Microsoft Windows 10 thread

Not that I’m aware of. they’re different things.

JPEG sucks in some fashions. I added that override, but it’d been that way since I think Windows 7. We want to convert the wallpaper lightning-quick normally.

hurr hurr hurr. Stupidity makes me not want to do nice things. Don’t be a tool.

It was in 7, but I honestly didn’t notice. I stuck to mostly the same black/white wall for years. As soon as I upgraded to W10 and changed my wall, I cringed.

Yeah, it was limited to the JPEG import path. If you PNG you’ll never notice.

Also the comment on that page that it is a compromise between file size and quality is dumb: it’s a compromise between “fast enough and excellent enough”. shrug

Oops, missed the free upgrade…

Just got the Anniversary Update. Thank God for bash, cmd scripts are the fucking worst. I never got around to learning PowerShell lmao, maybe when I try .NET development. Too bad I already do all my work in Linux, but having bash handy is very nice.

Also, it’s the same fucking thing again from my Win8 -> Win10 upgrade experience: all my Start menu icons are in disarray. sigh

I now finally get to try Cortana; she isn’t available in the Philippines, but the Anniversary Update let me try anyway if I use English (US). Apparently Cortana got a lot smarter at natural language. Reminders and searches are nice, but I’m still locking down a lot of the permissions. With Google, I never felt unsafe cause I could take measures if I was gonna do private stuff. With Cortana though, everything I do on my computer is visible somewhere? Damn…

Also apparently Edge has been upgraded, but I haven’t tried it.

New Start menu is jarring, but eh, I’ll get used to it. I’ve learned not to be attached to how Start looks after everything that happened after 7.

Bottom-right time widget now brings up time, calendar, and reminders on click, which is a welcome change.

Windows Update waits until after hours to reboot, which is good. People got mad at uncancellable updates in Windows 10, but I suspect those are the same people who are always hundreds of security updates behind. Automatic quiet-in-the-background updates should be the norm, and the Anniversary Update is a good step towards that.

Phone connectivity is also welcome. I already had that with Lenovo’s Phone Companion (bloatware was already on my laptop so I thought, might as well), but a native solution might mean better support in the future.

Overall, I like the update. Cortana’s privacy concerns are the biggest downside, but I guess everyone was wrestling with that since release. I’m still having my fun with Cortana so I probably won’t disable her for now, but I’ll definitely keep permissions to a minimum.

The new Windows big update is here, though you may want to hold on for a bit

but if you do install it, let us know how is it.

Can’t believe Microsoft is pushing this but then again the new generation is dumb enough to swallow this.

Maybe this will help more people to discover Linux.

This works for Win 10 Pro and Enterprise

I just went into group policy editor
Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Defer Windows Updates.

Enable the first policy and set to Current Branch for Business and set the days to 180
2nd Policy Enable and click the check box for “Pause Quality Updates”

Also a tip to disable ads in the file explorer

I’m… pretty certain that line has been uttered every iteration of Windows since at least '95.

How’s Windows 10 Season 3?

Cool…gonna wait until Halloween.

psa: if you’re using uxstyles, uninstall that before upgrading. uxstyles mangles a system dll.

Figures as much. Microsoft breaks so many unofficial things with each “Update”

Like the Anniversary Update, the Creators Update isn’t just a Update but a whole new OS.
After Reboot, you are treated to a set up window as if you just had a Fresh install.

Yeah, it turns out that when a third party tool decides to overwrite arbitrary system memory that that can tend to break things. facepalm

The sad part is that it appears the guy who wrote uxstyles knew about this months ago and yet this still isn’t fixed. I’m confused since it’s pretty clear what’s happening.
uxs: change “JUMP TO LINE 20” to "JUMP TO LINE 30"
w10 now reads "PAUSE, JUMP TO LINE 20"
uxs patches that to be “JUMP TO LINE 30O LINE 20”

It’s just the best. I can’t imagine why that would cause things to crash. :shake:

Wouldn’t it make sense for Microsoft to implement an integrity check before applying an update that is basically a new OS that can kill the computer?

When applying the update, can’t you have the OS boot into a secure mode without 3rd party software?

Neither option would address this.

According to your previous post:

An integrity check would detect that a system dll was changed and prevent the update from taking place and then you could have options for rectification, including but not limited to an OS system repair function or a specific solution based on a database of known issues and solutions Microsoft maintains.

Anyways, I have LTSB so my W10 doesn’t auto download doesn’t autoinstall updates.

I had a fun time installing the Creators Update. Everything went seemingly fine, then I kept getting “User Profile Cannot Be Loaded” after it installed. It was stuck at the profile login screen, didn’t even have the power icon in the bottom right to shutdown/restart. Couldn’t get into safe mode either. Last resort was to use system recovery drive I had to try to reinstall W10.

But then, after restarting the cpu 3-4 times, suddenly it triggered a screen where the update continued to go on. Everything fixed itself. Seems like it screwed itself up during one of the restarts it did during installation.

I feel bad for others that run into this and have absolutely no idea what to do.

Good thing I got Telemetry turned off in the group policy editor

You have Enterprise edition?

please tell me more about how I am wrong about the thing that I do for a living

That’s not how the dll is changed. Your well-intentioned suggestions are irrelevant.
