Message to SNK Heads: STOP BEING SCAREDY CATS!

Why is that though. SNK is kind enough to release fighting games every fucking year, and SNK peeps still ride KOF 98’s cock as if their life depended on it. I mean, KOF 98 is one of my favorite games, but can’t we just enjoy the newest games without someone saying, “ITS NOT KOF 98 OMG I WONT PLAY IT I H8 Joo!!11!!”

if you like FHD and Breakers, you will love WHP.

And Pablo- I can, but i cant force other people to be as open minded as myself. MOST of our fighting game community as a whole dismisses nearly everything before trying it in the first place.

You are right, and it it is frustrating as hell.

Honestly, what’s the point of supporting games you don’t like? Play what you like, and damn the haters- even if they’re SNK fans. And push for the things that you do like- even if it means coming to the tourney and being the only one wanting to play the damn game…

I’m not going to support 2k2, or WHP, or Breakers, not because I dislike SNK, but because I judge each game on their own merits, not by who makes it. To me, that’s the difference between fan and fanboy.

Personally I’d support most any scene that looked capable of building a good-size following just because I’d like to see something break the monotony of the currently popular games. I do have limits though (for example fuck Melty Blood, game is dry and everyone who likes it is gay) so I guess really I agree with Arstal.

And see once again there in lies the problems…put yourself in my shoes everyone…due to the fact SNK fans have a choice in what they want to play…most instead of uniting decide NOT to unite…and only play what they want…

When really we need more like Rusheddown that will play others etc…

If you want the benefits that come with a more focused approach you can’t be afraid to lose the players that aren’t willing to diversify. Eventually they’ll come around and/or you’ll bring new people in to play the games you decide to keep running.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying not to try games, but I’m saying there’s no point in playing a game you don’t like just because it’s a tourney game. It’s the exact reason I won’t play 3s.

I’ll give games I don’t know a shot, but I don’t like it, I don’t like it and am not going to waste my time on it. A lot of SNK games to me fall into that category. When SNK gets it right it’s very good though.

i’d rep if you if i could.

that being said, polarity’s approach is probably the best route. 3 games to start, competent players will come around even if the lineup doesn’t offer their favorite game.

You are right about this, but in response I would say “play 5 Special”. That’s the SS game we SHOULD be running, anyway…and no console version is not a valid excuse, Breakers doesn’t have a console version either and we always run that!

Sorry if that’s cold, but with so many games to choose from, we need to settle on the best, and I don’t know a single person who would argue that Tenka is more balanced/diverse at high level than Special.

As such, I would toss LB2 and Ninja Master’s to the curb altogether. No biggie, since we never run them anyway…

As an aside, Last Blade 1 actually kinda intrigues me, as it was so much better-made, but don’t a bunch of the stages cause slowdown?

As already mentioned, Young Geese isn’t even the best character, though I would agree that he and Choi make Neowave suck. I see no point in playing that game when we have 98/2k2/XI…

You are right that a game dominated by infinites is just not worth playing competitively. As I just said above, I would discard these games altogether.

However, it IS possible for a game to have infinites that don’t dominate it. Garou, RB2, WHP, 98…

I hate it when people bitch period…because people bitch in KOFXI about Kula and Gato…IMO people that bitch about this stuff are weak…

either put up or shut up please…you do sound lame complaining all the time people…

People bitch about 2k2’s MAXmode and other things like tough controls etc…people are always gonna grow something pink between their legs I’ve noticed…so sorry but its hard to pay any mind to most peoples bitching when I’ve seen enough of it the last year or so…I pay mind to those that actually are in the tournaments though and help me out certainly…

Other than that mostly it all gets taken for a grain of salt. I’ve heard it all trust me…

“MAXmode ruins 2k2.” “Choi ruins 2k2!” “Angel/May Lee ruin 2k2!” And PLENTY PLENTY more…

“Playing with Kain in Garou is gay.”

If they did that, it wouldn’t be very KOF like. If you want that kind of KOF, then play Fatal Fury. I will agree that XI is a little too insane.

I don’t put 96 - XI under the same umbrella. I group them as 94-95, 96-98 and 2002, 99-2001, 2003-XI.

Well since alot of KOF games are similar in design… don’t you think the community could find a few that everyone would gather around?

You are totally right about the grouping issue…

Also, props to LWK for a really good post that I’m not going to quote because it’s too long. Just to clarify…

I do agree that the top international players have a lot of qualities we should try to attain. My issue is more with their rules.

Anyone with the most basic understanding of statistics & probability can tell you that single-elimination tournaments should be avoided whenever possible; the less play involved in an event, the likelier it becomes that inferior players win. This also illustrates part of why team tournaments are inferior to double-elimination singles for this purpose - it’s easier for 3 random guys to win 3 matches against Japanese players, than for 1 random guy to win 2 matches against a Japanese player.

People sometimes think that these tournament formats are what make the Japanese better than us, when there are so many better answers out there. Same for their ban rules.

So yes, there’s certainly nothing wrong with studying matches of top foreign players, or anything like that. I just take exception to the assumption that everything they do is exactly how we should do it. Particularly given that we’re more of a console/netplay driven scene…

Thanks again,
Josh.

Ralph speaks the truth!

For instance, what’s made the Melty Blood scene more interesting as of late is that netplayers are beginning to show up at major tournaments, and a couple of them have done very well (). We need to help make this happen with the SNK crowd as well, as that’s where the strength lies with a lot of the older games. Final Round could potentially see this happen with RB2…that could be an absolute BEAST of a tournament!

Amen Josh…Brandino DA BEAST :looney: and others…and more people coming out to play etc and supporting the scene thats what its all about…

Like I say people we need more people like Ralph…and Josh…and Keits…and others that have been supporting the cause…

You can talk all day but showing up and supporting speaks louder…

RB2 is shaping up to be an absolute beast of a tournament at Final Round.

Alot of you all dont know what goes on behind the scenes either 2 make this work…But attending these tournaments and showing your support not only goes a long way with me personally but the community as well!!!

Prime example that vid posted up…I have rarely been able to play Melty Blood ***but you SEE ME IN THAT TOURNAMENT THERE PLAYING ***getting beasted on by the guy that won the tournament…

I support the scene even IF I havent been able to touch the game in about a YEAR.

Josh is another prime example…we know he doesnt like Power Instinct Matrimelee II lol :wgrin: but he still entered!!! (AND DID WELL!)

Hes part of the reason PIM2 has more exposure now!!! Everyone knows Angela means serious business now!!!

So hes contributed to the growth of the SNK scene even in a game HE DOESNT LIKE.

you obviously haven’t played too many snk fighters it seems. lets take RB2 for instance. you cant pick the boss (alfred), and thats a good thing. cause he could infinite you from anywhere and basically kill you after hitting 1 hit. ricks infinite is almost impossible during a real match (the perfect distance from the wall) while bobs infinite is pretty easy if you know the timing. thing is you got to have your opponent in the corner or near it for it to even work (unless its against cheng and some other midgets).

just look at MOTW for instance, even the bosses are fair to play with and the game has good as no infinites. (dong hwan and jea hoon could kill you in the corner if you have it on normal handicap, maybe, not even to sure about it).

other snk fighter worth for tournaments and sure as hell better than NGBC. LB1 & 2, RB2, FFS, kof98, SSII. im probably forgetting a few more, but who cares.

p.s. too bad i live in tha dutch, otherwise id like to play some competitive RB2 against someone other than my lil bros.

And finally, to polarity:

I understand where you’re coming from, certainly, but Guilty Gear & Melty are very poor comparisons. Each of those is just a single series of games, consistently upgraded over time. As you’ve seen, I myself often make the mistake of referring to the “SNK community”, but such a phrase really has no more meaning than “the Capcom community”. Both companies have made a large number of fighting games which appeal to different audiences, which is why you have the “3s community” and the “Marvel community” and the “CvS2 community”. SNK is and should be no different.

KOF is a rushdown-heavy series dominated by the hyperhop, Garou is a Capcom-style game with interesting wrinkles, RB2 mixes offensive and defensive play with the ability to shift to the background, WHP is essentially the bridge between ST and Guilty Gear, SS5 Special emphasizes thought over execution more than any other modern fighter, etc.

All deserve to be played in tournaments. Some of them weren’t, just because nobody was willing to step up and run them before Dark Geese came along. That first step is the most important one, and it has encouraged more people to learn these games.

I’m with Keits on this one - yes, XI and NGBC should be run because they’re the most recent games, but the above mentioned titles will likely prove to have more staying power and thus should also be included.
