lapse in form
Demo, I have a small odd job for you if you think you can handle it? I need a medallion out of this stone temple under a lake. I was gonna get it with my grappling hook but a shadow jimmy stole it and ran inside. You sound perfect for the job, almost overqualified.
I tried to quote someone from the other thread and it was locked…so
Here is how someone in the Marvel forums explained it to me:
People who want 90s Marvel characters = nostalgia
People who want MvC2 characters = not Marvel fans
Apparently getting Dr. Strange, Rocket Raccoon, Nova…etc are all very pleasing to the guys who follow the CURRENT generation of Marvel comics and feel like finally characters who NEVER get the recognition as opposed to the same old vanilla X-men from the 90s will have their day in the sun. The 90s characters, most of whom are DEAD or have been mentioned dozens and dozens of time really shut out a lot of other possibilities for what could be.
As much as Gambit and Venom might be cool, honestly I like how X-23 and Modok turned out looking at what Capcom did with them.
The game would feel like an HD remix if we had Silver Samurai, Jin Satome, Omega Red and Sabretooth…lets be honest.
I actually really appreciate Lucerne’s epic paragraph posts, because it’s really refreshing to see that level of deep thought put into a discussion about games. Even though he’s talking about stuff I can’t relate to for whatever reason (I don’t think I’ve played any of the games mentioned except for Super Metroid and SOTN), I still really enjoy reading that stuff.
Hey, we mostly just talk about the Arcana gatherings on the Arcana site. I figured all the Arcana players knew about it already, but if not, yeah we generally do Tuesday or Thursday, go to Bali first at 6:30 and then play until about 10:30. It did start out private, but since more people are interested in the game now I’m up to hosting however many want in. I was burnt out on hosting things a while back but now it seems like so long ago that I did big gatherings lol.
Well to be fair, there’s a lot of stuff going on in scenes like that which isn’t possible during gameplay. I think stuff like that is there to establish characters and give you a feel for how bad ass certain ones are. I mean they could have just had you fight Vamp and you run around doing your thing but it wouldn’t have shown you just what vamp and raiden can do… and a lot of the time, atleast for me, I get so caught up in the gameplay part of it that I miss out on the details. Plus you just can’t have those types of crazy moves and intense back and forth action in the actual gameplay. And if it’s YOU doing it, it just doesn’t get the same point across. I can pick Dan and beat up Akuma but I’d never think Dan was a bad ass for that since it was ME beating Akuma and not Dan. If it happens in a cut scene though, completely different story.
And I agree with Blake, you guys obviously put a lot of thought into this stuff, it’s interesting to read. I don’t really analyze it like that when I play, since I tend to be more focused on gameplay aspects… fighting games have ruined me lol
As far as cut scenes go, I feel like they should be a reward for beating a boss or to establish characters, but not one every 3 steps… sometimes it gets in the way of the gameplay. If you look at a game like Ninja Gaiden, it only really does cutscenes at the beginning and end of all the levels, I think that’s ideal and helps break things up without getting in the way of things.
I was wondering if there was interest would we do some special launch day 1 event at EZ for KOF13 (it’d be Nov 22). Of course i’m just basing it off the hope that it’s a good game and from hearing how NC used to dig KOF more than anything. I definitely wouldn’t mind driving up there for it.
At least MGS4 was cinematic, it was a really good end to Snake’s saga, actually pretty emotional. Sad to see it all end that way, even thought Snake didnt die.
Hell of a lot better than MGS2 where they called Raiden’s bitch ass on codec every 5 minutes to teach you how to open a door with a card key. Jesus christ.
@Samurai X, that’s the thing though. I don’t think those are necessarily good ways to make an interesting character. Lots of characters are ‘badass’, but this is such a narrow slice of existence, its like-- the key reason why most game characters are so poorly written. Can you imagine Akuma on a saturday morning? Does he even have enough scope to his character to cover a full day? He wakes up at 6 then he goes to the dark dojo… and trains for 12 hours… I suppose… well you get the point. This doesn’t really matter when we’re playing a fighting game, but if Akuma as we currently know him was put in any other game it’d get really superficial really fast. Cutscenes can be good, certainly-- but at other times they’re just crutches.
edit: YYB has a good point here, at points the radio chatter was just a lazy way to move parts of the game along, lots of expository dialogue, etc.
I just want a little more balance between the two. Sure you show a little sparring, some visual drama-- thats fine, but the thing with vamp in mgs4 is that there is almost nothing else to him. He’s a device that lets the player see how cool Raiden is. If what Vamp and Raiden can do is so unique and so important, why not build this into the game on a more fundamental level? I mean imagine if you got to the scene with Raiden spinning geckoes around with his legs and whatever. Sure, we all saw that and remember it, but what if you got to chuck some at Vamp yourself right after? We all win.
Silent Hill 2 is a good example. James is not a very dextrous character. He doesn’t run very fast and he can’t do anything that spiffy-- but he doesn’t need to. He’s just an average guy, the key to his character though, to knowing him unfolds as you play the game and experience ‘silent hill’. This was obviously more than enough for even most casual gamers as Silent Hill 2 is popular and highly rated. So yeah, sure a little pre fight teaser is fun-- but don’t just leave me out of the picture entirely. Suikoden 2 did something amazing here too, really standout characters? You didn’t fight them with the games default battle system, you ‘dueled’ them. It was a different system, different music, even a different camera and it made those characters really stand out. You got to see their unique attacks, etc and it was still fun gamin’.
I like Uncharted… I never played Demon Souls, gotta check it out.
I’m running Sal-T Thursday this week just like last week until more FG Hype is produced. Thus if you wanna play, post in this thread (or call me) that you and whoever is comin over.Games will be the usual. Gotta get in Some MVC3 practice, been playin and doing alright lately. Been kinda burned out on Current Gen Fighters,so yea…
I don’t really follow you. It’s a song from the soundtrack of fairly mainstream (from the japanese perspective) film. Like 2001–I think it’s something you listen to when you’re generally interested in music and people and listen to it from lots of different areas/times. Smokin Jo happens to be a grown man who actually lived in Japan, we’re not trading secret indie files here, lol.
