Mastering the Mantis: Yang Combo Thread

go for roll kicks when mid screen, wakeup game is important
i personnaly go for the fallowing:hk roll kicks lk tp tenshin or hk roll kicks lk tp * 2 to whiff a reversal …
go for rekkas to carry u r opponent to the corner better damage

When you say ideal I think of this situation: Gouken has just whiffed an ex.tatsu due to your crouching short after a jump in or something like that, somewhere close to the corner. In this case, you could go for something like;
cl.mk, cl.mk/mp.palm, lk/mk/(hk?).rollkicks
Yang actually has an ideal anti-air punish situation (other than ultra, both U1 and U2 make fairly good anti-airs, albeit a bit different in application). If you punish an opponents jump in attack with an lk.rollkicks and land a counter hit, you can actually follow up with a cr.lk before they hit the ground, causing them to be reset. You can cancel the cr.lk into teleport for a mix-up if you wish. This may be character specific, however of that I am not sure.

I realize these are more outside of the box things, but I was trying not to base it on damage as I find myself winning much more now than when I was focused on that. Just keep chipping away, quickly before they realize they are already dead. Yang is good at that.

wouldnt cl.mk > MP palm do more damage than cl.mk > cl.mk ?

and is that really his “go to” punish in the corner (meterless)
what about his “go to” meterless midscreen punish ? one of the ones I posted ?

To answer your first question, yes, however I like to go for style points every now and again… I mean come on it’s Yang lol.

As for an ideal midscreen punish, the ones you listed are good but as I play more and more I find myself doing different things depending on the character it is I am fighting. Sometimes for a punish I will use cl.hp, mp.palm in order to keep my opponent directly in front of me without knocking them down, while still doing decent damage and stun. For example I may react this way towards a Bison player, as I am not particularly fond of having to deal with him too much on wake-up because he is good at escaping my ambiguous cross-up setups . However, if you hit him with this punish they tend to either crouch, or walk back, or attempt a reversal. If you neutral jump, you are safe from anything he can do to you sans ultra, and I think you may even be safe then. If you j.mk on the way down and they are downbacking, you get a combo. If you put him in block stun, you can continue to maintain safe pressure. You can also divekick if you so choose and change your trajectory to try and catch an errant normal.

Couldn’t you also go for a command grab set-up if you FADC the mp palm? Probably better to save the meter, but if you train the opponent to just hold back…

That sounds like it would be quite a good set-up afterwards, however he was asking for punishes with no meter.

Ah yes. Just figured I’d add to that, since you did seem to answer his question.

This makes me wonder…is there any way to link into his kick target combo (target combo 3)? Probably not, but I’m just curious since target combo 3, dash 2x puts you in your opponent’s face at at least +1 if I recall correctly.

is the target combo you are referring to the lk mk hk target combo that ends in a knockdown ? if so, its easily linked into from st.lp. I just picked up Yang yesterday, forgive me for not knowing each target combo by heart lol

also. are there any real uses for his command dash in any application outside of resets ? and I heard theyre invincible…could someone expand on that please ?

That’s the one. They are not invincible on start-up, however they become invincible… not sure exactly on which frame. they can be used for set-ups, such as after a forward throw. If you watch some high level Yang you can also see the application in wakeup mix-up game. Ex can also be used to escape a bad corner/vortex situation, however be careful as you can be thrown out of it.

thank you sir

watch 666’s yang , he’s one of the most incredible users of teleport , u can start from his setups like mk roll kick dash tp to bait reversals…
if they start waiting for you then just command grab after dash (beats lights, grab 80% of the time cause it’s meaty)
and one more thing, just stick with the character never give up , don’t listen to those fei long cammy cody whores…yang is technical and have fair matchups against most of the cast,he can handle it…
i’m glad to see kyoku using these gimmicks , the one that i use is forward throw dash tp tp ,good and easy one

Hey there! I’m new here and have been training a bit with Yang.

I have been trying to find a good finisher for a corner combo. Jump in -> s.Hp->Mantis x2 -> lvl 2 Focus attack - crumble -> ex palm…xx

I have tried the Mp palm -> mp senkyuutai and I haven’t been able to connect it. Any ideas? I’ve been searching but I haven’t found this anywhere.

Optimally try to finish Rekka FADC with cl. MK, MP Palm, MK Rollkicks if you don’t want to spend meter.

If you want to spend meter, then do cl. MK, HP Palm, EX Rollkicks.

These are the combos that end in a knockdown. Now if you want to go for a reset afterwards then cl. MK, HP Palm and then either far HP (same damage as the MK rollkick combo above), cr. LK or far MP.

If you’re doing a combo after stun then the best is lvl 3 Focus, backdash, EX Palm, MP palm, far HP. It does over 400 damage and ends in a reset and only costs one bar.

Alright! seems like very damaging combos! got to go to the training room. Thanks for the reply. =)

Would there be any good or stylish way to end my combo suggestion as you do the focus attack instead of FADC to enable the ex-palm in the combo though?

Well you could always do lvl 2 focus, EX Palm, cl. MK, HK rollkicks. I’d say it’s one of the more practical ones since it does 321 damage IIRC. There’s silly options you can do with EX Slashes though. Of course the optimal would be to just do EX Palm, MP Palm, st. HP but I don’t think the st. HP is close enough to hit against any characters. Maybe you could hit them with EX Slashes, especially if you do kara slashes.

alright! thanks for the answers mate!

Hi guys, I’m trying to make a statistic regarding combos (all characters) and I need a little help. I need 2 combos per character:

  • Best BnB combo
  • Best punish combo
You can use max 3 bars, but it must work midscreen, on at least half the cast, at least standing, and it should be practical. No jump in/counterhit/Ultra/Super. Thank you

Yeah, that’s a nice corner setup. The cr.lk to lk teleport corner reset is character specific. Yang can sometimes go behind the opponent into the corner after the teleport. Also, the cr.lk whiffs on certain characters. I know it’s really easy to land on Ibuki.

cr.lk is universal, you just have to take a small step forward.

Is f.hp universal though? I have trouble landing it in a myriad of characters.
