National Novel Writing Month Thread: We're Smarter, More Artistic, and Lazier Than You

I never make the deadline, but I have to admit that I do get more writing done than I do on my other non-projects. I just aim to increase my writing habits. Whiiiich are pretty bad lately.

Like last time, I did a novel about betrayal and having to run from security forces in China.

This time I’ve had an idea for distopian society somewhat akin to Demolition Man, but less action based and more dramatic.

I think this time my story wil feature fucking ghosts.

Really.

Oh, and also computer cyber security.

So I’ve been telling myself to work on an anthology action project (starting by writing something everyday), but I never knew how to start it. It bothers me as a writer that I tend to linger to one genre, though I’ve taken a shot of romance.

By the way, does anyone have a Wattpad? A friend of mine told me to make one, but I never got around to (I still can’t even think of a username).

This is the first time I even knew that Wattpad wasn’t a piece of hardware. LOL

I’m checking it out now.

(“Rise from your grave.”)

A day late and more than a few dollars short @Manx, but it’s here now if anyone (else) needs it, especially since I’d rather not make a new one.

Thanks, lookin out for you writely peeps.

(Good to have you at least presumably on board.)

So, in giving it some thought and having a bit of inspiration and remembrance while on my exercise just about an hour ago, I think I’ve decided what I want to do. I had to wait until I came back and check Google to see if it had been done and, surprisingly it hasn’t, so I think I’m going to try do to that particular story even though it started in my mind as complete joke just based off a name. It helps that unlikely almost every other story I idea I have, it can and should be stand-alone.

So I’m good to go here now and will definitely be trying to do it this year, especially since I got to 50,000 words pretty easily the last time times I actually tried. Any particular inspirations for anyone else?

@“the damned” Rise not raise.

Object raises another object. Versus: Object rises.

I wish I had time to write. I remember my life in excruciating detail, and sometimes I wish I could do an autobiography. But too bad the category is novel. I’ve had some interesting science fiction plots but I always forget to put it on paper.

(I know. Still, I missed that typo, so thanks; it’s fixed now.)

If anything, then having less time to write actually makes it easily arguably since having a bunch of free time just means you probably won’t get around to doing it at all (or anything else).

points to self

Provided you started from day 1, you’d “only” need to type about 1,700~ words per day to hit at least 50,000 words. Up to you and whoever else wants to join though, especially since it’s not like you need to finish. You either do or you don’t like one of the three times I didn’t and was relatively “happier” than the first time I “finished”.

(Bumping this even though I hate double posting.)

As of about five minutes ago, I finally finished my prologue at only 3,566 words despite working on it off and on all day, which is extremely disappointing since I’ve been able to put out 10,000~+ words in less time. Then again, given how much I was allowing myself to get distracted, I suppose that I should be surprised I got that many words down at all even as long as it took and even as relatively late as I’m starting this. Either way, I didn’t think that I’d end up starting things off by having the seeming protagonist literally fall off a cliff. Oops.

Any headway for anyone else? @Manx?

Awesome, Damned. You’re not doing too bad.

I on the other hand am only like 700 words in. Meh. But I’ve planned my story completely, so words. I wasted so much time this weekend thinking I’d be free today, but I’ve got to go take care of some stuff, so the 5 hours I though I’d have turned into 2. Oh, well make the best of it.

(Bumpity bump.)

Any progress, @Manx or anyone else? I’m behind myself, unfortunately. Only at 11,302 words after finally getting done with Chapter 2 just yesterday despite starting it about ten days ago. It ended up being rather longer than I intended, in part because there was way more dialogue and I introduced more mostly minor characters at once than I intended to. Whoops.

I wonder if I can get through Chapter 3 today even though I still wouldn’t be focusing on the protagonist again yet, which is perhaps odd even though she was last seen falling to her death off a cliff into a river.

Barely written. At this rate I’ll be glad to get over 10k.

(makes horrible noises that confirm some semblance of life or at least non-death)

Ugh. I’m finally done with Chapter 3 and I’m somehow already over 21,500 words even though I’m not even back to the main character yet, though I’d like to think that will change next chapter. I doubt I’m going to finish either at this rate, though that’s hardly surprising since the only time I’ve been able to finish is when I’ve purposely skipped over the stuff that usually holds me up–agonizing about being realistic about dialogue, circumstance, and logistical detail where I can–that I swore I wouldn’t put off this time. You should really do that instead of getting hang up on details in the first draft like me. As long as you don’t totally Dan Brown–yes, his name is a cursed verb now–things, it should probably be fine, especially since there’s always revision, which you also shouldn’t be doing right now yet I still do.

Sigh. I wonder if I’ll ever be able to come close to staying anywhere near 50,000 words for any book I start for this contest.

Anyway, any luck, @Manx (or anyone else)?

LOL How is Dan Brown used as a verb?

You’re doing awesome. I haven’t been able to touch my record of 35k words. Once I get my boxes packed today I wanna sit down and get my count up over 10k. That’s like 5k words though. Hopefully next year I will be more settled and able to dedicate time to this.

(I’ve been trying to post in here only when I’ve actually written something since I hate double posting, but since I didn’t get anything done yesterday and likely won’t today, I figure I’ll answer this now so as to not leave you hanging.)

I’m sure you can get to 10k if you have the time. Unlike me, you’re actually busy with a bunch of constructive and necessary things, so the fact that you got to 5k as it is between spending time with your kids and dealing with court bullshit is no small feat.

As for “Dan Brown as a verb”, for full details, I’ll link to the appropriate TVTropes page: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DanBrowned. Given the source is TVTropes though and I can understand not wanting to go there for various reasons, I’ll just quote the relevant part:

Granted, I wouldn’t be claiming that since I haven’t done the research on top of it being a re-imagining of a fairy tale ala Gregory Maguire in the first place, but it still feels like the more I write about things I don’t actually know about in a time period I thought I knew at least decently well for someone not an expert in it. “The devil is in the details” and all that. Part of the reason I’ve been writing so slowly is because I’ve been trying to research various minutiae, including realistic names, which is something you’re not “supposed to” do either since you won’t get anywhere in the time limit–that is unfortunately true, at least for me this year.

(Oh hey, the search function is actually functional.)

Rise from your grave for another month and never be responded to by anyone but Manx or I!

The Good: As a week ago, I have had an idea for yet another novel that I think I could actually get finished unlike the last one.
The Bad: The last novel from last year still isn’t past Chapter 4 and I still haven’t done nearly as much research on the subject as I have wanted to, which was my “reason” for stopping.
The Ugly: Due to laptop issues last (ugh) December, Chapter 4 of said novel was deleted, though I remember at least what I had written still for the most part since I think I only got half-way through what I had intended for it; I have just been too lazy to re-write it. What else is new.

The Unrelated: Sigh. Still have not finished Worm despite stopping it for NaNoWriMo last year despite being, I think, almost done with it or at least over a million words in. I did actually read and finish all of Chapter 25 on Saturday night even though that was novel length by itself. Something that happened towards the end of Chapter 25 signaled that it might be best to take a small break before continuing though.
