Don’t get caught up on “noob characters” and who’s supposedly beginner friendly. Every character can compete in this game and in the end you should just find whoever appeals to you most and work with them. Also, there are some undeniably good and useful moves/combos/setups for each chara, but rather than simply rely on someone else’s top 10 list, explore on your own. Granted, you’ll need to learn and understand the mechanics and system to truly know what the hell you are doing, but the game leaves plenty room for creativity so you can formulate your own style. Really focus on comprehending the basics first and the rest will fall into place.

thanks guys, im having a lot of fun with Tekken atm and I have decided on Kazuya and Lei. Regardless if they are hard to use or not im sticking with them. I have a question though. Is Kazuya like the Ryu of Tekken? And also do players like Kazuya and Jin get as much hate as Ryu and Ken do from their respective communities?
Kazuya is technically one of the “main” characters, but he is much more difficult to play than your usual “Ryu” archetype. Also, Kazuya and Jin players don’t usually get hate because they aren’t as commonly seen as Ryu/Ken/Akuma in SF or Ragna/Jin in BB. I think Lars, Alisa, Lili, and Bob get the most hate, but it’s mainly aesthetic hate (i.e. Lars/Alisa being too anime-inspired, etc.) and not gameplay-related.
I would recommend you not use Lei if you’re starting out, lol. Execution wise he’s OK, but you’ll be at a disadvantage unless you really understand the game.
Kazuya is cool but you’re going to have to practice the EWGF a lot, though if you can get it down, it will help your game a lot because your execution will carry over to other aspects of the game… the thing about Tekken is that your execution really has to be in tip-top shape, heres a cool video that might help you:
You will get hate for using Bob or someone really simple, everyone respect thats Jin and Kazama are really difficult at least execution wise
Good luck
Edit: If you really are deadset on learning Lei, make sure you get down all the moves for him, most characters are using 60-80 per cent of the move list, Lei needs pretty much the whole 100
alisa IMO is one of the easier characters for a beginner to pick up. i agree with what roninwarrior said. definitely practice movement and punishing with her if you’re going to use her tho.
he is very good but really has nothing that makes other “solid characters” any good. he cant punish. he cant launch punish most lows that others can or just simply hopkick. he takes a lot of knowing the game and knowing how ur opponent will and will not react. going through his flicker stance into ducking can get you hit unless you practice canceling as fast as possible. ALL of his lows suck and none do good damage, a blind monkey can see all his lows before they get to you. and the fast low (d+2,1,2 string) has its own ins and outs that make it risky (although its a decent move). all of them get launched also. he is designed to box and that is exactly what most be done with him in order to be affective. if you dont study frame data, you will be a scrub with him until you do hands down. just the fact that you will be attacking in out of frame areas means that you WILL die and deserve to die quickly. he is a CH character so just think of what learning frames can do for you. Tekken takes a lot more than any other game to learn other than maybe Virtua fighter.
steve and heihachi are my mains so playing both styles benefits me highly. but i can play everyone except 4 characters and compete in tourneys well. doesnt take long to learn ewgf. anyone can master it in about a week only working on it for an hour a day.
No, it’s f,N,d,df. The neutral is completely necessary so don’t forget it.
IMO the reason that Mishimas are hard to play isn’t just because of the motion, it’s because you need to be able to throw it out in any situation, be it punishment, pressure, or a scare tactic. That seperates the random mishima players from the great ones. So just keep that in mind.
Yes, true, you have to be able to do it in any situation, thats why the Mishimas are up there execution-wise.
I feel the execution is much stricter in Tekken then a lot of other games, and its a big barrier for getting into the game. But if you keep at it you can get past it
Regardless of everything thats been said, remember to have some fun with the game, Tekken is a very enjoyable game I feel, because despite the characters being different from another, you still have relatively more freedom to play them in your style then other games, this is something that a lot of players always mention as one of the best parts of the game
So… anyone wanna play some T6? I know the online is crappy, so I won’t judge you if you drop combos. The Tekken scene is dying over here and I’ll take all the comp I can get. Shoot me a friend request.
i think i’ll watch this thread. i’m in the same boat as many (coming from the SF world) and i thank everyone for giving tips on who to start off with (i might choose Alise, Bruce or Lili…even tho i may not main them in the future, just someone to get the hang of the game with).
since i’ll be starting with T6, are there any good Youtube vids that explain T6’s system/core (bounds, walls and whatnot in between)? thanks
Is Tekken a pad friendly series? Just started learning the stick for Capcom games (charge characters, always), and while I like it, I remember doing just fine on a pad with Tekken 2, but then gain, there weren’t many options at the time.
