So reading through this thread I want to just give some input.
Keep the winners pot to the top 3 70/20/10. Bigger payouts will lead to better matches in the long run. People play better and smarter if they know the prize bigger.
At the very most you could award the top 4th and 5th with their entry fees back, but I think that would be unnecessary.
Also, losers brackets I think should stay 2/3 single game as well. I agree with what was said earlier, 3/5 does change the dynamic of the game. Making it 2/3 would keep the consistency, keep complaints low, and also save some time. I’ll play under that rule though, but just a thought.
Quick query about SF:HDR, why aren’t we doing 2/3 rounds best of two sets? The games go by pretty quickly, and the last time the tournament seemed to go pretty smooth. I could be wrong about that though.
Anyways I accept 2/3 rounds of one set, but I was just wondering why the change?

I think you should do something about wireless pads, too. At the last tournament, my friend’s match got messed up because someone else had his controller synced to the 360 and pressed guide. Maybe require them to pull out the battery pack when not in use or something.

I’m not saying an event has to follow every single rule of EVO…and hell…it isn’t my event so do what you want. I’m just saying…top 3 is the norm. Snagging number 1 is what counts. Top 2, you were close but fuck didn’t make it. Top 3, you’re almost there and worth talking about. Top 4, you did good, but you’re not top 3. Top 5, ok now we’re just going over who did better than the rest of the competition. This is coming from someone who has a very difficult time performing when it counts, so I’m not trying to talk shit about people who place in the top 5…20’s…last-place…but we’re kind of lowering the bar mentally. Top 3 doesn’t become the secondary spot to shoot for (secondary, since we all want number 1), it becomes top 5. Then top 8.
I also think the “top 5…top 8…top third are in the money” structure works for poker because, and let’s be honest, poker is an incredibly shitty game (sorry Cannery poker players). The skill is in knowing your odds and fucking with your opponents. You will still get out played by luck and the king of beers. Only people with the hardest of hardcore gambling problems would play in a poker tournament if they only got cash by being luckier than 100+ people that didn’t make top 3. Street Fighter isn’t dependant on luck . All skill man. For real*. No bullshit*. You either out perform*, or you just weren’t good enough*.

Agreed, wireless controllers add in another set of technical annoyances.
I think it might be easier on everyone to enforce a “wired only” rule for SF4.
SF4 hates shifting through wireless syncs, and at worst requires you to actually leave the game to get the syncs right.
Official Wired Xbox controllers aren’t that expensive, Xbox players should invest in one to keep problems to a minimum.
