No vids of US SF's 'Golden Era' & best_ever player!?

hey crayfish the ssf2 book did comeout over here (it had super then super turbo in it) i got it from W H Smiths in 1994 or 95 but nobody seemed interested at the time cause of mortal combat and the fact that there seemed to be a 2D backlash in the uk (ps1 Coming out and all). people went tekken 1 mad.

i only have the sf2 ce/sf2 turbo book and the ssf2/ssf2t book, i thought there was only ever two books and both had two games each in them

Cool, I would really like to see the SSF2 book, could you pls tell me the isbn/issn no. The CE/Turbo book ur refering to is the Gamepro converted Nin system MAg/ Mean machines Sega one right? ISSN 1350 - 3901 (see Tomo intvw scans)

TOMO INTERVIEW & 94 MIDEWEST SSF2 TOURNEY SCANS

I got my scanner out and digitised the most historicaly interesting pages from the GamePro Hyperfighting guidebook and the Augst94 ST guide SSF2 tourney report. The HF guide pages are the interview with Tomo, I scanned in quite big so you can see the ranking board behind Tomo, check out our Jeff at no.2 and Knui Funada at no.4 among many other big names.
The Aug94 GamePro is the SSF2 Midwest tourney report. Check a very youthful looking Mike Watson. I remember when we first read about that tactic ‘The Mike’, we were like ‘woa, thats rank’ (rank was early 90’s UK slang for repulsive/dirty) lol:badboy:

Crayfish.

Hello crayfish.

i got the book out now and theissn no. is 1357-6135, its gamepro Uk price £4.95
unlike the gamepro ce/turbo mag the scans in this mag were taken from arcade and not snes.

ps. you are right about the converted nintendo/mean meachines mag.

i don’t hear anything about the mexican sensation Alex Valle. Was this before his time? How did valle hold up against these cats? Also, where does jwong fit into the pic? What do og peeps like Schafer + others think about wongtinel?

can’t believe you called him mexican…thats fucked up.

BTW, Vegas A1 tourney:

Choi
Watson
Tony Ngo
Valle
Schaefer

Derek

yeah, alot of people thinks everyone that looks/speaks spanish is from mexico; that sux…
crayfish: thx a lot for the scans…I still have the gamepro with the ssf2 torny that Mike Watson won…it’s the spanish version, of course heheeh…tha mag was pretty popular back then here in colombia  I never saw the Tomo interview though, cool stuff! in the review of the torny, they said that tomo held the torny but didn’t play (I’m not sure, I’ll better check out the mag :D) anyway, all those guys were (and still are, I think) legends…I used to read that stuff and pray someday I’d get to know someone that skilled…does anyone has ANY info on California Mortal Kombat Association? I know mk has never been as much as venerated as sf, but reading about martin vega, eddie ferrier and other mk players back then was hot!

I have it.

Ill see what I can do.

You’d need to talk to DreamTR or Shirts.

And here I was thinking that I was the only one who felt that way. It would be cool to play against you & Tomo. Heck, your SF mantra alone is good enough for me to warrant a match :karate:

Quick question for you Jeff…since there is a “possibility” that HF might be in attendance at next year’s Evo, is there a chance that you and/or Tomo might make an appearance to at least play some casuals? If so, it would be great to play against a fellow old school’er who shares a similar view on SF2.

As far as Justin Wong is concerned, I don’t believe any assessment can be made since he only plays ST. Now, if he were to play HF that might be a different story…

wow, cant believe people actually care about the history of this game. thought that most of the gamers now love combos and xcopying stuff from jap vids. old school sf is hard to explain. i believe the main skill in a tournament was bringing a new style or even a type of new tactic. there was no internet videos to break down and learn someones pattern, so you just had to have to have awesome addaptation skills. this is where so cal dominated. we had a much broader knowledge, and if you wanna test my opinion of fact, just ask jason cole who showed nor cali all about balrog. anyways, i hang out with jeff once in a while and too bad we dont play SF really. it just gets so competitive and its not even a fun battle anymore. if people want to play jeff, im sure hes up for it, just that its like a lost cause. there is a definite lack of motivation. as for tomo, i havent spoke to him in maybe 3-4 years, and once again (fucking jeff, gimme his number), im sure he lost his motivation to play when he hit 16, something like that. he went more in partying, dj, chicks, and his nos civic!! and to answer the question about mk, funny you bring up martin vega. he is my best friend irl and has been for over 10 years. jason wilson was never around during that time when mk2 was around, but shirts was. he was probably the best with his bitch ass milena. stupid fucking whore with projectiles for free by releasing a button about 1/4 inch off the floor. the sagat of mk… sad… LOL. anyways, laters

watts

thx Mike for answering  a true pleasure to seeing u post. man, I always read about you and the other guys and :open_mouth: mannnn even here we experienced the true feelin’ of ol’ school…those times were great. big props to all os sf and any fighter players…we have some legends here as well  the guys don’t play anymore but r still good…

Jeff, plz make the dvd thing, I’m sure you’ll drive people nuts!! and the guy that said he has the tomo tape, plz share!! hehe…

nki, what’s up man? it’s been a while  good to hear from ya…

HALE KING tomo, if what crayfish says is true then my hat goes off to him he sounds shit hot,was he good on the arcade or console or both:clap:

I Just watched the SSF2 vid and the Ryu player was pretty good. One thing I noticed is that they don’t go all out with throws at all. Especially the Sim players. The only one I saw throwing was Chun. Good vid. Makes me wanna go play Zbattle :karate:

That finishing match with Sagat Vs Ryu was great(HF)! Talk about stylish finish!

some how i knew you would like that:clap: cause your a classy finisher aswell…

I was living in Miami at the time, I only moved to Los Angeles in 1997, so I was not around for the “golden age” of SF/MK in California, but we had pretty decent comp for MK and SF in Miami back then, and I have been playing since 1991, so I am as old school as it gets competitvely. It’s still full of old men that talk about the old school days and are over 30, but none of them play anything anymore because everything is crap nowadays, and there really is no scene…

AS far as MK2 goes, I had a little experience with Shirts and Jeff Schaefer that I am sure one of them will bring to light if anyone wants some funny history on top MK players in the USA, but that’s for another thread

That reminds me, I was at a wedding recently, and I freaking saw Aric Tetley there, wtf!

This guy sucks at MK. I owned him up with my scorpion!

DreamTR " High Kick, Ground Pound, Repeat!" Shit dont work on me bitch! OH YEA!

Jeff,

Someone pointed me to this thread, So im coming out of my “cave” to respond. Those days are foggy for some but the truth of the matter was that version (Super Turbo) was Sunnyvales golden era. We dominated anyone on the planet in that version. As for your record, Dont you recall claiming your Balrog was unbeatable by Dhalsim then shortly getting double perfected by Alex my brother? My Sagat did a number on you as well. The 33 or 32 to 0 was in reverse, we lost no games against you man. We would let other people take over and when they lost the other person would play, me or him. Its ok though its been a long time and I don’t blame you for forgetting what really occured =)

Graham

wow the extremes on two different sides. 33-0, or 0-33.

such is the mystery of og sf.

Well I havent posted on these forums in like 2 years or maybe more, for me to come here and post probably is due to me wanting to set the record straight for people who want to know what the old days were like =)
