Actually I thought of alot of things recently, enough to write a college essay, but I need to digest it first and do some R&D (playing and watching).

It’s really hard to answer your question nadir because there’s so many different elements involved that make up a SF player, combined with the all the dynamics when the said player goes against another player… and you have a 6 dimensional jiggsaw puzzle to solve.
SF is already a game that has no language, and few players themselves can describe their play or why they’re good. I remember Prez used to say to me : “I don’t know why I win, I don’t know why I’m good.” Which says alot.
So many things are unconscious about it too. Poker is also a competitive game and only now articles are coming out describing the subtleties of the game. This is done by professional writers who are experts in psychology and played the game for 20+ years with interviews of all players. There’s alot of elements I can take from that that help describe SF as an analogy, and I will because I can confirm that it’s true. It’s just that SF is more complex game. And like I said there’s alot more dynamics, and those dynamics interfere with each other which makes it hard to pull all the weeds out and come up with a simple explanation. For example, in poker time plays a much smaller factor, it sometimes makes a difference if you make your move fast or take your time but usually it’s a small factor. In street fighter you have reflexes, timing, combo ability, environmental understanding, manual dexterity etc. etc. that interfere with other important influences like people reading skills, emotional control, emotional influence (bullying, setting on-tilt), setting traps, mixing up gameplay to confuse opponent, etc.
The latter factors are actually present in both Poker and Street Fighter.
Since no research has ever really been done on Street Fighter, except for Sirlin and the Domination 101 articles, which are more guidelines than scientific explanations. I will make a small stab at it using the poker analogy because I read alot about it, and I have enough SF experience.
They say that Poker has 2 important elements for success : Card Reading skills and People reading skills. There are sub-elements like aggression, discipline, and creativity, but these two are the most basic. Card reading skills means you know where you are percentage wise in a hand, and what are your chances to win the pot and if it’s worth to call a certain amount compared to your chances to win the hand. It’s mostly math, and either you know the exact numbers or it comes to you as a sense. You don’t need someone to tell you the exact percent chance that your pocket Jacks will beat pocket Aces pre-flop, you just kinda know that you have a very low chance to win. But how do you even know that the other person might have pocket Aces ? This is people reading skills. With time you can kinda guess what the person has and then use the math to know whether you should call,raise, or fold.
This is also true for street fighter. Card reading skills is basically analogous to know the game engine. You know which anti-air beats which air attack, that this combo will work in this situation, or that the jab dragon punch will stuff his wake up meaty attack. But how do you even know that he will try to attempt a meaty attack ? Well that’s where people reading skills come in.
In poker, it has been shown that people reading skills are far more important for success than card reading skills. Once you know what the other person has, he’s toast. In SF, Like it or not players are lazy and usually have predictable tendencies, and once you learn their general patterns, they’re toast. You just need to use the tools at hand to punish them from their patterns. Maybe your tools are not as good as their tools (you might punish them for throwing a fireball by a simple jump kick, sweep instead or jump kick, low forward, super). But the point is that you are reducing their damage while preserving your own.
JFL and Prez were good examples of how important people reading skills are. While they had very poor game engine knowledge/ability, they read their opponent’s strategies perfectly. As long as they had the basic tools to punish their mistakes it was enough to win. They might have landed half the damage from the openings they saw but they saw 5 openings in your game before you even saw one in theirs.
Today’s new dominant players (Vess,Fred) have maximized their techniques and reading abilities but also use other elements to make them even more dominant. Fred has alot of initiative and creativity, Vess is a very safe player but will try to make you frustrated (on-tilt) first and keep you frustrated before he can really put on the pressure. But like I said there are so many other elements that are not obvious it’s not easy to analyze a player or the game.
