New Capcom Development Strategy

Well I ran out of fucks to give Capcom and any other fighting game maker that feels that they can just release a fighting game and we will buy because it’s a fighting game. There is no way I would’ve spent $59.99 worth of quarters on any of these fighting games that have come out recently if they were in the arcade.

Someone let me know when they go back to depth and quality instead of focusing on simplicity and accessibility.

Did you read their financial statement?

Their goal here is to produce games on a shorter cycle for the singular goal of higher, steadier profits. Nothing about reducing bureaucracy, nothing about smaller teams being more creative.

50% more games in the next 10 years. 2.5 years between major titles per IP, sustained DLC between releases, multiple sequels developed in parallel. They also specifically state that this shorter cycle reduces the impact of fuckups and poor sales.

From a cash flow perspective, this makes sense. Instead of banking on a big hit or two per year, you spread it out. From a creative/development standpoint, the bean counters have taken over it’s going to be CHURN CHURN CHURN to meet deadlines and put product on shelves.

Does it mean Capcom is doomed and FG’s are dead? I doubt it. Of course lots of people want to cry that the sky is falling, even though realistically we have to wait and see. But when accounting and quarterly earnings start taking precedence over PM’s and producers, the result is rarely an improvement in product quality.

Nothing worse than illiterate motherfuckers trying to correct me. And I quote:

Stick to the Dudley forums. It seems that all the stress from playing a boxer has left you with phantom brain trauma which renders you useless at intellectual pursuits.

I like that they’re using smaller development teams.

I’m kind of neutral on the fact that they’re going to try and make in-house development teams because there’s no guarantee that they’ll be as good as the talent they threw away.

I really don’t like that they’re basically going to be rushing everything to the shelf.

I also really don’t like that they’re relying on DLC
