I didnt catch all of the matches, but would it possible to explain some of the scenarios of how he caught many people crouch teching? What kind of frame trips did he use to punish players who crouch teched? I know i need to implement frame traps into my game as i rely too much on kara (and much of the time, it just gets teched). Thanks

Excellent play and fortunate matchups until the final. I don’t think he ever had to play a Guile or Blanka. His footsies are incredibly solid, but I’m not a fan of the way he handles his ambigous jump-ins post knockdown.

I think his fundamentals with his shenanigans and that cross up tatsu that worked so well. Also hes not afraid to just fierce dp something and get called a flow chart because he knows he’s doing it for a reason.

some quick observations from the stream

-IMO he had the best footsies outta anyone on hte stream.

-Also he took advantage of people being scared of karathrow and stepkick.

-I noticed he didn’t go for many mixups after EX.tatsu, and usually just went into cr.short most of hte time. He didn’t really go too much for hte kara grab if hte cr.short block missed, and would try to frametrap the crouch tech

-used inazuma kick quite a bit.

Oh and Momochi did fight a blanka, EvilRahsaan.

Momochi coulda donee that with any character he wanted but he had faith in ken.it means a lot ken shoulda took. 1st if it was daigos ken he woulda scraped gamerbee but momchi has the footsies n spacing but he doesn’t have daigos crazy reaction and u need to dp at least half of those damn jauar kics to make him think about just throwing it out

he didn’t go for cr short after cross up tatsu as much as he went into sweep and sometimes cr jab but i didnt watch much of the 5v5 sp ,aybe thats what you were referring too.

This just shows fundamentals > everything else but also even with the reactions I think it was him not knowing the match up and shitty u1. imagine if everytime he did fake u1 if that was cr mk xx fb fadc u2 so much more damage and since he uses it so much i cant see why he didnt switch to it unless he had no faith in his execution.

what are you guys’ opinion on Ken now? after seeing Momochi rip it up.

my opinion is i need to work on my footsies and if they give him the buffs he needs like sweep or walk speed or more ways to land full U1 possibly and probably top tier.

Ken doesn’t need to be top tier to do well wit him. Basically fundamentals + skills and execution(even decent-good) will net you a really good results with Ken.

Seeing how Justin Wong can make Makoto very deadly, seeing how Marn can beat the champ Daigo with Dudley, these characters don’t need to be top tier to do well. They just need to have fundamentals, and you gotta learn your character’s rhythm. With Dudley, you have to play a certain way to make your opponents want to mash and force errors on them, and that’s what makes Marn effective with Duds. Makoto just needs to rush and do good mixups to win, and not rely so much on her command throw, until your opponent doesn’t expect it, then you catch 'em with it and you win.

Sad to see that Dee-Jay isn’t well represented still though :frowning:

theres a really good japanese deejay i forgot his name though sorry. anyway what i was saying is with a few buffs ken would be top tier. not saying he needs to be im saying if they give him some better materials which i honestly think he deserves. also making his overhead two hits again to punish FA would be a nice buff.

My opinions are absolutely the same: You gotta be solid to play SSF4 (Ken). Shenanigans only get you so far…

Yeah I agree, I still stand firm where I am. Momochi really is the exception when talking about fundamentals and knowing your spacing and playing to a certain characters strengths. I still think Ken needs help.

So, you think you don’t need to get better, but they should just make ken better instead? Thats funny.

Momochi’s Ken was fucking amazing though. Such solid zoning and spacing. But, its also Momochi’s style where he likes to walk back and forth a lot which helps a lot. It fucks with your op’s ability to keep track of spacing when he keeps moving around like that. Smart stuff.

I think Ken is, for the most part, overall sound, well-rounded character like Ryu. There are some rough edges that could definitely be evened out. However, it is possible to win with Ken in major tournies, and it is possible to hang with the highest tiers in this game. What makes Momochi so good is that his positioning is usually really on point. Also, he is very, very patient. Rarely is he ever reckless. When he goes in, he has some pretty good mix-ups and gimmicks, and makes fairly good combo choices. Footies/fundamentals and frame traps are also good. He is good at adapting. I guess he gets into the oppenents head the way he’ll seemingly use random shoryus. So conditioning and out-thinking the other player is part of it too. If I were to critique him, it would be that he could anti-air more and on the flip side, make his jump-ins better. This is not a general critique, as he is solid at doing both, but more of a critique of specific cases that stick out in my head.

A final thought, I’m thinking Ken’s comeback and clutch factor are not so hot…

I think Ken is fine, maybe some minor tweaks here and there.

Adon’s needs a little tweak also. Adon players now are the like Sagat players of SF4 IMHO.

Oh my fucking God, I spit out my drink all over my screen. SRK is full of comedians.

please tell me im misreading this and you did not just compare adon to vanilla sagat

I honestly don’t know what Ken needs if anything anymore. Well, I know what he needs, but I don’t know if he’s worse off than any other character, overall. It doesn’t help that I live in an area where I can’t get any live tournament action. Getting on XBL and racking up 20 game win streaks against people you don’t know doesn’t really let you know where you or your character really stands. Based on that limited amount of experience, I honestly don’t feel completely overwhelmed by any character. Guile, Blanka and Cammy frustrate me a bit, but I definitely don’t feel completely outclassed like I sometimes did in vanilla.

Also, take a close look at the latest tier list. Ken is ranked 15th overall, which is about middle of the pack. But then take a look at his actual matchups, especially against the top two tiers (the characters you see everyone playing). The only characters who have FEWER bad matchups (4/6 or worse) than Ken are Chun Li and Seth.

Ken has fewer bad matchups among the top tier than Ryu or Akuma. The characters at the very, very top of the list beat up on the bottom tier characters that no one ever plays really badly. That’s why their rankings are so high overall. I’m not saying I wouldn’t like to have a few buffs, but you throw anything major at Ken and he will be overpowered.

I think Momochi gonna spend some time learning how to fight Adon now, heh. You could read the full interview of GamerBee here. Mad props to GamerBee, he’s so clutch like against Art, Mike Ross, Dieminion, and Jwong. I’m disappointed Momochi didn’t take the whole thing, but if anyone else deserved to take it, it was definitely GamerBee.
