It was apparent this game was going to be a mistake when the first screenshots were released and it looked nothing like the concept art. I can’t believe people actually defended that shit.
Ya’ll still dumb for thinking concept art was representative of how the final product would look. It’s CONCEPT art. It’s meant to give an idea some visual form while it’s still being developed. It’s not a story board or a rough. Hell, it’s not even pre-alpha footage. Go look at concept art from other games, movies, etc. You’ll notice that a lot of that shit looks nothing like what it turned out as.
This isn’t a “defense,” either.

this game makes zoolanders indiegames look like poop
wait what
Finally downloading M#9 for PSN, and for some reason steam too.
To be honest, i feel a little bad for the team behind this game. Unlike the majority of the people that is quick to claim that this was a scam and shit like that, i kinda feel that they really tried to make something good but because they tried to cover so much they ended fucking up badly.
Now anything they do will be forever tainted because this fiasco. Which is sad in some way because even with all the bs surrounding this, Inafune still managed to make a lot of games that i like, even recently, like Soul Sacrifice for example.

Inafune says that he “owns the problems that came with this game”.

It wasn’t fucking concept art that looks like this:
where I’m like “Yeah the game will never look like this on a PS1.”
The concept art for Mighty No. 9 looked like something that looked good and was easily realizable with modern technology and the heaps of money they got shoved up their asses.
Concept art is supposed to give a game a certain direction in terms of how it looks and feels. The SotN one I just posted does this well, while MN9’s just makes you ask yourself what the fuck went wrong there.

Apparently a lot of the backers names aren’t even credited at the end.
It just says “A generous backer”.

What I learned in this thread is that a lot of you guys still don’t understand what “con man” means.
He offered to start a product, did so, and delivered. There was no con. He just released what seems to be a shitty-looking game.
He got a $4 million dollar backing from fans to make the game.
The game he made was crap

If you wanna be technical.
He can also be described as just a really really really shitty version of a shitty car salesman.

Shitty? He’s great.
He was able to convince tens of thousands to give him $4 million for the videogame-equivalent of a lemon.
Shitty version of a shitty car salesman?
…Wouldn’t that mean he would be the best in the business, then?
wonders why the disagreement
What you posted was not concept art. Hell, that art is of character designs, not gameplay complete with HUD.
At the end of the day, it’s still concept art and you KNEW it was concept art. No one said that was how the game was going to look. Was it possible? Probably…but it’s irrelevant because that promise was never made. They just so happened to release concept art of an in game state and people who were ignorant of what goes on during the process of creative development misinterpreted its intentions.
That art did what it was intended to do: display what the game was expected to play like, NOT LOOK LIKE. It’s sad that you guys cannot understand something as simple as this.
While I do understand where you’re coming from, that doesn’t chance the fact that you are still wrong. Yea, the game looks like shit considering the money he was given. Yea, the concept art gave people certain expectations. Yea, it may have been possible for the game to look close to the concept art at least on a couple platforms. No, that art was not representative of the final product.
Fixed.
I seriously do wonder what the hell happened behind the scenes.
I’ve heard a few stories of how game development can end up being nothing but headaches all around, especially when pie-in-the-sky ideas turn out to be unfeasible due to (list shit ton of) factors.
This right here seems to be ripe with enough material to make a documentary akin to Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse.
“What the hell is Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse?”
Oh, just a documentary of the making of the (in)famous Apolcalypse Now movie. Or rather, the making-of and all the shit that went wrong, did. Also see: Tropic Thunder.
The backers were supposed to specify what name was to be used upon receipt of an email a whiiiile back. I know I filled out that form, but it’s not surprising that a lot of people didn’t.
