Wow.

…Wow. Hopefully he does. I don’t know if he would want to be recognized as one the best players ever though, he seemed a bit reluctant to go to FFA a few years back because of it.

That would be really, really cool.

Who’s Jeff Schaefer?

Jeff Schaefer is known for his snake style of play. You can find some clips of his OG’ness against Daigo on youtube.

The overall quality of play at World’s Finest was higher and strategy and info was widely available to all the elite players.

Thanks for this thread guys!!!

Really awesome stuff!

Good to hear from an NYC’er about the old days. I’ve always been interested in hearing how the NYC arcade scene was back in those days. It was much more than just CTF back then. Arcade spots were EVERYWHERE in almost every hood, and of course there was the cluster of arcades in the Midtown/Times Square area (which I never did get to visit before the Giuliani Administration shuttered them in the mid-1990’s revitalization of Times Square).

I sort of miss the randomness and grit of the NYC arcade scene back in the '90’s. Of course, I don’t miss the fact that some, if not many were havens for crime, drug dealing and other shit, which is a big reason why they got shuttered!

What a great thread! It would be awesome if someone sets up a HF cab to record Tomo.

EGM always used to brag about Sushi-X being the best SF player. They never revealed his true identity though and he disappeared from the review crew.

Damn that was a great read guys.

It would be great if we could somehow gather everyone up for a meet up at evo to have exhibition matches so everyone can see how OG you guys play. That would garner so such hype the turnout would be legendary.

Great read, I love knowing the history of everything I try to compete in, gives you someone to look up to or aspire to be better than. I kind of hate that people are so goddamn cocky now, driving the old heads(this isn’t an offensive term, means like Seasoned Vet, just in slang)away from tournament play. When I win, I just take it in stride and keep pushing. If I lose, figure out what I did wrong and keep pushing, but never let my confidence slip, even for a second. I’d really like to see some of the old legends play SF4 and possibly give out pointers and tips. Also, I’d just like to see if some of those old tactics still work today. Great read though, I had never even heard of Tomo or Jeff or any of the others mentioned besides Valle, Mike, and Daigo until now. If I do pursue playing SF at a tourny level, I can only hope to get THAT legendary.

i’d really like to see some of these videos that are now dead. can someone reupload?

I just finish reading through the whole entire thread. Good shit.

Great thread. I was about 10 at the height of Street Fighter 2’s popularity and I remember playing/watching the shit out of it at the local bowling alley and skating rink.

His true identity was revealed a long time ago, it’s Ken Williams

This thread needs to be archived or something. Trim the random comments and keep the amazing stories in a single article.

This brought me back.

I remember when SF2 was the rage. I would go down to the roller skating rink to play with everybody. There were always crowds and whenever somebody good would come, people would leave and go to the 7-11 that was down the street. It really was an amazing time to be a gamer because of the community, the skill progression, and the experience.
I now operate an arcade and I, to this day, have never felt energy as amazing as the old SF2 rush. This thread brought me back, and it rocks.

The 90’s OG’s of Street Fighter are like the Jordan, Bird, Magic, West etc , of competitive fighting gaming. Having Tomo at Evo would be like a symbol for all of us who came from that era. A symbol of not just how far the fighting game community has come and how close it is and a symbol of the big year fighting games are having in 09, but a reminder and a throwback to a wonderful era that I know we all miss: The arcade era. Where all you had was your skills, not a keyboard and a big mouth and where you had to back those skills up. The social experience and just the fun we all had reading about those great battles and watching them. That’s what the thrill and the memories are for us all. Having Tomo there at the Super Bowl or Wrestlemania of fighting game tournaments would be a pure reminder of what we miss as adults. I’m proud to say from reading these posts and the great players who post here, that I am proud to be apart of this community.

That’s my favorite thread at SRK. I read a few pages like 5 times already. And I’m always coming back here. A true gem!

Please sir Tomo, be there at Evo09 cross fingers =P
