Not a trick question. In the example you gave you mentioned AoF chars as a zoning/footsie/AA character. Ryo is from AoF. Not nitpicking, I just want to really get to the bottom of the question. And I specifically mentioned “smart” rolling, not predictable rolling.
So again, is the zoning/AA/footsie playstyle as evidenced by Ryu is SF not viable or does it even exist in a real form in this iteration of KOF?

I’m going to try to shed a bit of light on this without all the theoreticals. Yes, there is a strong zoning presence in KoF. Rolling isn’t the end-all, escape all move. As you can be zoned and baited to roll in order to eat a combo, grab, etc. Plus, charas usually have two speed projectiles so this switches things up. But you might as well just group zoning into the bigger category of spacing.
Ryo is a spacing character who’s a bit defensive, but excels close range too. That fireball doesn’t suck, it’s just not a traditional fireball. He uses that shit as an extension, to space. You can run into it, land on it, or even wake up on it. Good pushback on block, some version might even be frame advantage.Then, if you feel like you want to outspace him, he has to get back in, and can also use his kick special that covers ground quickly. Or…if he’s in close, he has standing low kick that starts combo, or can do command overhead into supers. Braindead hit-confirm. So dude has options. But…if you wanna just zone him all day, dude gets meter from countering fireballs, so go right ahead.
Some rounds, you might not even want to roll period, as some players whole game is to set up traps to bait and punish rolls. Then in an attempt to alleviate zoning or pressure, rolling backwards is just a stalemate, or it might just keep you safe longer, OR there’s certain situations where it might be preferred to backroll. Opponent still has option of anticipating and running up on your backroll, like a page out of Tekken’s book. Then guard-rolls and blowback counters are a whole other thing that can win, be baited, or punished.
All that shit just depends. Standard fighting game fare, just works out different than SF4. Imo, there is moreso an emphasis on spacing, footsies, and pressure. Just a solid combination of both. Put zoning under spacing in this game just to make it easier to understand. Is there anything like Sagat vs Honda or Sim vs Gief? Probably not as bad. But King vs Raiden is pretty shitty too.
If you guys want some kind of cheat sheet A or B type of deal, you’re not going to find it. Maybe a bit of rock, paper, scissors to be had, but game moves too fast for you to be deciphering every single context on the fly, everytime.

Only the worst players mindlessly throw fireballs without the idea that the opponent is going to roll through it or the next one. If I’m tossing fireballs from full-screen and someone rolls through one, I’m expecting another roll, so I adjust with fireball speed or strength, or bait another roll and punish accordingly. Of course, they could also be planning for a hop, which is something else I’ll have to consider if I’m using like Terry, Kyo, Iori, or anyone else with a ground projectile, but some fireballs (Kensou, Athena) can’t be hopped over and have to be jumped or super jumped over.
Yes, it exists. It’s just not in the same style as SF. Zoning is just space control, and space control in KoF also means adjusting for hops and rolls with a combination of properly spaced normals and fireballs. I’d actually lump zoning and footsies together in the same category since it’s all just controlling space (fireballs are just long-range footsies, really), but that’s probably just the old man Tekken player in me speaking. I’m probably totally wrong though, as I didn’t really “get” footsies until I met Cylus.
As for AA game, an AA poke in SF is generally considered the worst option (there are exceptions) as far as maximizing damage potential, especially when there’s the option to do something like SRK xx FADC xx Ultra. Most AA punishes outside of this scenario are done with specials, and is really just used to take the pace and decide whether to jump in, press forward, or continue zoning. However in KoF an AA poke (generally a st.B or a cr.C) is usually a very good idea and can lead to good damage because they can usually be hit confirmed into some type of long bnb juggle punish combo thingy. So in KoF an AA situation gets you really good damage in nearly any situation, as well as giving you the pace.
