The Zaku I appeared in one episode of the original 1970s show, had what amounted to a cameo in another season, and is otherwise obscure as all hell.
So the dude spent taxpayer money on a giant robot, picked something maybe ten people in the entire Gundam fandom give a flying damn about (and I’m one of those ten), and then decided to make some changes to the design anyway? I’m not sure what to make of that. Who’s supposed to like this? The general citizenry is going to be rightly pissed at the waste of money, Gundam fans are going to be annoyed he squandered so much potential and didn’t even get the obscure references right, and Bandai… I suspect could probably prove IP infringement here anyway despite the change to the head. If he was trying to avoid a lawsuit, I don’t think that’s going to be enough.

Did anyone say it wasn’t a Zaku? I must have missed that as it seemed to me most people where criticizing him for choosing a silly Zaku when there are way better models to protect your town with.
Yeah, Biolink used the “This is no Zaku boy, no Zaku!” quote earlier in the thread. That said, everyone mocking him for running with a bootleg Zaku I of all things is right. I say this as a fan of the Zaku I: “Seriously what the hell, if you’re going to waste money on a giant robot statue, pick a better one. Get the OG Zaku II at the very least, or pick from the any of hundreds of cooler designs the franchise has to offer. A M1 Astray, a Rick Dias, the Hyaku Shiki, almost anything but a Zaku I. You deserve the lawsuit (more likely to be a lawlsuit) you’re getting for this one, Mayor Dumbass.”
