Strider and Spiral dont really compare, spiral is open game chip for building meter safely, and Strider is mid-game/closer chip after youve already built meter and killed point char or assist hopefully. Spirals assists are better across the board, but paired with the right people Striders assists are effective as well.

To get back on topic if I had to play without top 4 id prolly play something like Ruby, Iron Man,Doom or Tron…but I dont really consider that low tier, high to mid at worst. BH and company would prolly be most effective if only the top 4 were nixed.

A good spiral with and drones is worse to deal with than a good strider with doom IMO.

though strider is still too fucking good because of orbs. you can’t do shit with orbs around, even on a scrub. and a somewhat free lockdown for at least a bit. scrub level players’ spirals are easier to handle.

this is all while playing mags/msp

anyway, non top tier…I’d say anakaris/IM/sonson…but shit like tron rings and rocks stop sonson pretty bad…and doom or bh or any other keepaway is hard for anakaris to handle.

I’d mix with cyc/ken/doom/IM/cammy/ruby/tron/psylocke/anakaris/sonson

ruby/ken/doom would be nice without having to worry about top4

I’ve used Strider/Cyke/Doom for nearly 4 years against big 4 teams and held my own during that time. You take away the big 4, I’ll be more than happy to get that money. Other than that, the basic formula of Battery/Spender/Support Anchor will give you a lot of options.

Batteries: Ruby, Marrow, Omega Red, Spiral
Spenders: Silver Samurai, anyone else with a spammable super
Supporters: Shotos, Cammy, Commando, Colossus
Characters who fit in all 3: Blackheart, Doom, Cyke

Or you can have Cyke/Gambit/DHC Finisher with a good AA (IM, Commando, Morrigan, Ryu, Akuma)

i think ruby fits into all three catagories.

low tier i like:

  • Wolverines/Jin expansion
  • Venom/Spiral is effective both ways
  • Tron/Spiral is effective both ways
  • Sim/Guile AA( zones great and sets up air throws low to the ground). I ussually pick doom with this team and pick dooms variety assist just as much as the rocks. Guile/Doom variety is fuckign great.

i have a related question, in a low tier tourney, other players cant use the gods and a few of the top tiers either, so what are the best low tier tourney teams

ASSUMING U WILL NEVER HAVE TO MATCH UP AGAINST STORM/SENT/MAG/CABLE/IRON/SPIRAL ETC.

there is no set standard yet to what are THE low tier rules so the best teams are going to be according to the rules.

I think in all the low tier setups, its safe to say that mummy, ruby heart, mega man should be all up there along with others I don’t feel like mentioning.

Magneto, Storm, Sentinel, and Cable are the only ones banned based on the first post. This means some really wrong stuff is still present.

Basically, you can replace Sentinel in any team with Juggernaut or Ironman and the odds are that the team will be good. Same with Doom as his AA assist is good.
-Cable can be replaced with Ironman, War Machine, Spiral, or Iceman.
-Storm can be replaced with Dhalsim, Morrigan, Ironman, or War Machine
-Magneto, see Storm, but add Rogue to the list.

Iceman also becomes a lot better if you eliminate the big 4. With those 4 matchups gone, the only bad matchups he really has are strider and possibly spiral.

yeah, mobile/keepaway chars would own the rest (they would do better than rush/mixup characters that don’t have the speed/dash/mobility of mag/storm) except for the trappers (strider/spiral) though the trappers are sort of like keepawayers anyway (having shit on the screen)

Iceman would work well with almost anyone just because he can build meter well and his assist will clean up the floor much like storm’s proj, but faster. The one thing he would really lack in a non Big 4 environment is killing power and DHC compatibility. If you want to run Iceman on point, I’d say Dr. Doom and BH work well as well as any defensive assist. Iceman/Strider would also work pretty well in itself.

Another thing that becomes more effective without the big 4 is Jin’s Anti Air. Without Storm and Sentinel, most fights are now fought on the horizontal plane, which Jin totally cleans up. Against anyone else outside of the big 4, he makes most point characters totally unrushable.

You could say the same with just about any other assist. But Jin already outprioritizes most other assists on the ground including colossus. You could just as well bait an assist, then punish it with Jin point blank. Jin AA’s problem has never been getting punished. Every assist can get countercalled if misused. The problem with Jin’s AA is that it’s only meant for pure rushdown from a horizontal plane. If you lose Storm and Sentinel, you don’t have to worry about that angle as much. The only other two who will give you problems from that angle will be Blackheart and Doom.

yeah i just tested it, by counter calling it you can punish it, but if both are called at the same time, either Jin assist beats colossus and the point character(if close) or colossus and Jin are canceled out (Note even if you aren’t in there face, the point can still be hit.)

I didn’t want to mention Iceman, but yes. He get’s almost as wrong as say, Cyclops. In some aspects, much worse.

Much of what’s below is common knowledge.

Give Iceman to say Spiral and it works both ways. Put Cyclops on the end, and that’s real annoying.

Iceman-Spiral-a
-Start calling Spiral-a and firing Icebeams. Use upwards ones to prevent jump-outs, and horizontal ones when they block the knifeball assist. Also use tiger knee Icebeams with this. If they get close, call Cyclops, and if they eat it, dash in and air combo them [more painful], or just Icebeam them out of Cyclops [more effective due to the sheer annoyance factor]. Sometimes do the command while watching where they are, and hit the button late. If they are in the air, hit hard punch. If on the ground, hit lp. You can also call Spiral, and just jump back with Icebeams.

-Spiral-Cable-a trap using the icebeam assist. No chance without big 4 influence.

Iceman-Doom-b/a is also real irritating too.

Iceman-Doom-b
-Start firing icebeams with the Doom AA aimed up so they can’t superjump, and then horizontal ones so that they take more block damage. If you have Cyclops and they eat it, dash in, sj and combo them. DHC in Doom.

Iceman-Guile
Guile can also work with Iceman. In fact, Iceman-a is just as good as Cable-a [I still think Cable-a is one of the best assists in the entire game. The problem? someone choosing Cable-b and alpha countering in to kill it. I did this once; Not pretty.] Calling Iceman to protect Guile as he constantly jumps / dashes in ending his strings with sonic booms is kinda annoying. In addition, Iceman can use Guile’s flash kick assist. Put Cyclops or Doom with these guys.

BTW, Doom assist owns jin-b assist for free.

Gief/Jugg/Tron:

Jugg/Tron and Tron/Jugg Team Z corner rape. Gief/Jugg gets a ghetto 5 fierce with cross-up HP, launcher + Jugg splash assist, HP, (jugg), HP. Its over 60% life on no bar and remain close. Gief can also get a hit, Lariat xx FAB dhc Headcrush.
