Waves

Greetings. I’m a lowly newbie who recently kindled a love for fighters. It happened one night, about a month ago, when I found Street Fighter II: Champion Edition for Genesis in a pawn shop. I loved it, became a fighter fan, and never looked back. I used to be one of those scrubs who thought fighters were nothing but button-mashing, but I realized I was wrong and even wrote an article about it.

I have two questions. First off, what fighting games would you recommend for the following systems? And also, what Sticks would you recommend? (Keep in mind that I don’t have a lot of money, so high-priced goods and modded sticks are pretty much out of the question).

Sega Genesis (already own SF2CE as mentioned above)
Super Nintendo
Playstation 2 (already own MvC2, SF:AC, and DBZ Budokai)
Gamecube (already own Smash Bros. Melee)

For the PS2 and Gamecube, I own a pair of Pelican Real Arcade Universals, though unfortunately I’ve had problems with them (which I commented on when I saw someone else had a similar problem on the Hardware Technical Help section, in the topic “Help! My Pelican Real Arcade is acting up!”), I love the sticks though and want to get them working again, hopefully permenantly.

Thanks in advance.

SNES- Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting and Super Street Fighter 2. I heard the TMNT:Tournament Fighters game was good too. I’d say Killer Instinct too but haven’t played enough to comment. :B

PS2- Tekken Tag, Guilty Gear XX or XX#R, SC2, VF4:E (last one is a chore if you’re new, though)

Edit- whoops, saw that you had AC already. Removed 3s from list.

If you want to get an import, get Naruto:GNT3 and a freeloader for your GC, not a tourney serious fighter, but DAMN fun.

get Capcom VS SNK 2 for Gamecube. its the best fighting game ever IMO.

get it for the ps2 its the best port.

i thought the DC version was the best port

It is, but the guy doesn’t have a DC… PS2 is the best port after DC.

Am I the only one that finds the original post hard to believe?

I also recommend MvC2 for PS2, and try and get a copy of Street Fighter Alpha 3 as it is one of the best fighting games ever. Don’t forget Soul Calibur 2, the Gamecube version is the best.

Howso?

Anyway, I’ll hunt down all the games named so far.

Also, how is the King of Fighters series? I saw one installment for the PS2 that included two games of the series and seriously considered it, as I have little experience with anything SNK.

There’s also another 2 pack going to hit stores in a few months, and it’ll have two better games of the series in it, if you can wait for it.

The best KOFs are 2002, 98 and Neowave. Generally people consider 98 the best, but 2k2 is right behind it in overall popularity.

Myself I like 2k2 the best and NeoWave is new, but I REALLY like it.

You can emulate them on computer, I hate the dreamcast versions…98 is also for PSX.

Just suprised you would become a fighting game fan by playing an old version of SF on the genisis. An old version of SF wowing somebody in 2005 (or 2004) who has a PS2 and Gamecube seems rather hard to believe. I would imagine most people became a fighting game fan by playing against (a) friend(s), or playing at an arcade.

James- KOF 2002 is good. same goes for 98. But I suggest you avoid the Playstation ports of KOF games. The PS2 ones are alright, but by personal preference, I don’t really like KOFs 2000 and 2001.

Oh. I’m just weird like that ^__^.

I used to be one of those “All new games suck” guys, though I’m kinda growing out of that now thanks to my recent fixation on fighters. It’s simply that for some reason, older games always seem deeper to me (unless we’re talking about something that is almost undeniably complete and utter crap), like there’s more subtle naunces, whereas modern games (except for fighters) tend to seem more upfront and shallow to me. Granted, in a lot of cases that’s actually true (Final Fantasy X being one such instance :P) but many times I’m sure it’s just me.

Yes, on the subject on KOF PS2 packs, wait for the 2002/2003 pack. 2000/2001 aren’t that great.

I’ve been meaning to ask this for a while, and this seems like an appropriate place; what do you use to emulate recent(ish) arcade games like KOF2k2, seeing as they aren’t in MAME yet?

Do a search for MAME32More. It supports KOF 2002 and 2003.

Polarity, you can ask about emus and how to get them to work, just don’t ask where to get roms.
