Marvel Comics Thread

us war machine max was good…

I just read the first four volumes of Secret Warriors (up to issue 19). It’s… inconsistently good. I like how Hickman (and Bendis) set things up in the first volume, but the other books were a bit scattered on an issue-by-issue basis. It wasn’t very smooth how Hickman tried to integrate the series with the rest of the Marvel universe events, especially Siege. (Which I still haven’t read.) The art’s inconsistent, too. I grew to enjoy Stefano Caselli’s work while reading Joe Casey’s run on G.I. Joe, and he’s pretty good in Secret Warriors, but he doesn’t draw it all. The other artists just aren’t as good and it hurts the overall run.

Good, fun series but it really doesn’t live up to all the Internet hype it’s been getting. On the plus side, Hickman has an ending planned out so hopefully closure will make the story even stronger. On the other hand, the last few issues I read kinda gave me the impression that he’s being rushed to finish his storyline before the series ignominiously gets canceled.

have yet to pick up any Hickman books for fear of them releasing OHC’s or omniboo in the future. That’s my beef with a lot of marvel books now - I don’t know what format they are planning. I would like to be reading the following titles: Ult Comics Spider-Man, Hickman FF, Secret Warriors, Secret Avengers…but I’m waiting to see how they are traded first. The only other Marvel stuff I’m reading is X-Factor and and X-Men Legacy, although I’m pretty behind trade-wise on both. I’ll also pick up the occasional X-crossover OHC. I have Second Coming on my shelf but haven’t read it yet, but I skipped stuff like X-Infernus.

I just ordered the Franken-Castle OHC because it seems like good fun. Maybe I will go back and pick up the trades to the earlier Remender issues of that series.

Yeah, I gotta say that the Secret Warriors Premiere HCs I got could have been better in terms of collection efficiency. Books 1 and 3 both collect 6 issues, but book 4 is a pitiful 3 issues plus a stupid Siege crossover tie-in issue. AND it still has a 20 buck retail price. I don’t know who the hell would pay 20 bucks for a four-issue hardback. That’s just not worth it. I’d rather not read it at all at that point.

However, the Secret Warriors trade dress and design is very well done. Even the way the insides are laid out are better than the typical TRADE, BABY.

Obviously you would pay for it, instead of like checking beforehand. Oh snapz Zephy!

Also we should do comic trading at some point, I actually have a collection now I could send you lol. Also I cannot find anymore of those X-Men B&W trades, every time I do it’s like volume 8.

Hurm… I am looking to liquidate my Jeph Loeb collection…

Poor Loeb, what work you got? Only thing I can think of that I own is Long Halloween, Dark Tomorrow or whatever, Hulk #1 and a few issues of Ultimates vol.3.

Other than that I have a bunch of DC stuff and some Marvel. I have a shit ton of trades/hardcovers though.

Zephy Newsarama.com : Wolverine, Deadpool Among Marvel and Milligan’s 5 RONIN

@darksoul - Yup. I’m gonna get that Milligan series. Good artists lined up for those issues, too. The only question is… Do I wait for the TRADE, BABY, or go to the store every week and buy the issue right then and there?

@Ayo - To my great shame, I am the owner of The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, and Spider-Man: Blue (OHC). I have a small stack of comics I wouldn’t mind selling/trading. I think I posted some in the TPB Thread a while back. I’ll update the list in anyone’s interested in my sloppy seconds.

Invaders Now #4 was a lot of fun. There were a lot of obscure references to almost all of Shuma-Gorath’s past stories, even the last one in Marvel Knights 4. Then there was the main story about sacrificing the lives of the heroes for sins they comitted during WWII and Nazis too. Good times! They are not done with Shuma just yet so he’ll be back in January heh!

New Avengers was cool too. A lot of talking heads though. Good dialog still.

I’m wondering how in the hell are they possibly going to get rid of Shuma Gorath. In the past he’s been portrayed as a serious force in the Marvel Universe. Voodoo is dead so there is no current Sorceror Supreme. Strange is, well, strange. Zola blew that deformed dude away so I have no idea how this will be resolved.

But, you know, comics and all that. It’s a good story and I hope Invaders Now continues. I like every member of the cast too. Spitfire is really hot. Nothing like an 80 year old woman in a teenage girls body, hubba hubba.

Also, it’s a good time to mention that Steve’s new costume is fucking awesome. People rarely if ever praise it. I’ve yet to see an artist fuck it up. It always looks great somehow.

Captain America will most likely falcon punch him to death. But yeah I don’t see how Shuma will be brought down, scary indeed.

Invadewrs has just reminded me, that we’ll probably never see the Twelve finished :(. One more thing to add tothe JMS sucks pile.

Yeah Twelve will probably never get finished. JMS isn’t doing Marvel work and current Marvel doesn’t like to hand off books to other writers.

Me happy

Man comics are so freaking overwhelmingq so many freaking story lines for major characters wolverine alone ins in like 20 diff books right now ugh…anyways /rant

Theres no one there that can best Shuma even if he’s out side his realm, Strange is questionable, I mean strange never beat Shuma in a head up fight.

They should recruit Mango Sentinel then they might stand a chance imo.

I surprisingly enough enjoyed the hell out of New Avengers #7. Even with the lack of action and nothing but dialog it was entertaining. Jessica telling Cage the hell off about not accepting a paycheck was awesome. And the nanny interviews made me laugh, though I would have definitely given Deadpool the job. Ending up with Squirrel Girl was unexpected and seems like it’s going to lead to some interesting places in the story. I’ve always loved the absurdness of her as a character.

Jon Favreau Will Not Direct Iron Man 3 – Vulture

This is not a good sign IMO…

ASM #650, X-Force, Wolverine and Loki were all pretty dope this week!

Loki, minor spoiler
