Hey guys, Temple film student and fighting game player (read: scrub) here,
I’m gonna be shooting (video) at University Pinball later this week - Wednesday and Thursday night. It would be a big help if people could come out, so I can show what an arcade looks like on a GOOD night; I tried to shoot last week without telling anybody, and the place was dead, sadly. I’m interested in showing how an arcade can create a community and start connections between players - too many people think an arcade is just a place to play games, with people staring at the cabs and not talking with one another.
Arcades are closing down everywhere (RIP Gameworks and my Jersey locales) and I wanted to show that even though games have mostly moved to consoles, the arcade is still important and fascinating. I’m shooting this for a class; it’s a 5 minute film, and I’m going to develop it for the final project (which will be 10 minutes.) I want to interview players, and film friendship and rivalry, sharing techniques, etc.
Please let me know if you’re interested, (you don’t have to do an interview or anything), but I’d like to be able to gauge what the response will be like, and which days, Wednesday, Thursday, or both. (24th & 25th of March; additional shooting dates aren’t set yet)
As I said, I’ll be filming more as the semester goes on, and with Kattermari’s permission I’d like to film at the Biweeklies, (or any big gathering people are having) to get some information about them on film - basically to show the differences between an organized console tournament vs. the open arcade atmosphere.
So please let me know what’s up, the arcade is a unique social concept, and it’s vanishing…but it’s not dead yet, right?

Just to clarify: I’m not really gonna direct anybody, this is more observational, so you can just play whatever you feel like. No need to play a certain way or talk a certain way, I’m sure I’ll get great stuff from everyone.
If you want to throw variety in there and play some crazy shit on the MAME cab, (like if you want a shot of JoJo’s or Breakers Revenge) or one of the lesser-played cabs in the mix, just let me know if you want me to film that. I get pretty nasty when playing Money Puzzle Exchanger. If you don’t know what that is…you. must. learn.
I’ll probably be putting it on YouTube, unless I fuck up and it turns out really horribly, which I hope doesn’t happen…but even if that is the case, I’m sure I can edit together random stuff people want to see (e.g. themselves on camera).
Really glad people are responding positively to this, and yeah Zack for the longer version, I’ll probably film at one of the gatherings (biweeklies seem to be the biggest?). I’ll let you know a bit in advance.
