New Goukens: Ask a question get an answer

Is “GooKen” a bad pick for the vortex whores cause of his lack of wakeup options?

I guess you can say that, but characters with dps are suspect to vortex set ups too.

Gouken struggles moreso against characters who can spam safely with armor break, or just flat out rush down… as he can vortex them in almost the same fashion.

His wakeup is what it is… It’s better than a lot of characters… The lack of a offensive reversal is really the sore thumb, bc you have to deal with poking and grabbing differently than everyone else.

Yeah, I just can’t get around his wakeup game. I find it kind of awkward. I sometimes just do the usual ex counter mash, but only once whether it hits or not, cause then it becomes predictable. I actually need to face a Gouken also who is good at dealing with pressure (for experience), the ones I’ve faced online don’t really know what to do, I end up forcing them to use counter and I just throw.

He does good against Guile which is so annoying for Bison. Kinda gets eaten alive by Cammy/Yun/Yang/Ibuki/Akuma/Viper though? If I play him, I wanna use him outside of just 1 matchup.

Well you can remove Ibuki from your list because we can kongo her Kunai’s. Kongo is the greatest thing in this matchup because we dont have to guess front or crossup like everyone in the cast does. Teleporters cant even get out of her vortex because she can easily OS.

All in all you just need to learn to defend. I played Akuma before Gouken and was spoiled with a DP and a teleport…my defense was just garbage man. Picked up Gouken and would get hella frustrated because people would start reading kongo and blow me up for it. I simply just stopped using it, buckled down, took about 2 weeks and just defended in training and in endless online until I learned.

His wakeup game isnt the best but eventually you get good at predicting whats coming your way. Just stick to teching roughly 70% of the time and mixing up backdash/exflip/and kongo the other 30% and your opponent wont really be able to abuse the lack of wakeup we do have.

SN: I’m an ok Gouken imo, if you wanna run some just for some sparring I’m on both PSN and XBL.

Oh nice. She’s meant to be in Bison’s favor (I’ve been told), but I just can’t deal with a really aggressive one. I’ve never learned to play with a dp really, or block a lot against most characters since I use Bison, pretty much only when I have no meter since teleport is an easy OS most of the time. When I was trying Ken, I always told “Your Ken is really good, but you NEVER dp!”. I think Gouken may be a good secondary for me. At one point I was thinking of running Akuma/Gouken like you, and Hakan for troll/rage reactions (ironically these 3 are who Infiltration uses lol). He has really good normals too, and hard hitting.

I was looking at this guide:

Sure, I have AE on both consoles too. I gotta renew my XBL today actually.

Yeah, Blacktooths guide is highly recommended for those starting out. The guide is well put together and even had a few things in there I didnt know myself at the time. I’ll be on tonight so I’ll add ya and we can run some. I’m SkyAkuma on XBL. Shoot me your GT whenever you get a chance.

Oh and I dont play Akuma anymore. I play a little reckless and dont mind taking hits but Akuma sure does. Plus although Akuma’s walk speed is the fastest in the game, Gouken “moves” faster if that makes any sense. Faster dash, faster normals and hits WAY harder on top of that. He’s like a bodybuilding ninja or some shit lol

‘ok’ my arse lol you blow me up constantly on the rare occasions I’ve played you so if your ‘ok’ then I must be really bad lol

Haha no no man, you’re a great player. It’s just critiquing myself I feel I need alot of practice and consider myself “ok” because of it.

Started messing around with Gouken, would like to know some more about his combos. Is there a combo thread? The only combo I figured out is his usual mp>cr.hp into something. Is there anything else besides that? I dunno if there’s a 2012 combo thread or anything…

Also how do his counters work. I know they changed it in ae where punches are like low/mid/high counters? What does the ex one do?
I’m assuming use hp for jumping attacks and lp for lows. mp for ???

I don’t think theres a thread. Thats his BnB hit confirm. Some of his others are:

  • cl.MK>lp palm/tatsu. you can also do a st.lp and link it to the mk but its a 1 frame link
  • cr.lk>lp palm
  • cl.mp>cr.lp>lp palm
  • cl.mp>sweep
he has FADC, reset and corner ones too

lp counters low (like knees and below), mp counters mid (above knees to shoulders), hp counters high (above shoulders)

Can Gouken’s Super Combo be safe jumped (I’m especially wondering about Akuma)?

Can Gouken’s Super Combo be safe jumped (I’m especially wondering about Akuma)?

The super is 3 frames startup so it can’t be safe jumped

I know backthrow has different properties but it doesn’t matter what throw you use to tech right?

So Gouken is a pretty fun character to play. Just wondering what are his frametrap/blockstring options? I see that I can do cr.lp into cr.lk but it doesn’t cancel into anything when I try to? Also his command dive is pretty weak imo, mainly due to the lack of comboability options from it. What can I do after a command dive hits combo wise other than just jab like crazy?

Nope! Not when teching

Well our go to frame traps are cr.lp x1 or 2, cr.hp. From there you can lp hado, fadc into more damage. I could go into a trillion more but that one is the bnb of them all. Yeah, our command dive kick is pretty weak with the hitstun. Its like that though because its an overhead. The only way to really combo off it is if you make it a safe jump. Other than that we use it more to change our trajectory in the air. After a knockdown you can diagonal jump over your opponent as if you’re going to crossup mk, command dive kick and catch them in their recovery of whatever they pushed (most opponents throw in block stun). So you can land and backthrow to Ultra, land and cr.hp into combo…theres a ton of things depending on what your opponent pressed. Another, since it does have such poor hitstun is to command dive kick and immediately ex flip for bait. When people see you do it they know it has poor hitstun so they’ll most likely try to throw or reversal. Use this on all grapplers and Seth. Because most grapplers are tall even if you hit them they can still SPD you and will if they see it. If they reversal the ex flip will be invincible and you can punish accordingly. Hope this helped.

Just adding to Dek: You can follow command divekick with cl.st.mk > lp.palm but you need to hit the divekick chest height or lower, especially tall characters. A hit in the foot can combo into sweep.

Interesting…so ex flip is invincible to shoryukens if you do it right away off command dive? Also I’m not sure if this is possible, but if you combo into cr.lk with jabs or something, you can’t cancel the cr.lk into hadoken?
Also lp counter is hilarious after a blockstring, especially if you have a super and they are crouch teching. Enjoy the free 400 dmg.

No, Gouken cannot link more than one light attack into a special since his light combos are chained.

  1. Yes, character specific. I forgot the list but I think it whiffs on Guile, Sim, DeeJay and a few others. If I’m not sure, I hp.palm. Palm gives you time to apply wake up pressure anyway.

2) Yes, although the timing is pretty tight and it is character specific also. It’s listed on one of the threads, maybe someone can remember which one. My dum dum hands can’t do it reliably going toward the player two side. Double qcf to the right after a dash makes my hands stupid. I get a whiffed palm (or flip if I’m using U2) or jump into the air half the time. A good character to test if things can work believe it or not is Gouken.
