NieR: Automata - Platinum's Take on all the Weirdness of NieR and Drakengard

Yeah I know I’m one of the only people that responded to your messages in that time, and I also got the JP version lol

Clocked 31 hours, got endings ABCDE and two of the joke endings. Just taking a short break until I try for a 100%.

This is my game of the year, it’s almost perfect to me.

I’ve stumbled upon Lana Rain, a “cosplayer” that did some “interesting” things with the character of 2B

Just google her

Post of the year

I need to ask a question relating to a sidequest.

Spoiler

I completed Emil’s memories. What’s the significance of the shack beneath the mall? The game expects me to feel a certain way about it but I have no idea what.

Just wait my nigga

Thought it was a tranny at first.

It’s the home of a main character in Nier

I think another quest has you going there but not sure

finished ending A last night…gonna go back and start knocking out these side quests now…

Now that I’ve 100% this game (mostly, didn’t 100% fishing – cause why would I!?), I can finally look in this thread again.

This game was amazing! I have never in my life been more satisfied with a video game purchase. It’s really rare, even for really good games, for a game to give me exactly what I was looking for at the time. I am so satisfied right now, even though I technically beat the game days ago, but only just now finished every tiny bit left there was (mostly farming shit). Yet another game crams itself into my top 3, may even be contesting for #1.

The story was great – I’ve been telling a co-worker the story each time I work with him, as he said he would never touch the game because it’s not his thing. You know a story is at least a bit compelling when someone who is only hearing some co-worker talk about it is intrigued and hooked on where it’s going. I’ve beaten it now, so he’ll get to hear the ending soon enough. It’s just so amusing to me, seeing his reactions. I think this is one of the few video games that has a story I could actually tell to someone and have them not be a bit bored or put off by it. Even great stories like the Legacy of Kain series are pretty hard to spin a yarn about, since they can be confusing. This game’s story is the right mix of puzzling but predictable. I was rarely confused about what was going on, and when I was, it didn’t take long for me to pick up some pieces and make my own hypothesis about what was going on.

This is the only game that I have read every single thing about it. Every side dialogue, every archive, each and every tiny bit of information I could get my hands on. I think I can count the number of books I’ve read even in the Witcher 3 (which I love) on one hand. Very impressive for a game to get me to care that much.

Figuring out whether or not I was even going to buy this game was almost as interesting as the game for me. I kept hearing this game’s name everywhere and I was just like “God, why are people so excited for a new IP? Usually people only buy the same shit.” Turns out, it’s not a new IP. I never heard of the first Nier, but after awhile of pushing from all of the people I knew, I decided to finally figure out just what the hell “Nier” was all about and checked the Wiki page on it. The moment I saw “Drakengard” on there, I immediately became a bit intrigued and also quite confused. “How does this game that is about some Androids in the future have ANYTHING in common with that really repetitive game with the dragon and fucked up flying babies I played a long time ago?” The moment I found out it was a spin-off based off of a joke ending, made me so enticed, I used those marvelous videos from Clemps to catch up on things. The dark fantasy and odd stories of all of the Drakengard games and the original Nier, it was all so interesting and bizarre.

The origin story of the Nier series as a whole seemed too interesting for me to pass up the chance. Glad I jumped on the Yoko Taro band-wagon.

So, just out of curiosity, how many people played the original Nier before this one? Because as someone who finished that game multiple times, I think there’s good and bad sides of going in with that knowledge.

Damn, here I am halfway through Horizon with Nier and Zelda still in the cellophane. My plan was to open Zelda first, after beating Horizon, but now I’m not so sure.

I need to pick up Nier, but I also need to break in Mahvel 3 on Steam…at least get to 8th lord, hop back on Overwatch, and finish Civilization VI demo.

I started route C

Spoiler

What the fuck happened? YoRHa got wrecked, 2B gets killed, start playing as A2, tower spawning from underground. Somehow the game treats this as the true beginning. Did I spend the last 40 or so hours on a prologue?

Spoiler

Nah, it’s not a prologue, but it is when a lot of major shit starts to go down.

I will argue that

THE TITLE CREDITS JUST APPEARED

(i agree but i thought it was funny)

That’s one of the “issues” with the game compared to the first Nier. It follows largely the same pacing and set-up when it comes to story, so I kind of got a feel for when the big moments were coming. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because a “predictable” flow to a story just means it follows a logical progression, but there certainly wasn’t as dramatic a shock as the library fight or learning about Project Gestalt in the original for me in Automata.

Though I will say that at the end, when they reveal [details=Spoiler]the 2E designation[/details] it was an “oh shit” moment.

I will say that it took pretty big balls for Taro to go the way he did with ending E, though. People have come to expect a certain type of conclusion from him, and that’s certainly not it. The justification for [details=Spoiler]deleting your save[/details] wasn’t as amazing due to breaking the fourth wall, even if it did help the theme of the ending.

All in all, a fantastic experience that was leaps and bounds beyond the original in every aspect but the characters and story, because the machines ended up kind of lacking and none of the characters really had the compelling and sympathetic stories of Kaine and Emil. It’s not that any of it is bad or even disappointing in Automata, but endings B and D in the original are up there in terms of fucking with the player and re-contextualizing events you’ve already seen.

Encase this was not shared before. if it was? … well fuck it

With what you have learned, you must now gain vengeance…for 2B. If it clanks, kill it. no survivors allowed.
