Mortal Kombat, anyone?

I don’t know if the arcade had a bootleg, but I recall doing Noob’s infinite in UMK3.

To select him you had to enter the codes before the round starts.

mod said it was getting out of hand. Really no one was mad or getting into flame wars. Noob and Rain are only in the snes and gensis versions. People just bad mouth UMK3, and these same people play mvc2 and cvs2, and other un-balanced games. Which doesnt make any sense cause no game has perfect balance; maybe but VF4evo

I honestly dont see a valid reason to close down the mk thread, we were only talking about strats and just watever gaming threads talk about…it was all pretty typical. Looks like a certain mod has his head up his ass. Anyways shock i had asked in the last thread wat was kabals win ratio agaisnt sheeva, is it something like 8-2/9-1?

People make broad generalizations about things people say and games people play, without taking into account the possibility that some people enjoy or at least tolerate the games they’ve been pigeonholed into hating… don’t they?

Noob was only selectable in the wavenet version of UMK3, which was basically a demo back in the late 90s that never took off. He had a teleport but it wasn’t a move that could attack, I dunno what the limts were.

With Kabal to Sheeva it’s hard to say, maybe just put it as their tier numbers and say is 23-1 odds but that might be a little unfair. Certain characters really can’t beat a good a Kabal, but at least half the cast in the hands of an expert player for that character can be considered anywhere from “gives him trouble” to “he’s gotta be on his game” to win. An average Sheeva player will lose a lot more often to an average Kabal player than a pro Sheeva vs a Pro Kabal. There are certain things about her that make it harder to win, namely her height vs the air fireballs, her duck animation gets stuck under pressure for some reason, but it doesn’t register as ducking. She’s highly vulnerable to the game’s system which makes her reverse broken.

Some people say “It matters who is playing, the better player will always win.” But as we all know here, that isn’t true. The top tier are there because it’s easier to win with them, meaning you don’t have to be as good to beat most players with a few characters. The character strengths still have influence on the outcome of the match. I use the ratio system often and say something like, it would take a ratio 10 (of 10) Sheeva to beat even a ratio 5 or so Kabal player consistently. This applies to many games. The better player will always win when they are using the same character. Then you have to get into people who play eachother a lot, and when they know how that person plays so well on top of their regular strats, tiers can be a little fuzzy but you will still see it come into play, ie: familiar players picking the top characters just to beat eachother.

I can beat just about any Kabal player no matter how good they are with Reptile, and my Reptile isn’t the best but the match sets are close. For example at ECCXI the finals were me as Reptile vs Bill’s dirty nasty Kabal. He came back through the losers brack and won the first set 3 - 2 all Kabal vs Reptile, then the second set I won 3 - 0 so technically the outcome was 5 - 3. So maybe this was considered a ratio 9 Reptile vs ratio 8.5 Kabal?

Sheeva isnt even fun to play, id rather play Sean then Sheeva.

I dont know why people bring up Sean anyway, its not like Sean or 12 are ever going to win evo or any major tournament.

There are some fun parts to Sheeva. A very powerful autocombo means easy damage. And she has 2 unblockable (but avoidable) special moves. Unfortunately just about anything you can imagine will combo on her. And she’s too tall.

Was the DS port of UMK3 any good? I read that it had online play and was thinking of picking it up, but remembered the the MK Advance fiasco.

UMK DS is worth picking up. I wouldn’t take the set up seriously for true competitive play but it’s fun and plays like the arcade, just a bit faster.

Sounds like a good deal. Thanks man.

I got the DS UMK3 cause of Wi-Fi battles, and you dont need someones F-code to play.

I like how I made this thread, got negged to shit for it, and now it’s a thriving paradise of a thread. Good shit, I lold.

And you call yourself a moderator?

I seriously don’t know why the hell Midway even made that statement to begin with. Good games take time, and one year is definitely not enough to make a substantial title. Look at what happened to Mortal Kombat Armageddon, for example: No bios in-game, narrated endings with no afterthought behind them, recycled costumes, fighting styles and designs from the previous games and so on, and so forth.

Any MK fan (including myself) would tell you that in nearly every game he speaks of, Ed Boon would always make the following statement:

“I wanted to put that in, but we just didn’t have enough time.”

Then again, he said that in response to “Why can’t Blaze and Mokap have their own moves or Fatalities?”, and they had four whole years to work on that game.

Well, I’m hoping that whatever MK8 turns out to be, it’s something that will rekindle my faith in the franchise.

I don’t see why your surprised at stuff like that. Even on its best days/games, the MK titles were always done rather Half-assed.

The only way things will change is if the morons in charge are replaced by a GOOD game design team that actually know what they’re doing.

MK series: Good concepts/design that are usually executed Poorly in the end, but who cares if it sucks when you can rip your opponent’s head off right? Right?

Edit: Shaolin monks kicked all kinds of ass though. A rare gem that one is.

I don’t know if this has been answered or not since I haven’t checked FGD since that last MK thread got stupid, but what’re the differences of the DS Port to Arcade? Is there just random lag when playing people? or anything serious? Cause I’m probably going to get this next week.

the DS port is supposed to be arcade perfect. go buy it.

I love UMK3 not because it’s a good game but because MK was the first fighter I ever played and therefore will always have a soft spot in my heart for. I always liked to play scorpion and robot smoke.

Wow@me reviving a dead thread.

I’m starting to play MKA with a friend for shits and giggles, where can I find info on it like air cancelling, combos, infinites, strats, etc? SRK isn’t exactly the booming place for MK lol

go check www.mortalkombatonline.com forums. theres high level strats for the 3d MKs in there. I would say www.ultimatemk.com but they focus on more on umk3/ the 2d games. check both sites though
