I have been using the Dualshock 3 for MK9 but wanted to buy a stick. However, since I do not play in tournaments and rely on playing online to have fun it is completely pointless for me to buy the beautiful MK9 TE fightstick or the Klassic one that will be released in the summer. MK9 is a great offline game but the online functionality is just flat out terrible.
I am pretty convinced Capcom is probably the only fighter franchinse this gen that has a games that are actually playable online
I am pretty disappointed in the Mortal Kombat series because they finally made a great game since UMK3 but they completely messed up the online in my opinion.
The spacing between buttons is almost exactly the same on the MK side of the layout as it is on the MC kombat panel. This layout is essentially an average between the Vewlix layout (Street Fighter) and the MC combat panel. The one difference is that the MK half is a little closer to the stick than on the MC combat panel, and the SF half is a little farther from the stick than on the standard MC TE stick (assuming you play using the curved half of the buttons and not the straight row on the right side of the Vewlix layout).
BTW, here is my latest revision of the layout, which you will probably want if you’re going to get a panel made up:
What method are you using to connect a keyboard? I have a XIM to use in shooters but it never really occured to me to use a keyboard for a fighting game, lol.
mortal kombat is a fighting game i cant imagine me playing on an arcade stick?
anyone care to share the experiences on playing mk9 on a stick?
cause we all grew up playing on you pads at home so i cant imagine a stick
I played MK9 on PS3 for about 1 month on the dualshock, 1 week on a Fightstick TE (SF4 layout), and the past few days on the same fightstick with a new Cthulhu board and the Madcatz Combat panel. My observations as a casual player who likes friendly competition:
Combos are a million times easier to execute with all your fingers rather than just the thumb. I went from stumbling over even the “Basic Kombos” to being able to do them very consistently, and then immediately started looking for as many advanced Mileena combos as I could find.
Since MK really only requires 4 directions with diagonals being only useful for buffering moves (afaik), I changed my JLF stick to a circle restrictor. Feels much more fluid, but I might need a slightly tighter spring because inputs get sloppy if I flick the stick. Also use a bat-top because that’s what I always played in the arcades in the 90s.
The switch from SF button-layout to MK Combat was a small one but helped my inputs immensely. Having block next to all attack buttons is extremely useful and makes finger positioning much less awkward at times.
Much less hand fatigue. My hands cramp up when I’m playing intense, precision games on a d-pad. It also chews up my left thumb playing fighters… no problems at all with a stick.
Adjusting to inputs takes a little bit. I still find moves ending with Down a bit awkward (Mileena’s roll, Cage’s nutpunch). But everything else came naturally and quickly.
SFIV TE with mad cats fight panel is the way to play this game imo, a traditional mk layout that makes sense, my gameplay improved drastically with this setup.
This is the issue I have with using the TE stick, and why I’ll probably switch to pad for this game (I’m not going to buy the MK stick). The MK layout and the SF layout are obviously not compatible. There’s no setup you can use without it being awkward.
This configuration on a TE is only slightly awkward for enhanced specials. BLK+4 is very funky, but BLK+3 is easily hit with middle finger on BLK, Thumb on 3.
1 BLK 2
3 FLIP 4
So if your characters most useful ex moves are with 1 and 2, your perfect
or try
1 FLIP 2
3 BLK 4
then ex moves with 3 and 4 are perfect.
I like FLIP in that position because an x-ray is simply a sf4 focus attack or 3S UOH
That’s exactly what I’m using. I was close to giving up on that controller until MK came out. Stick felt too weird to me. The PDP pad is all about motions so I missed my mark way too much. Silver 360 pad isn’t bad but it’s not better than the other stuff I have. So I went back to the Mad Catz and to my surprise I felt right at home. The speed of the floating d-pad makes doing motion easy but it’s also accurate. It’s nice to have a use for this controller finally.
