know your stings and your opponent’s actions on wake-up after hard knock down. you can actually condition them, control them pretty much imo. usually what i’ll do is if i land a combo on one side of the screen and end it with a palm, while they’re on their getting up animation i’ll throw a meaty lp hadouken from across the screen and dash hk demon flip kick (or grab depending on the mixup i want) or ex flip kick or grab depending on the situation for more pressure or whatever.
Either walk up on them to Meaty them or jump in on them. Those 2 options set the table for everything.
Meaties net you free throws, lp kongos to catch cr techs, counter hits… And you just block to bait the reversal.
Jumping in on them nets the same thing except you start it from the jump in.
The hardest part about learning to rush down with Gouken is mastering that small jump in window… It’s hard, but it means the world if you want to be more offensive than defensive.
Start with the safe jump thread and work from there.
Awesome guys. I play on PC and would love a practice partner SunSun. I’m pretty terrible right now, though I am getting more comfortable every day. I’ve been playing between 2-6 hours per day spending most of the time in training trying to get things figured out. I haven’t played online yet, just against AI on medium (I know, facing AI isn’t worth much). I read half of the footsie bible yesterday and saw my play level increase dramatically just from thinking about what I am doing, and avoiding jumping in for no reason (I’m trying to teach myself to stay grounded and dash). Thanks for the advice guys, it has given me a lot to chew on.
GFWL is Cypher354 and I live in the North American West (SF Bay Area).
Lol oh yeah wstch me and iam for wakeup safejump and divekick expertise we all look forward to your growth and dedication, success and challenges alike. Dek climax sun and many others and selves included look forward to servin up the whoopins in endless!
Thanks really happy to find some good support for this character. One thing that really impresses me is how extensive the Gouken subforum is compared to a lot of others, even though he’s not super commonly played. Lots of really good information here.
Gaku may have clips and gootecks may have his asian-ness…but we are the deepest and own the most original tech and have the best slept on gmen out there… 2013 is ours…if its not in here it doesnt exist or hasnt made public yet
Yeah theres a crazy deep knowledge base here and Gouken is as deep as you can get in a SF character. The cool thing is we have people really really dedicated to this game and him and we all learn from one another. I feel like even a mediocre Gouken knows more about their character then any of the top level other guys and their’s. Its because Gouken is a struggle LOL. Its like we’re all brothers in war haha. He’s a struggle but once things start coming together its awesome.
Got any more questions, just ask and SOMEONE will answer…
That’s something I’ve noticed. The forums for other characters you can ask a question five times and nobody has time to answer it, or even direct you to a place where it might be answered already. You always feel like you’re bothering everybody. On the Gouken forums though, every question I have asked has received a prompt and helpful answer.
I played some matches last night online. I didn’t win any, though I did face a couple 1500 BP players that I managed to take rounds off of and a couple of those matches I would have won if i hadn’t gotten close and panicked and forgot how to play the game lol it was comical. I had these moments of brilliance where I was making all the right decisions, playing reasonable footsies, getting basic combos off, had half health, and one more hit to go for the win and I was just like “OMG HIT BUTTONS MAYBE I CAN WIN”. 1500 bp were the lowest rated players I was able to find as well, couldn’t find any other noobs like me… so it maybe be a long time before I am able to start winning often enough to rock more than 0bp which is fine with me. I also play the board game Go, where they always say that you should expect to lose your first 100 matches when you start. Losing is learning, as they say.
The good news is I have loads of fun on Gouken and I can sense the depth and power of the character, even though I can’t quite tap into it because this is the first fighting game I have taken seriously in about 12 years. I’ve completely lost what skill I had so I am starting from the beginning. There is so much to learn at this point I have trouble figuring out what my focus should be. Learning bread and butter combos (I don’t even know which ones to start with except the one Takinflight suggested)? Should I just focus on learning the footsies game by playing online matches and wait on the combos?
The good news is that I have noticed actually improvement in my combo game, even pulling off a few basics in my matches last night (the best one is that I pulled off s.hp>ex.Palm>super even though I didn’t have my opponent cornered. I hadn’t even tried that one in training mode.)
tl:dr I am making slow progress toward understanding the character and coming to better understand myself as a player, my strengths and weaknesses.
Now I just have to stay committed and not get frustrated and quit. I’ve been gaming for so long, I expect to pick up games super fast and be good at the automatically but fighting games are quite a different story… too many years spent playing herp-a-derp MMOs and shooters.
EDIT: Is there a good resource I can use to read up on Gouken’s most useful basic combos et cetera? In this forum I only see the movesets and attributes thread which is great, but doesn’t really include evaluations of useful combos. Maybe I am missing something?
My bad lol, it was regular palm into super… apologies /nub. ex into super would be pretty amazing though right?
Good news is, I spent some time working on the Meaty dj mk>clmp>sweep combo today and though the timing on the sweep is tricky, I’ve gotten to the point where I can perform the combo maybe 25% of the time… just 75% more to go.
The timing for cl.s.mp > sweep is the same as cl.s.mp > cr.hp, but it’s easier to practice the cr.hp over and over again by putting your super meter on infinite, putting the dummy in the corner and doing cl.s.mp > cr.hp x lp.fireball fadc cl.s.mp > cr.hp x lp.fireball fadc repeat repeat repeat
practice that combo over and over until you can’t not get it.
Then you’ll have the timing down for the link to sweep, and you’ll have learned a very valuable fadc combo.
cl.s.mp > cr.hp x lp.fireball fadc cr.hp x ex.palm to dash sweep or dash tatsu or palm to corner U2 or 5 hit U2 or dash cr.mp x flip mixup or whatever else you can think up and pull off.
That is one hell of a damned intimidating combo for somebody that has trouble with just the basic stuff. However, after thinking about it for a little bit, it seems to be made up of smaller interactions that are important to playing Gouken anyway, so it makes sense to start learning some of those interactions step by step and then string it together eventually after however many months it takes me to get it down. I will be honest, FADC combos intimidate the hell out of me, but I guess I’ll have to put on my big boy pants eventually if I want to suck less at this game… not learning things that are intimidating only serves to hold back my progression. Just gotta swallow my pride and start trying to make it happen.
