New Tennessee Thread: Put the Ball in the Hole

Yep, my entire goal is just to try and play a couple characters that I never touched when it was in arcades. Pretty much I’ve just been playing using fundamentals. Trying to poke right, doing mini-combos etc. I also need to learn to aa parry I guess.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but random tangent. I vaguely remember Final Fight having a different title when it first came out. I was like 12, but I remember “Street Fighter '89” on a few random cabinets. Bear in mind this was in Asia.

If that’s correct, then it’s interesting how FF characters made it full circle back into the game series the original FF was supposed to be a part of: Street Fighter.

Final Fight was always Final Fight…someone probably but those on cabinets back then as bootlegs but they game has no other name

lol … I really hope you are trolling about him being a bad character, and if so, hi5 to you!

You coming down for Memphis tournament?

Hmm, looks like wiki is verifying my memory here, Dream. According to the entry, the original concept was as a sequel to the original SF, but changed when the genre changed to brawler from 1v1.

This was in the Philippines also, Jason. I remember we got all the bootleg versions of SF before they made official sequels in CE, NC and ST. I even recall the first SF1 cabinets actually having the title screen “Fighting Street”. So it’s not entirely impossible that the arcade operators got early releases or working prototypes before the actual JP release became official.

Hell, bootlegs and pirated shit is everywhere in that part of Asia, especially in the 80’s-90’s. I remember every PS1 console was sold pre-modded, for a substantial additional cost, and every “legit” store only had pirated versions of all PS1/Saturn etc games for sale. This was because the exchange rate was so bad, paying the actual dollar value of the original games was equivalent to a week or two’s worth of pay. Therefore the HK/Chinese pirates just cranked out mass-produced bootlegs that sold for the equivalent of $1.50.

I even bought a unfinished copy of resident evil 2 for PS1. It literally did not have the door to the next area coded in yet at the the Umbrella Lab. You played to that point and could go no further. I was pissed because I had to buy the “final” version of that bootleg like 3 months later.

Lol yeah, I gotta agree with Arson…I wouldn’t exactly call 3s a “man’s game” as how soon we all forget how people are laughing at SF4 players, well, 3s players were considered the “Sf4” players back in the day, so take that for what it is worth…any game that has such a reward for a parry; it’s really bizarre.

Now, the game does have higher degrees of footsies to a point, but the only REALLY good footsie character is Chun-Li and the problem is so many characters die to her in this game (same with Yun) so it creates a massive imbalance of gameplay and even more “guessing”…believe me, bad matchups in this game are NOT like SF4…they are way more magnified.

I also don’t think “hit confirming” is harder than anything in SF4 at all, which is why this game was so hated in the first place…it was played but not respected much at all. It took YEARS for this game to catch on…I had to BEG people to play this game when I lived in California. It took 5 years (around Daigo/Justin parry madness) for the game to finally start to gain some respect but I wouldn’t exactly say this game doesn’t have its own set of bs…for the most part the “top top” players at this game can’t play any other Street Fighter games (with the exception of the usual suspects, Valle/Choi/Justin/Ricky/Watson, etc)

I know the mind games in this are tough if you aren’t used to them; to me it’s “true Street Fighter” in that sense, and execution of moves is back to the way I am accustomed to, so I like that, but the “newbie” stuff added was the hit confirm system to make combos much easier…

I don’t think we really had any dedicated 3s players in the state, 10x was the only one who has taken the game seriously still, but I know spiralbottom/Gene/Majin (?) Eugene, Phil, Max, and a few others played the game sort of seriously but if you want to try and “troll” people in tournaments with little learning involved, just pick Chun-Li because for new players she is worse than Yun in SF4, lol

That Resident Evil 2 unfinished game got Gamefan magazine in a TON of trouble with Capcom back in the day…had to do with some Street FIghter guys letting it get copied believe it or not…

I don’t think anyone in the Philippines got early versions of those…Fighting Street is the Japanese name from what I understand for the original SF1…all those bootlegs were rampant; it’s the reason Hyper Fighting was made in the first place (counteract the Champion Edition bootlegs)

Bootlegs were rampant on everything right up until Dreamcast…something that also killed that system and PSP let’s not even go there, lol

Depends on how you use him…his air grab is unparryable, his crouch short is so fast you can do stand strong afterwards and it usually hits like a counter hit would…you basically have to just creep with him…if you use jab a lot, the dash super may be better for you…but stand strong, slaps, and moving forward are important. It is EASIER to parry with Hugo than with any other character so it won’t take as long to learn but I would recommend watching some Japanese Hugo videos…

But seriously make no mistake with Chun, you can teach someone to beat almost everyone here in 5 minutes with her just doing 3 moves…she is no joke

I played Hilde. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ok, so my memory is accurate on that RE2 bootleg.

On the other stuff, well Jason, unless you were hanging around the Quezon City SM City food court arcade in the late 1980’s, I’m going to stick to my recollection as being accurate. That was when I first really discovered FG’s and all that, so those memories stay with me. Street Fighter '89 and all that. I played Cody, and it blew my mind that Damnd’s name was curse word lol. Shit I was 12.

I feel old, I was in high school in 1989, LOLOL

Heh, I think I was a freshman when SF2 was out, I remember cutting class to go to the mall to play it on Fridays.

I was in fetus mode.

Bu nah Cody sucks, all he can do are tornadoes and kicks, ryu can fire a full speed fireball and chun li can spin her kicks for more momentum

I dont even have 3s…what for?

I was in 5th grade. I remember begging my mom for quarters so I could play…and get beasted by the cpu. That damn zangief at 7-11 in Newark, CA always had my number.

Just tatsu.

GGs Dream. Sorry that shit is so free. I swear its like we are playing diff games. Good practice though.

GGs Severin, sorry I had to jet, my wife just got here and we are going out soon…

That Gen stand Roundhouse into Super, is that if the second hit connects or just first?

Just first, the second hit causes them to reset rather than stay in juggle state. The super is a 0 frame grab so you can scoop them off the ground without issue. The only hard part to it is you have to let the second part of HK totally finish then do super. You will almost swear it will miss and then bam grabbed for a 407 dmg anti air. Works fine on trade as well, though if your really fast you can stance change into mantis super into ultra for like 600+ depending.

I had to jet after that game anyway. Going to see family with the wife.
