I’m wondering…certanly it isn’t because newer fighting games came out and most people just got tired of playing the same game for 10 years. Shit talking has been part of Marvel since day one. So please, enlighten us all with your theory as to why Marvel fell off.

I’ve somewhat lurked in this thread for a while. I’ve noticed that a lot of the MVC2 community tends to come off as a bunch of jealous frat boys that look down on anyone that enjoys MVC3. That’s not just this thread, but on GameFAQS as well. While you manage to keep it contained in here (with a couple of exceptions), a lot of you tend to have this mentality that anyone that enjoys Marvel 3 is a baby or a scrub, and they aren’t ready for “big boy” Marvel (which is pretty childish). Seeing posts like those tends to ward off new players that may very well be curious about this so-called mythical creature that you all speak of. (Granted, I know some new players still jump in, so no need to go there.) Then you have the aforementioned bickering over an ONLINE CASUAL MATCH, of all things. Are you guys just that bored from mostly facing each other?
Please be advised, I’m not trying to start anything. I’m legitimately curious as to why a lot of you (Especially VDO…my goodness) come off that way.
^ Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Speaking for myself, I enjoy mvc2 because it is a more skilled game in every aspect than mvc3 or SF4. No comeback factors, more execution required, just generally you get rewarded for putting in the work, and if you don’t see that then you probably did not participate in mvc2 in its prime.
You fuck up in a match, you die for it via double snap or getting resetted to death. You wanna make a comeback? You better step your shit up, no XF that kills 3 characters in 10 game seconds. No stupid ass deaths midscreen of an “option select” jumping f+hp. Sure pressing f+hp in every situation is an option select. Mvc3 is a retarded game point blank, it rewards dumbass-ness lol and patches up the casual gamers weaknesses.
TL;DR…mvc2 = competitive marvel , mvc3 = casual marvel
Attitudes like this are a prime example of what I was referring to.
Now, add that in with the fact that the only people that really still play Marvel 2 are the ones that were supposedly playing during its prime, and you have your answer as to why MVC2 basically fell off. While I agree that XF3 is a bit much, and I’m glad it’s being toned down in Ultimate, it still doesn’t take away your ability to block, avoid, or fight back. I just doesn’t make the match a completely unwinnable one, which is what the majority of MVC2 is like now, unless you play at the highest level.

Mvc2 died because like everything else in life, it ran its course. 10 yrs is a long time and ppl expected it to die, mvc3 did not kill mvc2 in case you were thinking that.
And also, if you want to play mvc2 at a casual level then fine go do it, dont blame us if your request is unreasonable since you’re trying to hop on a bandwagon that you missed about 8 yrs ago. I agree the mvc3 is being shoved down our throats because Capcom wanted to reap the benefits of making a scrub-friendly game. It will NEVER be as great as mvc2.

A lot of them aren’t ready for “big boy” marvel. I’m not trying to say they suck but it takes more time to learn, and when a lot of the people still playing know what they’re doing it gets really hard to learn in matches where you just get beasted and are left saying “what just happened?”. I don’t know about other people but that’s how I learned and damn it did take a lot longer to learn and you really had to dedicate yourself compared to marvel 3.
I wasn’t aware some of the other parts of the community thought of the marvel 2 community as “frat boys”. It’s true that we may look down on mvc3 compared to 3, but some of us still play it(I was at evo for it). Do I think of it as “baby marvel?” yes I do, but that’s because of how much more effort you need in mvc2 to kill characters, or have a comeback. When just about every character can use 2 assists in one combo and kill a character off of the easiest hitconfirms ever, half of it is a spectator sport because you’re watching yourself get juggled in a 30 second combo.Xfactor makes that game more scrub friendly because of how much better your character can become after you get your ass handed to you.
I didn’t think VDO was even one of the people you were referring to. Only met him once but he seems like a cool guy.
It’s not really being shoved down your throats, though. And of course the game won’t be like MVC2. (Whether it’s great or not is an entirely different discussion.) It’s meant to be its own game. Capcom couldn’t recreate MVC2 if they tried. People didn’t wait 10 years to play another MVC2.
I see your point, but I was asking because this particular “old school” community seems to be one of the most hostile. The 3rd Strike players aren’t even as bad. The VS players seem to be tight-knit, but cool. The Super Turbo community…ok, they might be on par with the MVC2 community. And I mentioned VDO because he almost always has a post deriding or mocking MVC3. But thank you for your non-flaming response.
