I will go as far as to say that studio monitors are overrated. We live in an age where guys are releasing songs on cheap headphones. I used broken mosquito speakers with success, but let me tell you it was a drag to produce on them, you have to do ear training for that and know your speakers really well and compare the color of your speakers to standard sound systems in your head as you produce. You will hear spikes in your mix where you think you should EQ, but it’s just an illusion by your crap speakers. I produce on AKG K240 studio, very flat and responsive. I switch between my headphones and my broken mosquito speakers so I can hear if there is any phasing which is one of the cons of exclusively producing on headphones, and I just don’t feel right producing in mono.

And yes, I work on computer exclusively. No external hardware whatsoever it is not required at all.But different synths have different growls, and one toy I want is a Virus-Ti and a Roland SH-201. You can hear the Roland SH-201 on Timbaland songs and many of the songs out today. It’s thin, but has pressence in the mix, something which I like.

By the way I prefer email because i’ve already had too many instances of people here never checking their inboxes after 1 or 2 messages, and never replying back in the process. It’s pretty annoying when you make your email hidden from users.

Madden:RobotBMX2K9 you seem to know your stuff pretty well too, do you currently have a job in a studio though? If so how’d you get there? Any tips on studio job hunting are very welcome.

Studio monitors aren’t overrated. People just don’t know why they need them or what they’re supposed to be listening for. Knowing your system is important as well, and can get you by if you don’t have access to flat response monitors, but a good set of monitors makes for less work.

Yo guys check out my music plz…more to come. http://www.reverbnation.com/spitfie & http://www.wemix.com/spitfie

I really like this SAMPLE EVERYTHING style, all these sounds blended together and reversed here and there sound great, however.
One major problem you have to look at your meters and EQ, the kickdrums and bass they’re distorting into oblivion on some tracks like the publix commercial. Protip: Don’t EQ the hell out of the low frequencies to make your own sound system seem like it has a big giant subwoofer, make it sound ‘normal’ on your system. And if somebody did play this track one a big giant subwoofer it’d sound too bassy and bad.
Also look at your meters! If they’re red at the top that’s a bad thing, take the volume down a bit and use a limiter to keep it from going over the maximum.
For easy to use limiters that sound good I can recommend the Waves L series (L3 LL in particular because of its profile properties you can fiddle with).

About monitors, I use avarage consumer speakers that generally sound too warm and some decent headphones. Nowadays I cross-reference a lot during the mix to find a nice avarage. I wish I could have some instant car-audio sounding thing as well to save time of burning a CD, but hey well ;).

In my opinion using studio monitors in a home-mixing situation is indeed slightly overrated. In a home-mixing situation like most of us here you really can’t rely on a single monitor because of the very ‘coloured’ accoustics. So sure you can buy some sweet Genelecs to set up in your bedroom/studio room/whatever but they were made to be set up in a nice accoustic environment (unless you spend 20k-30k on the ones that adapt to their surroundings) and so kinda missing their goal. Even if you’re completely used to the accoustic colour of your room you can still mess up with a reverb or trying to spot phasing in your drums’ overhead mics.
So I’m not saying ‘don’t use monitors’ but keep in mind they’re simply less effective in a home environment and use as many references as you can when you’re mixing.

I appreciate the spot light

i bought komplete before i got sick, and now that im out of the hospital and got most of the studio moved into my house, whats teh best way to set it up?
run it off the dvd’s or install everything to an external hdd and stream it from there? ive not even opened the box yet, and ive always been a hardware guy. now instead of a rack of synths and five keyboards, i have one controller doing all of that and im stoked, i just dont know how the fuck to use it… i know u guys fuck with native instruments stuff so help me out.

also, srsly, if anybody knows anything about sony dmx-r100’s, im having an issue.

Check out KomboKaze’s spotlight blog post in my hip-hop thread!

Thanks xyanide i really appreciate the Feedback. Most of the stuff i uploaded was stuff i knew was samplebased and wouldn’t be attempting to sell. I have Dr. Dre Headphones so i reference everything in them now if not produce from the jump with them. I have been sitting on a lot of music i’ve created for years now and all of those tracks are 5+ years old. I totally agree and understand the comments about the EQ’s, i can tell you definitely are an engineer by knowing that i EQ’d stuff to make it sound good lol. Forgive me because at the time i was doing an internship under Alvin Speights http://www.discogs.com/artist/Alvin+Speights and as soon as i found out how to play with EQ’s i had to use them everytime at the time lol. I would like more input from you though, pm me your email or email me at spitfiemusic@live.com so i can possibly connect with you on some more recent music and get a 2nd opinion since you never mentioned my music was bad during your post
