The Sentry, Gladiator and Hyperion = The Supermen of the Marvel Universe. It’s been openly talked about Quesada.
^That’s kinda BS…for starters Sentry is more like a crappy Miracleman/Marvelman, dunno bout Gladiator, but which Hyperion are you talking about? The Supreme Power or classic Squadron Supreme one?
:wgrin: Your affection flatters me, and I actually recall the series I first read;
Civil War, Ironman Extremis, Planet Hulk, Frank M.'s RoboCop & Watchmen.
Yes one of my first comic experiences is Watchmen, I didn’t like it MUCH the first time I read it, but after rereading it a few more times I LOVED IT.
Ah I see what you mean, I think I’ll try to track down Bru’s older works and give them a read, I did like his ‘The Fall’ oneshot.
I think I will get back into Sleeper I’ve done this with various comic series over the years.
Speaking of DKR, I did read it a few weeks ago, but I guess I would’ve appreciated it more if I had been exposed to it earlier or was among the 80s fad for it.
Abnett and Lanning & Kyle and Yost are amazing and should be on a Tier that they share with Johns and other great writers!
…but I get what you mean >o>
I’ve actually considered this long before reading comics, and someone at another forum managed to word it out in an understandable way which is similar to how I found Cap being Supes equivalent; its that Superman and Steve are the role models and try to be ‘perfect’ in what they do, and aim to inspire others.
Just finished CCCCCCCRRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIMMMMMMMMMMNIINNNNAAAALLLLL!!! latest arc "BAD NIGHT: WOW WOW FUCKING WOW im all set and hyped up for Incognito and after that Criminal next arc is a Tracy Lawless arc
Sentry has the power of… well, I’m sure you’ve read it a thousand times, but he’s still nuts, that’s why psychics own him. Gladiator’s power says “he can’t lose unless he believes he can”, which is why psychics own him. And either Hyperion. We’ll shoot for the 616 Hyperion, just to keep things uniform.
The only thing that makes them the same are the values they were designed on in a time where the “American Way” was what we wanted our kids reading and believing. AS time passed, Cap and Supes were less and less what they were. The world started to get to them. When was the last time you read Superman say “Truth, Justice and the American Way”? Superman’s character (who he is and what he means) is more easily compared to… Spiderman. Sure, Spiderman didn’t grow up on a farm, or have a rock that makes him die because he was born on a far away world but they both always tried to do the right thing, no matter what. They both have their women issues. They both work for a newspaper in some respect. Spidermans life just sucks a little more and thats probably the way Stan Lee wanted it. A superhero with REAL problems. Lots of people hated Spidey. Only Lex Luthor and other villains seemed to hate Superman.
So, just because they wear red, white and blue doesn’t mean you can compare them to one another.
Hawkeye / Mockingbird mini. Not only will they explain how Mockingbird came back to life but it is even going to explain her appearances in Hell over the years, whoa…
I don’t think Marvel has a Superman-equivalent. They have plenty of guys who have powers that are just like Superman’s powers, but that’s not the same. They don’t mean anything. If goody ever bothered to read this thread, I think he would back me up on this.
I think the biggest way Captain America and Superman are similar to each other is that each is the moral center of their respective universes. This is an arguable point, and it would utterly ramp up the level of pretentiousness (after, like, 93 pages of anti-pretentiousness!) in the Marvel Comics Thread if we were to debate it.
Marvel’s version of Superman -

Special thanks to Rabidrage for pointing that out in the Spider-Man thread. Sorry, could not resist.
Pssft, Flash is the moral center of the DC universe.
Everyone wants to be like Barry Allen. The all american superhero.
Pretty sure Batman and Wolverine are the moral centers of their respective universes.
does not compute
Because they’re the best at what they do, and what they do ain’t pretty.
SNIKT SNIKT
Clinty just wants a Canadian to be the hero every single time. He probably still looks back on the War of 1812 as vindication for his country’s entire reason of existence.
We burned your White House down, suck on that.
I always thought Captain America was always the “Superman” of Marvel, just much more interesting.
Hyperion is based off Superman, but its his characterization that is different.
Cap and Supes? If so, that’s what I’ve meant since I wrote it.
…but Cap and Supes still seem to be morals and inspiration to other people.
They are the same in that they are the moral inspiration in their respective universes.
That’s what I’ve been mentioning since my post about Supes and Cap (Steve) being the same.
I still don’t think they are the same, though. Only similar, and to a certain degree, and even that is debatable depending on the era and how the characters have been treated over the years.
I don’t think it’s fair to deny Superman’s significance as a one-of-a-kind character. Don’t get me wrong. Cap is also one of the most notable superhero characters, but he’s important in a different way than Superman. Superman kind of represents the best of us, as in humanity. Y’know… “Doomed planet. Desperate scientists. Last hope. Kindly couple.” and all that. Cap’s more representative of the best of America - exactly the sort of character that could inspire Carpet Lint and his kind to regret burning down the White House.
Also, Superman’s clearly the more famous and well-known stalwart of his company. His comics have always been a cornerstone of DC’s sales. Can’t say the same about Cap. Marvel’s been relying on Spider-Man and the X-Books for the past few decades.
Only in power levels, and that’s not the point he was trying to make.
The ending to the recent Captain Britain issue was quite disappointing
Mary Jane hanging with Millie The Model, remember her LOL!
Anyone even been reading Secret Invasion? I stopped reading due to… well, I lost interest. I was hoping Bendis hadn’t spent years “planning” this just to disappoint us all but so far I really am not that interested. I keep expecting the Scarlet Witch to come back and say “no more skrulls”.
Nove is the most interesting read, as far as I’m concerned so far.
