What’s wrong with that? I do it all the time, and I still do. Hi guys, my name is Anthony, and I’d like to be your buddy! O_O
You won’t get an answer from fubarduck for awhile, he’s in japan for SBO.
Ah shit! Not the surprise sex again!
But yeah this arcade seems like it’s going to be the shit wherever it’s going to be located.
I think this will be the last time I post in this thread…
I’m sure you thought about this, or at least you should have, “do we really need an arcade?” After that I’d be inclined to ask you if you wrote up a business plan and then if you come up with a decent revenue model. Judging from this thread it seems you haven’t. To be honest I find this thread pointless. I see what your trying to do; create an arcade that’s geared towards the community. If this happens, I’m down to attend and support. But this thread should have been created once the ball has began to roll, this is all very premature. You’re basically asking the community help you create a revenue model… Really? Which is way as a naysayer, I’m not inclined to give detailed reasons on why this “arcade” wouldn’t work, and how it would. You’re basically having other people do the leg work for you.
/end rant. :wonder:
Good luck!
It’s 4AM, but a quick response for n3ss.
Why is that a bad thing that he’s asking the community for some help to create a good solid business model? Which people in the community have actually stepped up and actually made things happen? And the people who have attempted this before, have they proceeded in making things work? No one has really opened up their own arcade here in NorCal for the community… we’re usually playing at Gofland with shitty management support and things of that sort. EVEN if this project doesn’t proceed, I don’t see why premature discussion is pointless, especially when it’s a discussion involving the attempt of having THE new spot to play at which isn’t private or exclusive.
I don’t see anything wrong with helping someone’s business model if it’s HIS money at work in an attempt to do positive things for the community. His money on the line is THE biggest risk of all. If that isn’t dedication into the community, I don’t know what is. We should return that dedication with our own willingness or unwillingness to participate in this discussion, not condemn him for asking the community for advice. One of the other things that we’ve talked about is that this project is FOR the community, BY the community. This isn’t just a random project to make Myung additional income, but the reality is… if you’re going to open an arcade, you need to be in the positive. So with that said, I’d like to thank everyone for their constructive advice and criticism in order to take the necessary steps to increase the chances of this project to be something that can be something really special to NorCal.
And I’ll vouch that he’s not having other people do the leg work for him. I can guarantee that myself.
Why are we up?
Hahaha. Seriously, not trying to be negative (I love playing devils advocate)… But even before talk of an arcade, what should be discussed is what type of business can sustain an arcade, cause an arcade won’t last at ALL. We all know that. So first and foremost that’s what should be talked about in here, not how to run a community arcade, cause you gotta lay the foundation before you build the roof. Once thats decided, then you take the next step. At this point I fell this thread is not needed, in terms of actually arcade talk, cause there is not even a revenue model. if he wants to go the food route, awesome. Go do the leg work for it and come back after you figured out how to make money and be able to keep this thing running.
And there is many issues of asking an open forum to create you business plan which we can discuss in person some time… Actually we need to hang some time period… So you can kick my ass in sf4 :lovin:
As for this topic being pointless. Maybe that was stretch. But it still begs the question, “do we really need an arcade?” We need a gathering for sure. But at this point I really feel an arcade is not the answer. But if its his money thats besides the point. If we’re talking community at this point in time, until he has a solid way of making this happen we should focus on other things. like getting something weekly going. We lost that and we need it back, especially to continue to get better.
Regardless, like I said before, I hope this happens. Shit we all miss having a arcade to go to, especially if this one is catered towards us. Like someone earlier posted, he’s attempting to create the “mecca” of arcades in Nor Cal. Fuck I hope it happens. It’s the “but” the current way its being executed that worries me.
I think he’s asking for input because people may be able to shed light on whatever he may need more information about. He probably had a few ideas for a business model, but why charge into it without having other people check your proverbial work? For example, people like Pieguy and dantron were able to provide some very solid firsthand insight with numbers and info regarding what games would pull in money and why. Now, I know that specific bit of info was regarding the arcade bit (what you said was the “roof” of this project - and I agree), but it’s worth considering. Had Myung not asked, he would not have gotten this information.
The more information he has, the better he can build that “foundation.” I’m sure he’s already had plans, but again - why not obtain more info before you act?
Anyway, I think you’re right - let’s steer it in that direction. Revenue models - anyone who has some experience with this sort of deal, please speak! Especially if you’re in the area where Myung’s thinking about doing this.
n3ss: Relax. No need to come in here and say “oh we shouldn’t do the ‘leg work’ because you should have planned this out already.” He’s asking us for feedback because he’s opening (or theoretically would be opening) this arcade for players like us. And, if we want to drop in extra ideas about how to make extra revenue, that’s on us. It wasn’t demanded or anything. Plus, us giving ideas makes the arcade (possibly) even better for us, as we may see our own ideas become reality.
There is a very, very good reason to ask for feedback BEFORE you take any kind of definite action. If this thread got no feedback whatsoever, he would already have his answer. The point of him starting this thread was to gauge interest before any further considerations.
The topic is not pointless; those of us that don’t live in the San Jose or San Francisco (and south of Davis too, I suppose) areas would absolutely love  to see an arcade open up somewhere closer (aka further north of those areas).
Anyway. Myung, crunch those numbers and if it looks good, get it done. I think you already know you’ll have support from us here.
I agree… And like I said, I love playing devils advocate, someone has too. Its been attempted by several people to try to do what he’s attempting, and honestly no one has been able to come up with a solid revenue plan. What he’s trying to create has to be more than an “arcade” or it won’t work. But we can check his work, he hasn’t shared his business plan. And honestly I don’t expect him to. I wouldn’t, unless you an investor. Also, did he really need to post a thread to get the info he’s obtained? I just think a little more leg work should have been done before this thread was created… Why? Because if everything started to get going, this place would at least take 6 months to a year to open.
And I know he doesn’t want alcohol, but it would bring in money. You could have a designated area for it or something. Cause doing anything with food requires more BS. Actually, you know what might work, is making some bomb ass vietnamese sandwhiches, haha. Sorry, its late and I’m hunrgy
Ah, I think I see your point a bit clearer. I suppose it’s sort of akin to saying “What kind of yacht should we buy, honey? I just can’t decide!” to your wife when both of you are barely making ends meet as it is o_o. Sorry, I have strange analogies, but it makes sense to me o___o. Yes, perhaps he should’ve done more leg work, BUT - check the thread title! It’s an interest check after all, even if he is discussing stuff he probably should’ve had squared away. Nevertheless, I’m sure he’s doing the research required for such a huge endeavor anyway - this thread is probably just a supplement. But you’re right - while it’s a stretch to say the thread’s pointless, I see where you’re coming from.
People just love Vietnamese sandwiches… people order them all the time at the 916 tourney o_o. Are they really that good? I’ll have to try one someday…
Dude, love the analogy. Kinda like, “Hey honey, lets buy a house. And lets talk about how to make it our dream house.” We’re missing that stuff in the middle of how to get there. And I think that should have been addressed before creating this thread, that is all.
And dude, you need to go get a vietnamese sandwich, BOMB.
**Protip: Having a hot vietnamese girl make is even better. LOL
Open a Starbucks in it and you already solved money and attraction issues. lawl.
Damn 5 pages already and 5-6am replies. Think about the pages of text if this thing goes live and implements all the awesome ideas so far + golden material not brought up yet.
Has it been mentioned how large the location you are looking at been discussed. Most arcades are pretty compact unless it’s Scandia or Golf Land. BIRTHDAY PARTY plans? DOG what about LASER TAG? JK Laser tag died 10 years ago =(
Just for the sake of clarifying by iteration, we really want you to succeed, and my own personal advice is to at least have an Excel spreadsheet with all the known constants and variables. I am going as far as to tell you that doing so is mandatory before even considering proceeding. The variables are, of course, mainly the amount of guesstimated customers?and how much each person buys, be it measured in cash or in the amount of food, beverage, etc.?where you can create some scenarios depending on different criteria of success; at any rate, you need to find an estimated amount of customers necessary to gain a desired?minimum?revenue.
You already have a lot of the constants like the price for the arcade machines, the rent, furniture, etc., where you still have to decide what to price beverages and the like.
Discovering that the budgets don?t balance after you invest all your hard-earned money is not the proper chronology in a project of this magnitude.
We don?t know what your exact approach to the project is, but we want to make sure that you take all the necessary steps and precautions.
I suddenly want to play Theme Park again ?
N3ss asked if we NEEDED an arcade, and I believe the answer is a resounding ‘yes’. Think about it not from an economoic standpoint, but from a ‘would it benefit the community?’ standpoint. At least, that’s where I’m coming from and that’s what will get me to sign up for membership and keep me a patron of our dream establishment.
Here are just a few reasons as to why it’s ‘needed’:
-out Internet is third world compared to japan, and no one takes online play seriously. Those who do soon realize their skills are barely up to snuff with arcade goers. You learn bad habits, lose winnable matches and eek out wins due to lag, all of which add to the development of thought processes that are either inherently wrong or misguided (jab dp’s are safe because lag won’t let opponent punish…bam, now it’s a habit).
-as stated earlier, a place to commune and exchange ideas that’s all our own. SRK works, but Internet discussion is sometimes like winning at the special olympics, even when you win, you’re still retarded. In other words, the ethugs and trolls sidetrack what would potentially be a fruitful thread and it could potentially degrade into a flame war. In person, people are cool, and thus ideas flow freely. Think modern day acropolis (geeky but true).
-the venue would be larger than most houses, making it available to have more skill congragate from different areas. Instead of playing the same folks due to habit and routine, you’re literally getting ‘a new warrior has entered the ring!’ every night.
-I hate to keep comparing the US to Japan (but let’s face it, we’re trying to catch those folks) but if anythig, those guys don’t need another arcade…but that doesn’t stop them…and because of it, we can’t stop them.
So yeah, we don’t ‘need’ an arcade in terms of another place to take our money, but we do need one in terms of a place to meet, learn and improve, and that’s worth the investment.
I think n3ss really hit the nail on the head.
The direction of this thread went in the wrong direction. If I was starting a business of this magnitude I would not be trying to figure out the arcade details first and wasting time/resources. Instead be figuring out how the hell will I make revenue. Which has me worried about how this is being approach. Most people will argue that the success of a business is not based on the “innovative” idea but how it is executed.
Plus he never really needed to post this thread to get this information. Instead aim it towards market research for creating a revenue model for the arcade. Getting ahead of ourselves here…
You guys know my stance on not sharing technical/strategical information to the public, but I definitely don’t disapprove of withholding information in order to give yourself a competitive edge. That’s just the nature of every competitive field out there (physical and mental), so I don’t condemn it, I just don’t like being that type of person.
<3 Sosage
I rather prefer to let everyone know what I’m going to do and how I think. Now it’s just a matter of can you stop it? And if I’m figured out, how do I take it to the next level?
I love the constant challenge for growth, knowledge, and to improvise and create solutions
Whoops, sidetracked!
Edit/Random thought: I’m sitting here at work, and I started laughing cuz I was thinking of the amount of people who play SF4 who also play DOTA/HoN. It’d be funny to run a dota tournament series one day. Idk if that would ever fly, but that’d be kinda fun, funny, and entertaining. I know you Fresno fucks are reading this, especially you Hoonyo! Also to Davis cats who love HoN/Dota!! Don’t hurt me for this dumb idea <33
dont listen to ness.
you ask “do we need a arcade”
i say “shut up the fuck up yes we do.”
you negative nancy.
j/k i love you all.
I just realized that with the “bonus” tokens at SVGL. SF4 games come to about $0.50 a game. Not bad. I got 2 and a half hours of ass whooping for about $10 last night.
DOTA tournaments @ the new arcade. Believe it!
