I know about the two plates and what the blue one is for but i went though 3 LS-32’s and all of them felt rough around the corners not so much “soften” and sometime that messes up my DP motion.
Learn to use everything; it’ll prevent you from ever being completely helpless.
When my (stock) T5 stick started acting up (I fixed it recently) I used a friend’s American (Happ? Comp? I dunno) and another’s Sanwa at times and became acclimated to both fairly well.
One had a circle the other had square. I bought an Octo a few weeks ago and I just bought an LS-32, and a number of other things.
I don’t know how I would but I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on a Wico stick.
stops rambling
On this topic, I always played on circular gates, full circle gates with no sides or corners. I’m pretty sure they used these gates in an arcade that I used to play in cause it always felt like a full circle

Does the GTY (second link) pose a problem? I don’t understand why it would affect charge characters more if you still have a corner for DB and DF position. I’ve never played on an 8 way gate so I’m not sure how it’ll turn up but I have so much trouble doing fireballs with a square gate that I just can’t play well. I struggle…
Does anyone who has transitioned from circular to octagon know if they can still play as good?
'holy crap…I don’t know much about sticks but the Japanese square gate sticks are tough for me for DP rotations, as well as parrying, and there are things which are basic for me on U.S. sticks that I can barely do (or not at all) on the square gates…at least…not on the 2p side. A friend of mine just told me that JP players using the square gates try mostly just moving their fingers, and not their wrists/forearms, as opposed to typical U.S. sticks, and I’d NEVER heard it described that way. I trade in my U.S. stick skills ANY day cos the U.S. seems to be phasing out their own sticks in favor of SBO and such…
A square gate has walls on the left and right side. Certainly when you start using a square gate the left wall will make you jump or crouch if you wanted to simply go left. The right wall will make you jump forward or crouch forward if you just wanted to walk forward. Only when you’ve played using a square gate for quite a while, you will know where exactly to go without accidentally jumping or crouching. When you’re not 100% used to the square gate, you will lose a lot of matches because of unintended directions. An octogonal gate has the directions defined but the downside is that it has no less than 8 (!!) dead spots. For example, between down-forward and back, that part of the gate hits back, making you do an unintended movement. When you hit the dead spot between down and down-back, your character will crouch but make you think he’s blocking while he’s not. An octogonal gate will give you a lot of trouble because of the dead spots, especially in the beginning. Both the square gate and octogonal gate have advantages and huge disadvantages. It’s not that one gate is better than another.
I just got a new stick and I was wanting it to be more like an ‘American’ arcade stick. That’s not to say I don’t like the sanwa parts, I’m having an issue with the square gate. I know with some practice I could used to it, but i would prefer what my old arcade (doesn’t exist anymore…poor diversions) has. I believe it was a circle gate, not sure. Do any of you guys know which gates your arcades prefer?
I got a Hori fighting stick with a square gate because it was recommended by many. Lost a lot of matches more than when I used a gamepad.
Played Marvel vs Capcom 2 on an arcade with an octagon gate for years & always ended getting the top score each day.
The bottom line is, use/get the one you feel at ease to use like some suggested. This is one of those thing where it’s either you like it or you hate it.
Twinkle: I think that’s more an issue with the actual stick itself. The Hori FightingStick isn’t very good, even compared to those huge Pelicans. The stick itself feels weird and the buttons are like marshmallows. So yeah, I could see why you’d have a problem with square gates if you’re gonna base them on that. haha
As for American stick parts, I enjoyed 360s. I’ve been playing on both American and Japanese cabs for years so I’ve gotten used to both, but I found myself having to jerk my wrist less when playing on 360s than switch sticks. There are some people that’ll say that they’re not good because of the diagonals, but I didn’t have much trouble.
