Not in NYC it isn’t. You need at least $120k in NYC to get by, that’s probably about $40k in the rest of the country. $160k is finally where you can start pulling ahead.
But then if you have student loans, you’re talking another huge chunk. And taxes are extremely punitive if you’re single and make over around $70k. Add Obamacare in the mix and you’re losing even more money.
And rcaido is also right. I don’t know that many men that have good jobs. Out of all the male friends I have, I believe only two clear $100k. The vast majority of men I know are struggling and their wives have the better jobs. I usually avoid family law, but it’s the same in divorces and with other family lawyers in the region, they’ve all mentioned women have more assets and higher incomes than men, it seems to be the norm.
If you can get away with having no debt, and can choose where you live, then the income amounts do make more sense. Let’s say I’m making $100k off interest from my trust fund, and have zero debt whatsoever, in that case I could move to a lower COL area. But most of us have to work for our money, and use debt to finance education or housing. Only the high COL areas then pay us decent incomes, so it’s a matter of working through that.
If I had the choice? I would never have gone into debt for schooling and would take a $70k job somewhere cheap. But that’s not a real choice for most.
That’s because you’re in NYC. I’m seeing a lot of men being replaced by women and blacks. I’m talking about 100k+ positions. I’m seeing women getting positions which they have no knowledge of and men are usually the ones that have to implement the stupidity and then repair the damages after the women shortly realize their terrible decisions before making further ignorant decisions. Also, women get A LOT more paid time off than men and still demand more than men in the same position, even though the men pull way more hours and have to cover for the women. Right now, NYC is a great place to be if you’re a women. Plus if you’re half decent looking you can make over 100k easily selling your body, I know mad chicks from Columbia and NYU that did this to easily afford the education.
I’ll probably move out of NYC in a year or two once some of my businesses pick up. Cost of living in NYC is too high and it’s too anti-business.
That’s most liberal states, dude. Punish success and subsidize bad ideas, and everything will eventually work itself out…until you run out of money to throw at everything except the solutions to the problem.
It’s funny because many other people that are from JYC say the same thing. this girl I know was complaining about how effeminate the men were. This woman was in banking and she made 130-160k before she got canned from her job. What I don’t get is how salaries are so high when there is so much labor floating around. I suppose the salaries have to stay high due to cost of living.
Well it’s only handed out to a few. Either those that are connected or those that these social plans favor, i.e. blacks and women. This is what you get in a liberal policy economy. 6 years of blaming Bush while spending mindlessly, taxing those that do work and throwing merit completely out of the window. It just doesn’t work, but the media is liberal and young people are extremely stupid.
Everyone that doesn’t fall into that boat will have to struggle by with less or get government benefits of some sort. 51% get some sort of government aid now right? But hey, it’s probably still Bush’s fault.
I know people in New York who make roughly $110-130K (I wish it were me but I only pull in a small fraction of that ) and live comfortably. Nice studio apartment in the middle of Chelsea that $3K+ a month. No real debt. One has a checking account that’s so overwrought with money he’s never checked the balance. The only time he knew what the account contained was after he lost his debit card and went to get a new one. The teller said to him, “Uh, do you know how much you have in your account?” “No. I never had the thought of checking it. There’s just always money in there” “Hm. It’s a lot. You should really take it out and invest it.” "I’ll think about it.
That’s just one story. I know others in that category who are saddled with student loan debt, property debt, business cost debt, family debt, etc. Living in the same area but barely getting by.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that people live differently, and they shouldn’t have to live the way you think is appropriate. The problem with having someone else determine what you “should live on” is that those with less will ALWAYS complain about the ones who have more than they do without wondering why. It’s an envy thing and everyone is too prideful to admit that’s why they think those with more should have less. Those people who make $100-200K aren’t the ones causing huge problems in the economy, but they sure as fuck are blamed for it along with the ultra millionaires.
As for me, I’d probably live okay on $100K a year. I wouldn’t doubt that after the government takes half of it and leaves me with only $50K I’d be boned hard as fuck as I’m trying to pay for my luxury apartment that I should be able to afford.
This is very anecdotal. You have any numbers to back it up? I guess women are finally getting jobs in New York, and yes a lot of them have really good jobs, but better than men? How do you define better? More money? I’m pretty sure the highest paying professions in New York are still dominated by men with the exception of possibly Editorial.
