Who else is there that is a muscular badass and can rip their enemies to gory shreds with a chainsaw gun.
If they were able to put a character named Stryker who had no Magical type of powers and only used police weapons for attacks, they can definitely put in Marcus Fenix.
I remember an interview a while back with Midway that they wanted to make their next MK installment have a Gears of War style of look. Now its their chance to have an actual Gears of War character in MK9.
Plus, it will be Win Win for MS since he will be a great promotional tool for the upcoming Gears of War 3.
Dude could have so many potential fatalities.
The obvious chainsaw, the hammer of dawn, the giant worm coming up out of the ground and eating the opponent, etc…
edit: FUCK WHAT AM I SAYING THIS CONSOLE EXCLUSIVE SHIT IS SO STUPID
I’m not really bothered by Kratos. Partly because he’ll be on PS3 which I don’t own. And also because I’m assuming he just won’t be allowed in tourneys since it won’t be on both consoles.
If he’s not overpowered or broken I don’t think it presents an issue.
I can already see people playing theory fighter with Kratos and “insert microsoft character”. Now with Kratos, you’ll also get those people who think that Quan Chi is a direct ripoff of Kratos, without doing any reseach.
The single biggest promoter of all things Mortal Kombat on SRK? I don’t think so.
I don’t think Tim really wants it to fail, but he’s speaking for a lot of MK fans that have seen Boon and Midway put money in front of the fans for years now.
There has been a long history of them doing shit like this to make a quick buck and ignoring fans pleas for a real competitive level fighting game that is built to actually last more than a year until the next sequel is made.
But they’re clearly at least TRYING to actually build that competitive game. I don’t think they’ll succeed, but they’re trying and I give props for that. I just don’t see how having Kratos in the game makes a difference one way or the other (unless he ends up horribly broken).
Erm, no… I didn’t say Mortal Kombat, I said “this game”.
We all know who Tim is and most of us respect him.
I’ve lurked everyday since the MK board was made here and Tim has been very much against this game from the start. He probably has his own reasons and he’s entitled to them. However, if you actually do read these forums frequently you’ll notice a distinct opposition from Tim in relation to this game.
lol, nah you’re just reading too much into it. I talk to him in person about it, I think you’re just misinterpreting the fact that he likely has very low expectations for it due to plenty of past precedent set by Midway and Boon, and there are some signs pointing towards them doing the same things they’ve done before.
There are a lot of people who think that way, and they’ve been following MK for longer than I have so I have no reason to knock someone for being hesitant to embrace news like special guest characters being added.
Personally I think they are actually listening to the fans this time (to some extent) and it appears Netherrealms are actually trying to fix their mistakes from the other games.
As for what Tim really thinks, I’m sure he’ll tell us since I know for a fact he’s reading all of this as fast as we type it, lol.
I see what you mean when you say stuff like that though.
One thing about MK is that all of the games, even the shitty ones sell really well. Midway was never punished for doing the stupid shit. They did they go out of business, but they also released a bunch of other crappy games. The MK series was the only series they kept going from start to finish.
They kept getting the green light for new sequels and even Boon has said some of the crap they did was all inside jokes that should have never made it into releases.
So when you see them do something like put exclusives out which goes against their whole motto of wanting to revive MK to greatness it kind of makes you want them to regret it.
But yeah, it’s not really a big deal, it’s just something that kind of makes me cringe when I hear it.
Its bullshit when we hear stuff like “rebirth”, “returning to roots” etc and then, MORE GIMMICKS! WTF? it sucks. its been a LONG time since we got a decent MK, or better yet, just an MK. Whatever that 3D bullshit is, its not MK. It may have MK names, MK sounds, but its not MK.
Kratos is just in the game. He’s not even in story mode; he just has an arena and a moveset. How the hell does that tarnish anything about “rebirth” and roots they’ve been talking about? In terms of guest characters, they could do a hell of a lot worse. It’s not like it’s a power ranger or some shit; it’s a dude well known for being as/more violent than MK.
For the record, I’m not happy that resources are being wasted to put Kratos in the game. Still, it’s nothing to get bent out of shape over.
But here’s how these things work. Sony asks if they can put an exclusive character in the game that’s only available on PS3. Sony then drives a dump truck of money up to Warner Bros. offices.
Warner Bros. executives dive in and start swimming around like Scrooge McDuck (this is to show that they accept the offer).
It’s just a marketing gimmick. Like putting Star Wars characters in Soul Caliber.
Seriously though, in the end it doesn’t have a lot to do with whether or not the game is quality. It’s just very much like the kind of thing the MK team has done in the past.
You’re basically talking about the king of gimmicks and dumb characters when it comes to Midway/MK.
The biggest downside as it relates to it being a quality fighting game that we can use in tourneys and enjoy competitively are that if there is a Microsoft exclusive character, then one system needs to be set up as the default tourney system, and if you allow the exclusive chars to be used then the owners of the other system are fucked if he’s a top tier char (and given their history, it’s a good chance).
It’s not the same as SF, where you might use PS3 for the tourney standard, but 360 players are practicing with a game that is 99% the same and don’t have a matchup that they can’t learn.
