Desora vs Gief: Now, Desora loses this one(barely) because of some odd mistakes but his approach to the fight is incredibly different from mine and frankly, enlightening for me. Take it for what you will.

Sorry, but Desora is just terrible in this match up. He take waaay too much risk against gief, who have tons of health to take risk.
He is not spacing the fight to his advantage, going waay to close all the time. Sure, it is refreshing, but incredibly risky against someone with so much health.
I’m really surprised he goes close to grief at the end when he have no health. Sure, he is trying to bait out the EX green hand, but it is just un necessary risk. He have tons of space. Why not make gief works it’s way in THEN try bait? Also he pretty much did no mp fb the whole match, really should throw out occasionally to make gief stop and think a bit and perhaps build some meter.
Agreed. He made a lot of mistakes (cross over flip? C’mon) but when he turned it on and seemed focused and was doing damage is what I’m interested in. I specifically like how he focused the lariat…I never do that because I always ate like 60000000 points of damage afterwards but I see how it is a viable option now. I also liked the reset in the corner to ex tatsu. That was a nice set up. Geif reads corner and thinks HOOORAYYY I got him now…oh shit!
I know he sucked in the vid, I just like some of the ideas because the Gief match up is so frigging boring. It’s the same match every time. I’m going to take the good from this and try to incorporate.
@ end of match:
No rh gflip after the mp fb? and jump back fierce instead of jb rh?
jab reset crossup ex tatsu? never.
sometimes we get into a particular frame of mind in certain matches , the gflip vs lariat could have worked out better in 2 instances where he presses kick too late. In the crossup scenario if you flip parry vs lariat you CAN come in at the end of the last hit and squeeze an ultra on landing.
Weve all had matches like this vs gief…
still one of my fave matchups
Agreed
Are you saying that was a bad idea? I liked it.
Hah. I’m sure some people can air parry at the last hit and land ultra but I’d probably screw up the inputs lol. Gief right next to me gives me the heeby jeebies.
@ climax- i think it was fine for him in that match at that instance because it worked, and i know giefs generally are waiting to spd when close, i use ex air tatsu if anything vs gief usually from about2/3 away or more since it moves so fast.
Overall way too risky , ha even for me
Is your new avatar Gouken in his prime? SFV should have Gouken:The Bachelor Edition!
nah thats KAIRI from ex 3 i want him hella badly , but i hear Arika owns the rights to that property , also skullomania and garuda wuold be ill as fuck bring the whole EX cast over shit why not?
meh, i see him as emo akuma.
I skipped the 3rd part of SF unfortunately. I don’t have any good arcades near me and realistically, it was not something I had time for at that point in my life. So I played SF1,SF2,SF2T…SF4. Also some Soul Caliber, Tekken (I hate this game), a decent amount of Mortal Kombat 1 & 2, Virtua Fighter (The drunken guy was awesome!)…
So, not playing SF3 or EX or Alpha series, I feel like I missed an important part of the experience and learning process. I know this has something to do with my dropped links and general “noobness” in certain areas of play, but at least I can say I played the first Street Fighter when it was in the arcades motherblankers!

Alright, let’s revisit the Gief match up.
The good: Dash in sweep is pretty helpful…hell, sweep and if he blocks, sweep again. Dash in grab can be great. F.st.fp and f.st.mk are good to control space, ex tatsu is great for jump ins, wake up flip grab works but I have been hit out of it with a crouching lariat (my bad timing?) and also grabbed out of it with Gief’s U1. He is a huge target so all of your combos will work, unlike some other characters.
The bad: When you get knocked down. Nothing has improved for us in this area. I could be just really bad at execution but if the Gief player is really good and nearly frame perfect, kongo will not stop his crossover knee to command grab. I can’t get it to activate properly. I often end up starting up a palm, which is useless. If the Gief just mixes the knee up with follow up grab or follow up lariat, it could be lights out very quickly. Your options all boil down to a 50/50, with “just blocking” not really applicable. Back dash gets killed, forward dash gets killed…hmm, maybe wake up focus dash? Anybody have any tips for this particular situation.
knee splash to SPD can be prevented if you let yourself get hit by the knee splash. The hitstun on hit makes it so the SPD cant connect. Obviously gets beaten by a late timed spd.
Not too sure about that one. I’ve been playing a decent Gief player lately and he’s hit me with the knee and then grabbed me using the kick command grab. Even so, I think it is a bit bs to have to take damage just to not take more damage. There has to be something I’m missing. The match is nonsense. I kill this guy with damage and keep hitting him but he gets one knock down and then I have to hope that he messes up an input? The answer is to not get knocked down, I guess. Meh.
All command grabs are 2 frames. I don’t know what you want me to tell you. The hitstun/blockstun difference is between getting hit or not is incredibly small. When I say late its pretty much not even a second more.
I’m asking for a more viable option than “let him hit you”.
I think you’ll just have to jump
I often fail to pull off the Kongo too, even when I know Zangief is going for that cross-up knee… o_O
You can’t jump out, the knee hits you. Is there time enough to jump after blocking the cross up? I think lariat kills you.
It does. EX Flip on wake can grab lariat though. Dive kick either gets beat out or trades and you then get slapped by green hand and put right back in the same situation.
You just have to keep him out and bait EX Green hand so you can land some big damage. It’s hard for him to get in without using EX Hulk Hand. So throw fireballs like crazy until he gets within range and then call his bluff. Zangief is the truth if he can get in.
Kongo beats out his cross up bs, but if he empties then Gouken gets snatched. His U2 catches back dashes too.
Lariat gets you then, yeah.
I meant to jump away from the follow-up grab.
Suppose he only has two options; SPD/ that other running grab, and Lariat. Neutral jump will beat the grabs, and blocking will beat the Lariat. You will have to “guess” right, so there’s no gettin’ around that…
