Most well thought-out character?

Having a balanced/unique moveset doesn’t mean he’s “good design”. There’s also the fact that

[LIST]
[*]His entire moveset is just copy pasted from other characters (even his normals, from Urien) and buffed to be as overpowered as possible because in the original arcade release, he wasn’t playable, simply a character to give you a hard time at the end of arcade mode, and then nerfed for the console version so players could play him. Capcom copy pasting normals from some other character that was well designed isn’t “good design” for the same reason that me typing The Adventures of Huck Finn into Microsoft Word doesn’t make it “good writing” on my part.
[
]Overall even his character design looks incomplete. He’s like a blank model that they gave a yin yang stomach.
[
]He was designed to do “everything”. The core of a perfectly imbalanced game is that no matter how good a player is, his character can’t be good at everything. Seth was designed to do exactly that, so much so that they’ve had to take away some of his tools (like Yoga Sniper).

Don’t get me wrong, I like my Seth. But he’s not well designed.

I’d agree with Dhalsim and Rose. And Guile is a pretty decent design.

Guile

I’m probably horribly wrong, but I thought he could aim his Ultra either straight across or straight up depending if he 3 punched or 3 kicked the Ultra motion…
If so, you might be over exaggerating that point. Although I don’t really know the game or Oni enough to really talk about him :x

That’s correct, plus he can shoot the ultra at a 45 degree angle downwards if he does it in the air. So it is a pretty nice ultra, still not the most original…since the fireball ultra all originates from Ryu’s super fireball way back from ST.

this thread is a little confusing to me but as for the most well thought-out character for sf4 i’d say Hakan. he seems perfect in visual design for sf4 and his gameplay is actually very well thought-out and feels refreshing and unexplored, but still flawed. too flawed it seems ATM but i think that he’s the best thing they came up with in sf4. as far as sf characters in general, i’d say Guile and Ryu but the sf4 team didn’t come up with them, they were already created and re-created many times before.

Yeah, I think if Hakan was a little better when not oiled he would be a complete good design.

Yea he can, but the point I was making is there’s no reason for having a kick version that shoots vertically into the air. What purpose does it serve? No one’s gonna jump into that thing and it’s not gonna stuff a jumpin or a deep crossup. It’s not like Skullomania or Dr. Doom’s super where it comes down on the opponent’s head. It’s very situational and unpractical. Oni has all these air options in a game that doesn’t take place in the air. It makes no sense.

Her anti air game is too shitty for me to think Capcom took their time.

Ryu probably has the best design, E.Honda is up there.

Akuma.
Yun.
Guile.
Rufus.

Rose is the most thought out.

I think people are muddling aesthetics design and gameplay design.

It feels like I’m in the minority, but I actually think the SF shotos are badly designed. They’re all a smidge too good. Other characters have strengths and weaknesses, but shotos have average abilities across the board coupled with one or two exceptional aspects.

In general I also think any character that is balanced out through low life (ie. Seth) or low damage output (ie. Storm in UMVC3) is badly designed. Same goes for any character that lacks tools but has lots of life (ie. T.Hawk) or deals huge damage (ie. Zafina in TTT2). It just seems those are the absolute laziest ways to create a character.

My vote for most well thought-out character goes to Rose. She neither lacks tools nor is she overflowing with them. I think she is what a “fair” shoto might look like (either her or Filia from Skullgirls).

I sometimes think she’s too fair for that kind of game

I was saying Seth is still designed poorly, as is everyone in the cast.

I think she’s too fair for the game she’s in right now at times.

I think most characters are well designed and have a lot of thought put into them. The tools match their purposes and their weaknesses most of the time.

I think most characters are well thought-out except for Seth. He is a turd sandwich.

That’s like saying that Alakazam is badly designed. And that’s blasphemy, as we all know he’s the most awesome Pokemon.

Actually I think Juri is really well done. The problem is just that the rest of the cast isn’t, so she becomes lacking (eg c.MP/c.HP losing to jumpins due to too good hitboxes on air attacks, lack of reversal options vs chars like Gouki/Dictator/Fei) - her tools are fine, other chars tools are derp :shy:

Kadabra is the cheapest Pokémon in the original games. So. Incredibly. Cheap.

Alakazam blows, overpowered douche

As someone who mains her (along with Chun, why do I do this to myself with this game) I find that I say this to myself a lot when I play good Seths. Rose is just too honest of a character in this busted AE 2012 world.

Rose for sure, she’s the only honest character in the entire game.
As for character design only i really love Bison and Sagat.
