Yeah…I come in here and the Vita thread mostly unable to contribute to the discussions at hand. I can’t be the only handheld guy that doesn’t give a fuck about RPGs.
@Vynce I played tons of RPGs as a kid but the final fantasy/chrono trigger style combat is just not that fun to me anymore. I do however, looooooove ARPGs like Dark Souls or Mass Effect.
Give me 3DS exclusive action games or at least action RPGs please. Speaking of which I am excited for MH4.
@Bious I’m not too far, taking a break from this game lol.
Mass effect isn’t an rpg. It’s a third person that happens to have a leveling system (which does nothing to te actual character. Just makes your guns pewpew better)
By definition all 3 ME games are RPGs, to be more specific they fall under the WRPG and ARPG subgenres. The RPG genre of video games originated from table top pen and paper RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons which are defined by the ability to influence a character’s development through numerical stat increases with the ultimate goal of making said character stronger than he/she was at the beginning of the game and defeat whatever the threat is. A leveling system which facilitates the ability of a character to see tangible growth within a game and take on enemies that he/she wouldn’t be able to take on without said growth is the core of any RPG regardless of whatever other genre the game may also fall under. If you actually played any ME game for 5 minutes you would see the leveling system is tied to the actual character otherwise no character would be able to levelup in the first place, and while making your guns pew pew better is indeed one of the options in all 3 games, once again if you played the game for 5 minutes you would see there are other options beyond just that.
Also while, there are many types of RPGs both linear and non linear AKA open world AKA sandbox, the original RPG pen and paper game heavily emphasized choices, letting the player direct the story and play out consequences, so in that respect ME is more true to the spirirt and intent of the RPG genre than any linear one like FF7 for example.
I know the history of RPG’s. Thanks.
I’ve played them as long as I can remember. Pen and paper along with MUDs.
When I play Mass Effect (and I’ve played all three. And beaten all three multiple times) I don’t feel like I’m playing an rpg at all. It just feels like I’m playing an action game that happens to have a skill tree and/or leveling system. Which adds little to nothing for me outside of “oh, my guns or armor can do cool stuff now.”. I don’t feel the “growth” as you would in an RPG. It’s just oh, I progressed and learned something new…sorta?
Your essay isn’t going to magically away my opinion.
I wasn’t stating any opinions, the ME games are RPG’s by definition, that is fact not up for debate unless you can change how the english vocabulary is currently accepted and understood. How you feel about the games is not the same as how the games actually function. You’re obviously entitled to have any opinion you want, I can have the opinion the sun is made of ice and the Atlantic ocean is made of fire, but my post was never intended to sway you, only to inform you that your opinion contradicts the facts.
That reminds me a side scrolling Mass Effect on 3DS would be awesome
I just remembered that Nintendo discontinued its Nintendo WFC service for DS and Wii a month ago
so I will be getting a 2DS in a couple of days
I bought Fire Emblem Awakening like a year ago and will be purchasing Mario Kart 7 when I buy a 2DS. Definitely gonna get that new Smash Bros. when it comes out as well.
Looks like I’m selling off my DSi XL and a few games along with it
I assume the 2DS is still region-locked like the 3DS and DSi?
@chadouken! Like I said the defining characteristic of any type of RPG is the ability to increase the player character’s stats, the Castlevanias are certainly RPGs simply because you can see the numerical changes in HP as you levelup. Correct me if I’m wrong, but none of that in the Metroid games right? Yes, Samus attains specific items in order to grow stronger, but that isn’t a requirement of the genre, merely just an element that happens to be in many, but not all RPGs.
No disrespect to s00percam, but calling Metroid an RPG is as silly as calling any Zelda game an RPG with the exception of Zelda 2. This is a well written breakdown of why the Zelda games are technically not RPGs, but simply have RPG elements:
LOL the mainstream establishment don’t care about those kinds of games.
You would be sending them to their deaths.
The 3DS is the last bastion of classic gaming genres like 2D action platformers and RPGs… Let the consoles keep wanking over graphics, guns, and zombies until the bubble bursts.
