Who are you? Never heard of you. Plus, learn how to spell, ahem, “accomidate.” Wait, you’re from Reno, NV…that says it all.
My awful evo experience, going to the front desk at GVR to check in and being asked if my card had an addtional $150.00 for a deposit Thankfully I had ONE credit card that wasn’t maxed
:pleased: The whole ordeal took like 30 minutes.
Another awful experience was the extremely hot Vegas weather. Dang how could people live in that type of heat
I didn’t like the single game elimation for 3S
It was really really annoying
I know we were short on time, but paying $10 for like 4 matches was bad…
I also didn’t like how it was SOOO random, the brackets.
I wasn’t even supposed to play the 2nd round elims on Saturday, but all of a sudden (right when I stepped into the room from a short break) they were announcing “All players in Losers Bracket must proceed to the left side of the room within 5 minutes, or are disqualified!”
That was harsh.
WEll for every problem, there lies an oppurtunity to take the time and fix it for next year. So hopefully they’ll work on the brackets. Like perhaps require a idea of where you live during registration or some comments like that to help organize the brackets.
While impossible to impilement you could only have online registration and no one site registration at all so you could get the brackets done weeks in advance. But one can hope.
why does the bracket have to be totally random? why not seed the online applicants according to their reputations/past tournament performances and create varied pools for them, and for all the people who dont sign up online; they get shoved in random pools at the last minute. that would encourage online apps and get things going smoother?
I’d have to say the biggest problem was the seeding. Regionally, it was fine, as far as I could tell. Problems arise with a TOTALLY randomly generated seeding, though. Like having Choi and Mago in the same pool…granted, one U.S., one Japan, but shouldn’t a match of that level be played in a semi instead of a qualifying pool? Furthermore, shouldn’t a match between two obvious powerhouses from different countries be 2 out of 3 instead of one game? Things like that should be checked after random seeding.
I’ve heard countless instances where friends had to play friends in quals and in first round of semis. Buktooth, IKEA Eric, and myself all hail from SVGL…and we were all in the same pool for qualifying…
I think next year, if possible, there should be some sort of online voting for seeds, not only by region, but by national rank too. Everything ultimately left up to SRK staff, but the community will get an opportunity to voice their opinions about who should be seeded and why. This might alleviate some of the problems of this year’s Evo, and hopefully keep the hype up instead of dampening it.
I think that this kind of input from the players around the country and the rest of the world, in conjunction with online registration could allow for more reasonable pooling, and online brackets like one week before. A lot of people registered online, from what they tell me, and while the international players may not be able to confirm payment of registration, they have to confirm their plane tickets…that should be enough to consider them confirmed entrants.
The CVS team tournament managed to get all of it’s entrants paid for weeks before Evo, and the bracket was posted a week in advance. While on a much larger scale, this type of organization may be possible for the main tournaments.
Aside from the seeding, holding it in Vegas was a grand idea on paper, but from my experience, it wasn’t worth the extra mileage. Partying on the strip would be easy, GVR wasn’t that far away, I got there in like 15 minutes. The problem is that we’re supposed to wake up to get there at 9 am, so partying isn’t as appealing if you care about your mental performance in the tournaments. Plus, the rounds last so long, and you can’t leave without risking getting DQed. So, we get out every night after 10, and all the buffets and restaurants are closed. To get something decent to eat, we have to go to the strip, which on a Friday or Saturday night is no easy task. Then, after grubbing at like 1 am, we have to get back to sleep so we can actually play. It’s a sacrifice either way to have fun or be prepared. Like having it in Vegas is a tease, 'cause you don’t really have time to party and play games, it’s one or the other…or just don’t sleep…which ultimately affects the reason that we even have Evolution every year.
Bleh. That’s my opinion in a sleep deprived state. Rip away.
this is kofiend.
i think there should of been a BYOC area open at all times the tourny was going on, 1~2 stations for each game, since theres no arcades.
there were lil shits here and there but overall a good tourny, when will you get to play all those different guys again? good shit > the bad shit
Agreed
This is all very good input, guys. Believe me, we are gonna do everything possible to alleviate these problems. Again, I’m really sorry that some people had to play friends in Pools or semis, but an apology and encouragement that next year will be better is all I can offer for now.
As for having it in Vegas be a bad idea: at Pomona last year, we couldn’t get ANY food after 3 or 4 on the weekends. It was a pain in the ass. Vegas is a great place to hold the tournament, and hopefully next year you’ll have more time to head to the strip. It was never the intention of having you go to the strip DURING the tournament, but after or before, since tourneys last so long. However, we are already looking towards next year to see what we can do and hopefully, there will be more opportunities for players to visit the Strip during the tournament next year.

I was pretty dissapointed overall with evo. This was my first year, so maby I was expecting too much, but even so.
First of all, everything started at least 2 hours late. Every day. I don’t care why it happened, it still sucked. This could have been at least partially releaved by one simple thing; mail out the nametags before the tournament to all the pre-registered people. Sure, registration will be a couple dollars more, but that massive line that took up 90+ minutes will be gone.
Second, why was there only one station for casual 3S on day 2 when 3S was the biggest tournament? (seriously, there was 1 S3 machine going and 4 CvS2.) Don’t get me wrong, these other games are awsome, but it seems like you;d try to make the ratio of machines to players as close to eachother as possible.
Third, just DQ people. Announce pools like 10 minutes early, if people don’t show, DQ them and move on instead of waiting 30 minutes plus for them to show up, or at least do all the other matches for the pool, and if they are still not there DQ them. That would have helped the time problem too.
Fourth, 1 game is the biggest piece of BS I have ever heard of. Especially when it continued into the first round of Semi-Finals. I know why they did it, but it was their own fault, not the players who were late’s fault like they tried to say.
5th, The inconsistancies in following tournament rules were way too common. I was watching a friend play his 3S matches and he was told to do 1 game while 2 stations to either side were still doing 2 of 3. Same thing happened at the begining of Semi-Finals, they told the first batch of people to do 2 of 3, then changed their minds.
Lastly, why the hell was their a halo tournament to begin with? evo is a fighting game tournament, not a 3rd-person shooter tournament. (although this was worth it to hear them booed down)
Overall, I’d have to say that ACEN, an anime convention, was better run than this. I understand that their were equipment problems, and thats understandable, but still not an excuse. Hell, worst come to worse they could have pulled some of the casual stations just get extra matches running. I’m confident people would have understood that the tournaments running smoothly comes first.
don’t get too worked up old man, where the hell were you at evo anyways, i was going to challenge you to a drunken r4 sagat match
A 90 minute wait isn’t that bad, especially when Acen this year had a 2-5 hour wait for onsite registration (I was there so don’t even try to deny that).
Also Halo2 slightly took over the Acen video game room too so don’t deny that either.
yeah, 1 round for 3s was uncalled for, so much random stuff can happen and tekken being 2 rounds instead of 3 was uncalled for too. i was pissed, but i felt even worse for the people who traveled like thousands of miles, but please try to make it happen next evo. also, after random pools, maybe you should go through and handpick the well known names to go to other pools, then there would be only one clear powerhouse per pool instead of 2.
also, could byoc be open later, say like till 3 in the morn or something? that would allow for EVERYONE to play each other, it would have been pretty sick, just a suggestion
GVR if you didn’t have a car was pretty far from the strip, i know that for me and a lot of people, if you had it right on the strip say at a hotel like ballys or whatever much more people would have enjoyed the experience as we could have just explored the strip in between pools.
overall evo is always going to be cool, just cause you can meet hella cool new people, and i hope next year evo can happen again
EDIT: oh yeah and i think srk should organize their shit and keep a tighter lock on that shit cause people stealing shit is hella fucked up. i wish there wern’t such dicks in the fighting game community like people booing halo and stealing shit, but alas there are, so please take account for the fuckers at evo and find some sort of really tightwad system
Just so you all know, one of the reasons why we had to rush some of those tournaments is cause of time constraints. If any of you wanna drop down like 5 grand to keep the event opened up long enough for those 3 out 5 matches or what not, please step up…
Mandatory Cellphone with TXT Messages solves most of it IMO.
No TXT Message capability then no entry.
NEXT YEAR IS GONNA BE AWESOME
(I couldnt make it this year:( )
First, I’d like to apologize for even bringing up the whole “scrub” thing… going to EVO is about trying your best, regardless of skill. You have to play to win, and I know it sucks ass that you had to play your friends so much. I guess I was just upset that after having such a great time myself, someone was trying to “talk down” how good it was. For that, I apologize.
Shirts; I’m one of the best GGXX #Reload players in America, along with the rest of Reno. That right there says it all is right. I also don’t really care if I misspell an obscure word, so nya. >P
Look, Chickenman, we try our best to make everyone happy. And we’ve already had some people posting and bitching about being DQ’ed. You’re asking us to DQ people to alleviate problems, and then complain we have only 1 game. What about the people we DQ? They have now played ZERO games. And that makes for even a MORE shitty trip than being forced to play 1 out of 1. I was running that 3rd Strike bracket, and it kills me everytime I have to DQ someone.
As for the 3rd Strike bracket on how many games, we had over 128 people for the semi’s bracket. If you’ve run tournaments before, you know that over 128 makes a really ugly number of people to have a good bracket. So an initial group of people were drawn out randomly to play for their spot in the bracket to narrow it down to exactly 128 people. Because these people got unlucky and have to play one extra match to get into the semis, they were given 2 out of 3, so the FIRST FEW MATCHES of 3rd Strike semis were 2 out of 3. Once we got the 128 established, we moved to loser’s bracket being only 1 game for the first round. I initially told everyone that it was all of loser’s bracket, but I was mistaken and THAT I apologize for: 100% my fault. Afterwards, I cleared it up to as many people as I could. A couple of guys even came by and said they played 1 out of 1 in the second round, and I apologized, and told them to go finish their matches out much later than when they initially played. I let them play their next 2 games.
In other words, I did my best to compromise in every situation, and when people came up to me to ask about problems or inconsistencies, I TRIED TO FIX IT. PLEASE next time (if you decide to come again), if you run into that sort of situation where your friend plays best of 1 and everyone else plays best of 3, COME UP TO ME AND ASK ME ABOUT IT. Don’t yell about it in the Forums after the weekend is over. I like to think I’m a nice guy, many people say I’m a little TOO accomodating to people. I hate DQing people, sorry. Because getting DQ’ed sucks more than 1 out of 1 games.
And ABOUT that 1 out of 1 games. So do you think all players and tournaments in Japan are BS? If it is as random as you say, how are the same people in Japan winning over and over and over and over and over again? Japan tournaments ONLY HAVE single elimination, 1 out of 1 game tournaments. Without allowing character changes. SBO is ran that way, ALL tournaments are run that way there. To the Japanese, it is ODD that we have best of 3 matches. There is NOTHING BS about having 1 out of 1. Do you think the NCAA Basketball March Madness is BS? That’s best of 1 game as well. Come on!
But I guess my biggest complaint is that you tell us we are asses for doing things like switching to best of 1 game, and then say we aren’t asses enough to DQ people right away. In other words, you want us to be asses or not asses depending on how it benefits YOU, not how it benefits everyone. Sorry, but we simply cannot bend to the whims of individuals in this situation.
And I’m glad you think that equipment failure is a BS reason for tournament delays. Next year, if you want to bring 20 back up PlayStation 2’s for us to HAVE, feel free. Then you can PERSONALLY ensure we have no more excuse. And that 90 minute line you stood in this year? Fucking-A, that was an improvement. People stood in line for EIGHT HOURS last year to get their badges. Tell those people that 90 minutes was too long and I’ll videotape their reaction 'cause it’ll be priceless. Mailing out badges and stuff is a good idea, we’ll look into it, but my God, can we be constructive here without trying to imply that we don’t have our shit together?
And sorry if I sound really angry right now, but after 4 days in a row of 3-4 hours of sleep (WHICH INCLUDES NO PARTYING OR HANGING OUT AT ALL… 100% working), I come home and read this and I just don’t know how to react.

The announcer…guy on the mike…was gay.
gay gay gay gay gay.
Probably because MLG paid for the venue, and since they run Halo and Smash Bros, that would be why those games were there.
As for the booing, that was ridiculous and stupid. Why are fighting games, tournaments, and the scene dying? Because there are too many idiots out there that believe fighting games are the only genre that deserves to have competitions. Over the past 6-7 years, how many companies have actively come out and sponsored Street Fighter tournaments besides passing out T-shirts and small promotional items?
MLG sponsors Halo 2, Smash Bros, and Tekken 5 tournaments. If people want events like Evolution and the other major tournaments to stay alive or improve and become even better events, then we’re gonna need sponsors that are willing to work with us. Hardly anybody went to the Namco sponsored Championships earlier this year, and people were booing the main game of Evo’s big sponsor MLG. Way to go everybody, way to show what a class act you all are.
Street Fighter is NOT the only game ever made, it is also NOT the most important. The games played in the tournament are almost all at least 5 years old with the exception of Guilty Gear XX #Reload and Tekken 5. Do you honestly believe that the scene can keep going without any help? If you really want events like Evolution to get better and continue to be around year after year, ya’ll need to get off your pedestals and realize that you are NOT the only video game competitors out there. I’m not going to speak for the Evo staff, but MLG helped us big time for Texas Showdown 5. We need the sponsors to help us out, its the same for most events that want to grow and continue going.
