News: Mortal Kombat DLC characters revealed - ComputerAndVideoGames.com

Mortal Kombat developer Netherrealm Studios has confirmed the first DLC characters planned for its upcoming 2011 reboot.

The developer told CVG in a recent interview that it doesn’t want MK 2011’s add-on content to be limited to simple costume or stage additions - and the new characters it’s working on will have “all the good stuff”.

“They won’t be copy and pasted from characters already in the game - they’re going to have their own unique fighting styles, moves, fatalities and x-rays - all the good stuff,” producer Hans Lo told CVG.

"[The two we’re adding] are Kenshi, who players will recognise from previous MK games, and more excitingly we’re adding Scarlet.

"Anyone who knows the history of Mortal Kombat will tell you that back in the days of the arcade - when they did just palette swap characters to come up with multiple fighters in the game - there was a glitch in one of the old arcade machines that caused the Jade/Katana/Milena female ninja to glitch and turn red.

“People always thought it was a hidden unlockable character and it wasn’t, it was purely a programming glitch. They’ve always speculated and in fact it was the fans who named her Scarlet to begin with. She’s no longer a glitch - she’s an actual character, and she’ll be coming pretty soon post-launch.”

Another character said to be planned for the fighter is MK2 sub-boss Kintaro. Netherrealm said it’ll continue to work on DLC for Mortal Kombat “as long as people are playing it”.

Mortal Kombat’s out in Europe on April 21.

Well, here, let me try to give you hope in three ways, albeit by referencing the shitty 3-D games.

1. Both Kabal and Mavado were top tier in Armageddon despite having the same weapon style, and their top tier status was for two different reasons.
2. I hate to reference Smash Bros. on SRK because it starts an infernal shitstorm more often than not, but what I said earlier about Kabal and Mavado also applies to Fox and Falco in Melee. They had the same movesets, but the different properties of the moves themselves made them top tier for different reasons.
3. Goro and Kintaro played differently in Armageddon. Really differently.

Seriously though, since the whole goal is making MK9’s roster as diverse as possible, I’m expecting Goro and Kintaro to play as differently as Zangief and T. Hawk, for a lack of a better comparison.

Speaking of which, I wonder what the fee for DLC characters will be. I hope they are sold in packs and not individually like in MvC3, while offering a fair price. 5 bucks a character can burn a hole into a guy’s pocket fast.

$5 for 2 or 3 sounds fair when you consider that the $60 game has around 30 fighters. $5 a fighter is outrageous relative to how much content you pay for in the actual game.

Edit: I guess the NRS Tweet earlier was saying the GamePro article was wrong beause it maybe listed Kintaro as DLC, and not because of Skarlett and Kenshi? I guess that’s a plausible excuse. Hmmm…

What’s the verdict on Rain being ingame now, then, that he’s definitely not early DLC? Being in the background of a stage doesn’t preclude him from being in the game, I don’t think, seeing as Cyrax is in the background of a UMK3 stage yet still playable ingame.

Just realized, no bosses in the screen. Possible that all the secret characters share a character slot? I hear they did that in MKvDC for Shao Kahn and Darkseid (though I never played it so I’m not sure on that).

You see those arrows right next to the left and right bottom corner boxes? I think either another screen pops up, or those particular boxes cycle through the hidden characters.
