Wait, so we’re banning Doom’s unblockable but not Sentinel’s? Why? Repeat trips aren’t going to happen against a straight up jump (which has zero frame startup, thus why I use it as a first attack glitch defense), and you can’t combo it into anything unless you’re bringing an assist that hits OTG that you can combo into a launcher. Take that against Sentinel, who has numerous ways to 100% combo most characters other than himself against which there are no counter-options other than praying they screw up or playing a character with armor.

Yabuki style: it’s timing. I believe it works because of the same glitch that causes the sentinal unblockable.
Just to clarify, the trip glitch and sentinal unblockable have never been banned and never will be…right?

It’s a “normal” unblockable just like Sentinel’s. Like Sentinel’s there’s some very particular timing to it. A particular spot near the tip of Doom’s foot must be the first thing that hits as he swings his leg around at a very particular range, the whole leg doesn’t do it. If that’s the first thing that hits an opponent, it’s an unblockable. If you chain into it, it won’t work. If you hit them at any other point on the sweep other than that spot at the tip of his foot towards the end of his swing, it won’t work. If you hit it at the right distance and time, it will.
If you can manage to get an OTG combo assist like Commando or Tron, you can combo it into a launcher and do it into the usual bread and butter air combo into photon array or Doom’s infinite if you can pull that off. Otherwise, all you can really do is try to repeat it, but the timing is so particular and the way to avoid it so easy (jump straight up – literally zero frame startup, so there is zero margin for error) that quite frankly I think that a human is not capable of doing it often enough under tournament conditions that it’s going to be a problem. If you really want to build a tournament team around Doom/Commando praying for an unblockable and take all of the other weaknesses around that team, or stick Doom in the back of your other teams in hopes that you can get repeated unblockables in the endgame when you have no other recourse… well, hell, be my guest.

Word? Normal jump has no startup? I don’t think so. I got hit all the time just tryin to jump. S.J. has no start up I think. And Doom’s trip thing isn’t just at the end of his foot. Jesse the man who hustles 17 women at a time hit me two or three times point blank. I might agree with YabukiStyle on it being random also. I’ve never seen it done more than three times. If it’s just timing I’d think people could do it just like any other timing thing right? Anyways Drew and I are going to try and be there. Um, Rat used to do the Doom unblockable all the time with Commando assist during the Team Seattle (for those who are uneducated, Team Seattle=Cable/Doom/Commando) days. It’s funny this thread reached two pages because of Doom alone.
You don’t think so, eh? Well, I’m afraid you’re simply wrong. There are one-frame transitions between different movement states, yes. For instance, if you’re crouching, and you want to jump, there is a frame where you have to stand before you leave the ground. If you want to jump back from a standing position, you will have a frame of a standing block before you leave the ground there as well.
However, there is no such transition frame between standing and jumping straight up. If your stick is up, and you were standing before, you leave the ground immediately. Meaning, yes, if you are up against a first attack glitched Magnus doing a low short, and you start the game by holding the stick straight up, their low short is not going to hit you. You’re on your own for what else they might do while you’re in the air, but the low short, glitched or otherwise, will whiff 100% of the time.
If I recall correctly, when I tested it, it was at a particular spot right about where his sprite’s heel is or thereabouts. Other points on the leg are blockable, this part isn’t. I may be foggy on just what part of the leg and foot it is, but I do know that the window’s pretty damn small. And yeah, it’s not at the tiptoe of his foot, it’s a very slight bit inward.
On another note: I just now asked Phongsack over IM whether his intent was to ban or allow the Doom unblockable. His answer was, in as many words, “to ban it”. Answers that pretty succinctly.

Oh that makes more sense now that you say you have to be standing first. No start up time meant to me, that you could continuosly normal jump and they couldn’t hit you low when you hit the ground. Or if you were crouching long enough not to cause a superjump, that you could immediately leave the ground for a normal jump.
