Just got the Anniversary Update. Thank God for bash, cmd scripts are the fucking worst. I never got around to learning PowerShell lmao, maybe when I try .NET development. Too bad I already do all my work in Linux, but having bash handy is very nice.
Also, it’s the same fucking thing again from my Win8 -> Win10 upgrade experience: all my Start menu icons are in disarray. sigh
I now finally get to try Cortana; she isn’t available in the Philippines, but the Anniversary Update let me try anyway if I use English (US). Apparently Cortana got a lot smarter at natural language. Reminders and searches are nice, but I’m still locking down a lot of the permissions. With Google, I never felt unsafe cause I could take measures if I was gonna do private stuff. With Cortana though, everything I do on my computer is visible somewhere? Damn…
Also apparently Edge has been upgraded, but I haven’t tried it.
New Start menu is jarring, but eh, I’ll get used to it. I’ve learned not to be attached to how Start looks after everything that happened after 7.
Bottom-right time widget now brings up time, calendar, and reminders on click, which is a welcome change.
Windows Update waits until after hours to reboot, which is good. People got mad at uncancellable updates in Windows 10, but I suspect those are the same people who are always hundreds of security updates behind. Automatic quiet-in-the-background updates should be the norm, and the Anniversary Update is a good step towards that.
Phone connectivity is also welcome. I already had that with Lenovo’s Phone Companion (bloatware was already on my laptop so I thought, might as well), but a native solution might mean better support in the future.
Overall, I like the update. Cortana’s privacy concerns are the biggest downside, but I guess everyone was wrestling with that since release. I’m still having my fun with Cortana so I probably won’t disable her for now, but I’ll definitely keep permissions to a minimum.
