Marvel's Netflix Universe: Return of the Kingpin

It’s about a man who doesn’t want to be called a nigga.

Doctor Doom is a cheap ass! 200 bucks! Bwahahahaa!

Not suspicious at all driving a big ass armored vehicle in harlem

imagine post 9/11 ny. i thought it was odd at first…but then thinking about all weird superhero/villain shit…it wouldnt surprise me.

You know, after gestating on this for a bit, I realized something.

I don’t really like this interpretation of Luke Cage.

This nigga is too much of a fucking boy scout compared to the original.

Even his backstory got neutered to make him more of a perfect flawless messiah. Dude was supposed to be thugging it out in Harlem in his youth. Yeah he does get falsely framed and convicted, but he still had dirty hands regardless. His heroics had a redemptive subtext to them, he turned over a new leaf and truly became the savior of his home. He was also street and sounded like it. This Luke is disciplined ex-mility and ex-cop who was the son of a overbearing preacher, meaning he’s leaking moral purity. Worst he did was get roped into take a car for a joy ride with his best friend.

Michael Coulter sounded awkward as hell every time he even tried to sound a tiny bit street, dude couldn’t even muster up some thing as small as a “y’all” when it came to slang. That entire interaction with Method Man was cringey, as was his breakdown with that kid that put a gun to his head early on, i’ve never heard a black person(in all of my years of being a black person around black people of all types) in my life say “nigga” so unnaturally. Dude was like the whitest black guy ever, felt like the man was never around other black people before in his entire life.

And it isn’t even a matter of “proper speaking”, because Pop and Mariah are examples of speaking properly while still sounding like an actual black person(outside of Mariah’s breakdowns and sass). We don’t all have to sound like that, but it’s fucking Luke Cage dude, he needs to sound right.

Even more jarring since the kid version of him in the flashbacks didn’t sound half as corny and out of place.

Actually speaking of Pop, he’s pretty much the way Luke is supposed to be, a dude who was doing wrong, got sent away, and came back to turn over a new leaf and help his community with whatever means he could. Not some stranger who gets roped into the problems of a city he barely knows. Dude is all elegant and well learned, holier than thou, and out of place.

It removes any of the complexity they could have had from his original origin and style, what we got is just a black Captain America personality and story-wise, only Cap somehow manages to have a bit more complexity even.

Nothing about this dude felt relatable in the slightest.

He was basically a small scale Superman, complete with his own jealous and obsessive arch-nemesis with a supply of “kryptonite”.

This is gonna neuter the dynamic between him in Iron Fist too, won’t have the fun of a rich white guy who grew up around Chinese(kind of) kicking it with a street smart black dude in New York.

I also hate how passive the dude was with all of the fights. I mean the whole nonchalant knockouts and slow walking into gunfire thing is good enough the first few times, but after a while it gets tired and boring. Cage doesn’t usually have to try in most of his fights, but he does anyway, so I don’t see why they refused to make him put in a little work. The only running he did in this season was away. Even in the Crispus Attucks raid dude was nonchalant.

Every fight scene outside of the prison felt like I was watching a bunch of idiots run into a fist over and over again.

/rant

…a dude with super strength and untouchable skin…and you mad hes mad chill about fighting?

I’m mad because Luke in the comics isn’t always chill about fighting and its boring as hell to watch.

its an interpretation that takes place in the real world. Hes not a killer so he doesnt need to go ham. this nigga pimp smacks people to sleep…why would he be more hyped about it when you know you can barely be touched. I will agree on the rock em sock em robots aspect but honestly…thats how most real fights are. especially from dudes who grew up in the hood. I used to laugh at 80s movies that did that shit thinkin how unrealistic it is…but then i watched fight vids from the hood. its sad just how bad real fights are.

Diamondback was Deebo. I was just waiting for John Witherspoon to make a cameo somewhere.

luke avoid fights and doesnt swear. lol if this series is too non chalant then the new current heros for hire is a babysitter.

I think you’re overthinking what I mean. I mean instead of walking slowing and waiting to get next someone and throwing them in the air like he did, he could have, say, ran at them and threw them into the air, jumped to the next guy, smacked him upside the head to KO, etc.

Didn’t need to be him fucking walking into every fight.

lol i love sanfords art. it honestly doesnt even need color

You mean a 400lb+ man with the leg strength to jump superhumanly high? And no not like daredevil. Like someone who is on the ground floor getting shot at by people on the overhang of a club(Harlem’s paradise). Instead of say, walking up the stairs slowly.

Do I think he should be rushing every fight? No.

Do I think he should be doing more than strolling every fight? Yes.

So you’re going to act like the Luke in this show isn’t supposed to be early Luke?

You’re just gonna start pretending now?

Now, I’m not saying they need to make shit 1-to-1, but they didn’t even try.

I didn’t say anything about avoiding fights. It’s about how he handles the fights he’s in.

But he’s still not even like modern Luke.

His origin is still too pure, his way of talking is still lacking in any form of “streetness”, and he’s not even from Harlem. He doesn’t even put any effort into any of his fights. It’s not about if he has to or not. His attitude isn’t even really the same.

They took too much away from him. I can’t think of any other MCU character that has been gutted this hard.

Netflix version of Jessica Jones only has super strength. She has flight and low level durability in the books. Things that the show took from her.

I’ll admit, I kinda like the trash talking, money chasing Luke Cage, but I don’t have a problem with the Netflix depiction either.

I would like to see him shake down a supervillain for a petty $100 tho. Lol

Ya’ll dudes is dumb as hell. Stop letting the 90’s comic scene make you look stupid.

Hawkeye?

That’s exactly my thinking on this too. When you’re a big strong guy why would you be so aggressive and unnecessarily violent…like exactly what would you have to prove when you and everyone knows you can fuck shit up anytime you want.

Also I like this interpretation of Luke cage. Look as much as I always appreciate the source material I love the idea that Luke isn’t a stereotype and instead he’s well spoken, well read and has solid moral values. I hate to feed into any social justice narrative or use media to send a message but honestly I’ve known people who grew up in rough and reduced circumstances and I would have loved to show them a show like this and have luke be an example to them.
