So was 2009 an awful year when Michael Jackson died? Was 2014 a terrible year because Robin Williams committed suicide? These guys may have had influence, but they’re more or less no human than you or me.
Ali was the motherfucking man, but the year in which he passed away had nothing to do with the state of his health. It’s just the natural passage of time.
In the ring, probably not (definitely arguable though) but his athletic prowess was boosted by his beliefs that he firmly stuck to and it cost him his championship at the prime years of his career. Not to mention he did this in an era where boxing and baseball were America’s biggest sports.
The issue is HOW MANY are dying this quickly in 2016. So many legends of their field have died. Like MAJOR influences on the world. How many major deaths can you name in 2009 or 2014 beyond those two, and how many occurred in the first 5 months?
Go through 2009 and 2014 and find me deaths as big as these:
Bowie
Prince
Ali
Followed by
Maurice White
Sir George Martin
Lemmy
Merle Haggard
Supreme Court Justice Scalia
You can also add these
Alan Rickman
Garry Shandling (mostly important behind the scenes where he helped a TON of comedians make it).
Phife Dawg (A tribe called quest shaped Hip Hop in so many ways)
Frank Sinatra Jr
Harper Lee
Natalie Cole
and at least a half dozen more pretty big deaths, like Vanity and Chyna. However the first 8 are HUGE things to lose, especially the first 3. All 3 of those are individually as important as Jackson was. This is like 2009x3 minimum.
The man was more than a boxer, he was a force of nature. Unapologetic to the status quo, he refused to break his principles and go to Vietnam, because he knew he stood as an example to the youth. He used up some of his prime boxing years just make a statement of the injustices faced by not only blacks, but the Vietnamese as well.
Rest In Peace Muhammad Ali, you fought the good fight.
Fun fact: He changed his name because he assumed that like a lot African Americans, it came from that of a horrible racist slave owner. That it was his “slave name”
However the man he was named after was actually an anti-slavery abolitionist and freed Ali’s ancestor(s), the man’s name was Cassius Clay and Ali was named in his honor and not for the sake of claiming human “property”.
